CHAPTER 61: THE DIVINE BLAZE

Luke looked like a pyrotechnics stunt gone wrong.

He was falling from the sky with his hands lit ablaze as if he was an object entering through Earth's atmosphere.

Suddenly he felt something clash into him and stop him in mid-air.

"Got ya," he heard Alpha's voice and saw his cosmic dust eyes. His copper wings spread and lowered Luke down. Luke turned off the display of blood-red flames as Alpha got a grip on him.

Luke wanted to kiss Alpha for catching him, but he'd probably get arrested for that since he was about to turn 19.

"These demons are a shit," Alpha complained like a normal 15-year-old lacking proper grammar. "They possess faster than we can expel."

The manual had an answer for that. The Divine Blaze was more accurate than a laser missile shot from the submarine of the world's most powerful navy.

But first he had to subdue Jurgen. "Hold them off as long as you can. I'll help finish it once I stop Jurgen."

Alpha understood and soared faster towards the ruins where Jurgen had crashed through. Luke knew Jurgen was still alive. The Earth was his domain, and although he was gifted with great talents by Raguel, he knew somehow this extra strength he possessed came from the scar on his neck. He always touched it when summoning Iumenti and now demons.

Alpha dropped Luke near the crash site. Rocks were still collapsing as Jurgen pulled his way out of the rubble covered in a suit of stone which cracked apart as he surfaced.

"The fruit is delivered," Jurgen spat blood from his mouth. Clearly the suit of stone he encased himself in to survive the fall only protected him by so much. "By killing me, you solve nothing. You didn't learn your lesson in the arena."

"And neither did you," Luke retorted knowing the Divine Blaze would be enough to end this fight.

"I have my reason for fighting," Jurgen said. "What's yours Luke? You fight for this youth camp that brainwashes children and force-feeds them food to turn them into killers. And for what? To serve a tyrant that doesn't care for them? To serve a despot who dictates suffering and embraces misery? Where is your God now? That's right, he's in hiding."

Luke heard Uriel hint at the possibility that God was somehow absent at the moment, but he never went into detail about it. If the archangel confirmed it, then it meant Jurgen was basing his anger on some facts—God had somehow left humanity to its own devices and they were destroying themselves.

But he didn't leave them without any help. "God might be gone, but his son lives in all of us and..."

"Please, spare me the overused Christian tropes," Jurgen spat. "God, Jesus, Spirit, they're all the same name for a tyrant who has allowed evil to seep through to his followers, masquerading good in a veil of hatred and putting power in the hands of abusers."

"You're one to talk. Last time I checked, I wasn't the one stealing fruit from the Garden and summoning creatures to attack a home that took you in and trained you to survive."

Jurgen laughed at that. "Home? A home is a place where I can be myself. A home is a place where the good live long and don't die young. A home is a place where no one is discriminated because of their uniqueness."

Luke chuckled at that. Discriminated against? What did this white blond boy know about discrimination? More importantly, why did he change the color of his skin to brown when disguising himself as Victor? Talk about walking straight into discrimination. As the mixed child of two unknown parents and adopted by two gay dads, Luke knew all too well what discrimination looked like.

Yet, he never thought about massacring an entire school.

"Just admit you're crazy," Luke said. "You serve Lucifer, the Devil, the mastermind behind evil."

"Lucifer rebelled against God because he was the creator of evil. If Lucifer is evil for seeking equality and independence from a world where God dictates all, then I'm not the crazy one, you are—you all are," Jurgen announced to anyone nearby who was listening in. Mostly everyone else was involved in their battle, but those locked in their houses watching—the youngest ones, the doves, those who haven't distinguished themselves yet, or those who didn't see the need to fight—they heard. Their inaction in the face of adversity spoke volumes.

It seems Jurgen wasn't alone in this line of thought.

But Luke had to show them what happens when you betray his school, the school he had come to love.

Jurgen sent forward a weak attack using the ruins of the mountain he had created. He sent everything he could in Luke's direction.

Luke fired up his hands with a ruby-red blaze that covered both of his hands like welder's gloves. He clapped his hands together and separated them creating a full body shield that blocked all incoming debris and ammunition. Most of the objects went into the red wall and never returned, vaporized into a brown smoke that disappeared.

Jurgen backed up and Luke advanced. Jurgen sent shards of metal and minerals at Luke, but they all either dissolved or bounced off of the static red wall.

Luke knew exactly how to control this ability. He knew how much power he can deal to incapacitate Jurgen and not render him into fry-grilled meat.

Jurgen knew tossing stuff at him wouldn't work, so he redirected his aim at the front gates. If he was going to die, he'll die allowing the flood in.

But the Divine Blaze was too quick. The wall, traveling with the speed of a lightning bolt, trapped Jurgen in a cylinder of fire, choking the oxygen from the air around him, making him sweat and pant as if he was running a marathon in Death Valley.

Jurgen fell to his knees, the tornado of red chaos closing in on him. He activated a bronze shield from his wristwatch with the image of an eagle on the front. He tried hiding behind it, but it was a desperate move at best

"Bernar..." he choked.

Luke allowed the tornado to disappear. He concentrated the Divine Blaze in the tip of his finger. He walked up to Jurgen who was defeated.

But just for safe measures, Luke reached out and allowed a small arch, the amount of shock one gets from turning on a light switch in the middle of winter, to tap Jurgen