Fourteen
He was leaning over his porcelain white toilet, throwing up the uncomfortable dinner of steak and vegetables, uncomfortable in the sense that he could not think about eating with the impending events.
The exhausted young man, only functioning on maybe 2 hours of sleep, half of which he had gotten in the palace library after Anabella had left him alone, fell back against the wall.
"Seonghwa?", Anabella's voice echoed through the throbbing in his head.
He leaped on his feet and opened the door to find Anabella standing in the middle of the room, staring at him with a furrowed brow.
She was wearing a beautiful, red-orange dress with long, lace sleeves. And, at the end of the sleeves, were small, red gloves made of silk. Her long, wavy hair fell around her shoulders as she walked over to him, "Is something wrong?"
"No, I'm just about to be handed an entire kingdom, but I'm perfect.", Seonghwa forced a small smile, one formed with trembling lips, on his face.
"You'll be fine. And, the kingdom will only be yours for a few minutes.", Anabella stared at him with excitement swirling through her eyes as she bounced on her feet.
As Seonghwa walked out of the bathroom, Anabella reached towards him, "May I?"
Seonghwa nodded and took another step closer, one that almost caused him to step on her gown. "Here.", the silk of her glove brushed against his cheek, a bright pink at the moment, as she fixed the strands of hair that had fallen out of place.
His heart hammered against his poor chest, surely to be ripped apart by the time all the stress was over, as she smiled, "You have soft hair."
Seonghwa nodded, not knowing any other way to respond.
Anabella giggled, a sound as merry as sleigh bells, as she pulled back, "There you go."
"Thank you, Anabella.", he responded, her name remaining on his lips like an unfamiliar taste he almost had his grip on.
"Shall we go?", Anabella offered Seonghwa her arm only to be neglected and offered one herself.
"Yes, of course.", Seonghwa took a deep breath and led the princess out of the room.
"You'll be fine, I promise. And-", Anabella patted Seonghwa's hand, "-I'll be with you the whole time, cheering you on."
That small comment left an idiotic smile on Seonghwa's face.
Anabella led the way through the eerily silent halls, the bright lights only making Seonghwa more nervous.
And, as they reached the heavy, brown doors of the throne room, Anabella's hand slid down to grab his. Seonghwa turned to look at her, his pretty, pink lips parting in shock.
"Are you ready?", Anabella turned to look at him, causing him to slam his mouth close.
"As I'll ever be."
A small smile appeared on her lips as she squeezed Seonghwa's hand.
The guard, the small, golden accents of his uniform shining bright in the light coming into the palace from outside, by the door turned to open it.
As Seonghwa's eyes trailed through the large crowds of journalists in the room, he leaned towards Anabella, "Are you not to cover your face?"
She shook her head, "Should Sonar's people not know what their queen looks like?"
Their eyes met and Seonghwa gave her a quick smile before they walked inside.
Strangely enough, he found comfort in watching Anabella walk down the walkway with her head held up high even as everyone around them stared at her in silent shock.
Mr. Conrad held out his hand and helped Anabella on the throne room's stage as Seonghwa pulled himself on it. "Welcome, Princess Anabella and our future king, Park Seonghwa!", San announced from the side of the stage, his eyes sending a message of alarm and confusion.
Cheers erupted from half the crowd while the other half stared at them in confusion before turning to write on the scrolls before them.
Seonghwa watched Anabella sit on one of the golden thrones with red, velvet cushions before sitting on the throne beside her.
"If everyone is situated, I believe it is time to coronate our new king.", San glanced at them before looking up at Mr. Conrad who nodded, the cue to let San know he was to go forward with the ceremony.
He put down his megaphone and picked up the crown, the one that had sat on King Fabian's all those years ago, with its golden arches and red-orange jewels.
Mr. Conrad and San walked beside Seonghwa.
"Park Seonghwa, stand.", Mr. Conrad ordered.
Seonghwa did as told, his ankle slamming into the throne's leg, but he kept his pain subsided behind an uncomfortable smile.
"Do you promise to run our kingdom of Sonar with mercy and patience?", Mr. Conrad began.
Seonghwa looked at Anabella fromt he corner of his eye. She was squirming around in her seat, a smile painted on her lips, glistening with red lip makeup.
"I do."
"On the contrary, do you vow to lead Sonar with an iron fist in the case that is needed?", Mr. Conrad continued.
"I do."
"Do you vow to risk your life to protect the citizens of Sonar's wellbeing?"
Seonghwa nodded, "Yes, sir."
Mr. Conrad turned to San and took the crown from him.
"If you vow to all those things, I am glad to call you, on behalf of all at Sonar's citizens-", Mr. Conrad put the crown over Seonghwa's soft strands, "-our new king!"
Cheers erupted as Mr. Conrad and San pulled away from him.
"I actually believe this-", Seonghwa took off the crowd and stared at it, "-belongs to someone else."
The room became so quite that you could hear a pin drop as Seonghwa approached Anabella.
She looked up at him with such happiness that Seonghwa couldn't help but smile. And, the world seemed to melt away until Mr. Conrad interjected, "What do you think you are doing?"
Anabella stood and placed a protective hand over her crown, "Taking back what is mine."
She turned to the crowd, "This kingdom will learn to respect me as their queen."
"An-", San began.
She turned to him, "Do you really want to begin this?"
San shook his head and took a step back.
"You are a disgrace to your parents, Anabella.", Mr. Conrad said.
"My parents would be proud of me. And-", her eyes hardened, "-don't you dare use my parents' name in your foolish defense."
Seonghwa's heart skipped a beat as he stared at her. His eyes trailed to her hand and he could have sworn that there were sparks falling upon her hand.
Yunho ran onto the stage and grabbed her hands, "Ok, that is enough."
"No, Sonar is going to listen to their queen.", Anabella pulled away from Yunho and stpped forward to address the journalists once more.
"Write this down. I love the people of Sonar, but they will respect me or else."
"And-", Anabella turned to her father's advisors, "-you are fired."
With that, Seonghwa watched Anabella turned and walk out of the room.
