XXIX

Althea gave Zubeen a thorough check-up at his home. Thanks to her medical knowledge and skills, he felt much better. However, even despite this knowledge, Deron still watched over him, falling asleep on the edge of the bed where the other was lying.

The Oracle quietly looked inside and fixed her eyes on the snoozing Deron. She rested her hand on the door frame and looked at him intently.

"He doesn't like you anyway. It'll be worse when he catches you." Folke said, appearing out of nowhere and sitting on her friend's shoulder.

However, the sorceress didn't answer, but continued to look at him carefully, which didn't escape the attention of her little companion. The dragon gently nudged her cheek with its tail.

"I don't mind." She replied after this gesture.

"What are you thinking about?" Folke asked curiously.

"I.. have been observing many people for many years..." She said thoughtfully. "I know their fate, and even though it's bad..."

"You can't change it." Folke interjected firmly. "You cannot do anything."

"I couldn't do anything about my own fate, let alone the fate of others." She sighed heavily and closed her eyes for a moment. "It's the least I can do..."

Deron, deep in sleep, didn't notice her presence. Even though he felt anxious, he couldn't wake up when he suddenly saw a person he didn't expect in his dream.

"We meet again, Deron." The little girl said with a smile on her face. She was dressed the same as last time, and the same scarf covered her horns again. She stood in front of a confused Deron and smiled warmly at him.

"Why are you here?" He asked with uncertainty.

"You heard her voice." She replied as if reading his thoughts. "Alvora."

At the sound of his mother's name, he clenched his fists and took a confident step closer to the girl. He tried to look at her sternly, but he knew she didn't do anything to him. She smiled warmly at him and waited for him to say something to her.

"It's just a dream..." He shook his head sadly. "Not reality."

Minette laughed charmingly, then jumped and hopped three meters away from him, then stopped again and looked at him with a smile.

"Sometimes a dream can be a reality." She said. "And sometimes reality can be a dream." She added, and her voice seemed to become more and more distant, echoing in his head.

"Deron." He heard and suddenly froze at the sound of that voice. He slowly and very hesitantly turned around, feeling that he was once again short of words, or even of breath. "Deron..."

"How...?" He shook his head in disbelief. "But it's..." He turned back to the girl who had disappeared.

"I thought I wouldn't see you again." Alvora said in a warm voice.

The man looked at her and still couldn't believe it. He felt his voice stuck in his throat and he was fighting with himself. Was he hesitant about what to say or do? He didn't know.

He blamed himself, knowing that he wasn't there when she died and no matter how he tried, he couldn't get rid of those thoughts. He couldn't hold his grudge against her when, even though it was a short time, he managed to get to know his mother more than he had known her since childhood. This little fact made him very happy, even though he couldn't show it, or maybe he didn't even want to show it. He wanted to be tough and put family matters aside when a much more important task awaited him.

"I'm sorry..." He said after a long time, which surprised his mother. "I'm sorry..." He repeated, lowering his head and clenching his fists even more.

"I forgive you." She replied, chuckling charmingly, which caught his attention. "Now tell me, Deron..." She walked up to him and gently took his hands. "Will you ever be able to forgive me...?"

Deron looked into her eyes. Even though she was smiling so happily at him, there were tears in the corners of her eyes that she always hid. Her touch was gentle and hesitant, as if she was unsure whether she had the right to touch him at all.

"I will..." He replied, looking at her carefully.

Hearing his words, Alovra smiled even wider, feeling the weight completely lift from her heart. She had a great desire to take her son in her arms and hug him tightly, but she felt she shouldn't. She felt that Deron might feel awkward because of her, so she hesitantly raised her hand and gently touched his cheek, feeling herself start to cry again.

"Thank you... my son."

After a moment, she stepped back, looking at him again. She knew that they would be separated for a long time again, but this time it didn't bother her. She wanted Deron to live as long as possible, to live his life to the fullest with a person who was truly worthy of his love.

The woman slowly turned to him and started walking away.

Deron, seeing this, ran a short distance behind her, then stopped as suddenly as if his shoes were stuck in glue. However, it dawned on him that it wasn't glue and he was terribly hesitant. When he looked at Alvora again, her stature began to slowly fade from his sight.

"Mother!" He shouted loudly.

Alvora stopped suddenly and slowly turned around to look at her son.

"I... I forgive you." He said in a confident voice.

Hearing this, Alvora felt a pang in her heart for a moment. She thought she had misheard, and when Deron's words sunk in, she could do nothing but smile warmly at him again. She responded with nothing more than a cheerful smile, then turned and disappeared, leaving the falling leaves of the flame lily in her wake.

Deron was breathing heavily, looking at it all in disbelief. He felt the presence of his little companion, even though she didn't appear to him again, he felt that she was standing right next to him.

"Minette..." He said after a while. "Thank you."

"Deron?"

Zubeen grabbed his hand and he immediately raised his head and looked at him confused.

"My dear Deron..." He stroked his hand, seeing his partner's reaction. "Are you alright?"

Deron looked at him, blinking rapidly and clearing away unnecessary thoughts.

"I'm fine." He replied, joining their hands together. "Don't worry."

"You're such a sly foxie, huh." Folke whispered with a smile, still sitting on the shoulder of the Sorceress, who hid behind the wall of the room, carefully eavesdropping on them. The Oracle didn't say anything, just laughed softly and slowly moved away from the room.

She headed toward the exit, then stopped among the flowers on Zubeen's property, looking up at the Mother Tree. She stared at them sadly when suddenly someone else caught her attention.

"You knew about Najy, didn't you?" She heard Althea's voice behind her so she looked towards her. "You knew he was going to die...didn't you?"

The Sorceress looked at her in silence. Her eyes seemed to be sunken, apparently she couldn't sleep again because of the nightmares. Now her bright irises were staring at her stubbornly, looking for an answer to a question she already knew. It was as if she wanted to hear something different, but despite everything, the Sorceress didn't want to lie to her. The truth can be painful, but it is the only right choice.

"Yes. I knew." She replied after some time, stroking Folke.

Althea continued to stare at her, feeling as if just looking at the Sorceress was hurting her from the inside. She clenched her hands and made a straight line out of her mouth, trying to control all the emotions bubbling inside her.

"Why...?"

Those were the only words she could say. No matter how hard she tried not to cry, just the thought of her brother brought tears to her eyes.

"Why...?" She sobbed, fell to her knees, hiding her face in her hands. "If you knew about everything, why...? Why, why?!" She looked at her, and her entire face was flooded with tears. "We could've prevented it, right?! We... could've done something..."

She looked at her shaking hands.

"If you had only said one word Najy, you wouldn't..." Crying made it difficult for her to say the next words, but despite this she didn't give up, wanting to say everything that was tormenting her. "I trusted you!" She screamed, which surprised the Oracles even more. "I believed that you would help us... that you would warn us if something bad were to happen... Why you...?" She stopped, hiding her face in her hands again.

The Sorceress stared at her, still unable to believe what she had just heard.

"I trusted you"

They were three such simple words, but to her they meant much more. No one outside of her sisters ever trusted her or appreciated her. She doubted her older sister's words when she promised her that one day there would definitely be someone else who would trust her and appreciate her as she was.

Hearing these words from Althea's mouth, she felt something break inside her. She had never felt like this, so where did it suddenly come from? Why does she care so much about these people? It's because of the Mother Tree, right? Because she wants to save the goddess herself. There was no other reason for this...was it not?

Folke glanced at her human companion and, seeing her distress, felt a tinge of joy despite everything. She wasn't happy about the Sorceress's sadness, but because her friend began to see something more in people. It was the progress she and sisters had always hoped for. Now, after so many long years, something finally began to change.

The Oracle slowly approached Atlhea, crouching down in front of her. She was still crying loudly, and the Sorceress didn't know what she should do in this situation. Then she slowly and tentatively touched the Healer's hand, gaining her attention.

"My dear Althea..." She said, looking into her tearful eyes. "I'm afraid that..."

She hesitated, not knowing how to choose her words. She wasn't good at comforting others, she always stepped aside. Her sisters could do anything. Comfort, make you smile, support. She felt that there was nothing extraordinary about her as they always said. So why did they believe in it so much? Why... did they trust her?

"I couldn't do anything." She said after a long moment. "You won't believe me, but... I wanted to. I couldn't... but I wanted to."

Althea, hearing her words, grabbed both of her hands, and this sudden gesture surprised the Sorceress even more.

"Why..?"

The Oracle sighed softly. Unlike the earlier conversation with the crowd, she didn't feel so irritated and indifferent towards Althea.

"I already told you, don't you remember...?" She said sadly, looking at her. "When you mess with the cycle of life, you mess with powers you've never dreamed of."

"I don't care if it would save my brother!"

"If it were to give him back his life, there would also have to be a payment. To return the life of one, you must take it from another, Althea. I know you would sacrifice yourself for Najy... but look at it from the other side. If this made sense to happen, how do you think Najy would feel then, hm? Do you think he would be happy knowing that his sister gave up her life for him, hm? And would you be happy if you died there and little Najy would give his life for you if only you would come back?"

The Healer was speechless at her words. She knew the Oracle was right, but she didn't want to and couldn't admit it. When she lost Najy, she felt that she had lost a part of herself and that she would never get that lost part back, just as the Oracle had said before.

"This power... this fate, this destiny... is not to be messed with, Althea." She said gently. "I know it hurts... but it's safer for both parties. You did a brave thing by volunteering for this quest." She said, gently lifting her chin to look at her. "But think about it again. Remember, you still have Swaran and he loves you more than anything."

"I know that..."

"So why don't you share his opinion?"

"Because..." She took a deep breath. "- I can not. I can't function normally because of this, and such a adventure has always been Najy's big dream... I know that it won't change anything, and even when I come back... if I come back..." She hesitated. "Nothing I do will bring my brother back, but... Najy has always done so much for me, and I have never been able to repay him. I know this adventure is something he really wanted. That's why... I want to do it both for him and for myself. I feel... I have to do this." She looked expectantly at the Sorceress who was listening to her words.

The Oracle nodded, smiling faintly.

"So you should rest.."She helped her up and looked at her again. "Get some sleep." She said. "This night and no other, you won't have nightmares anymore." She assured her.
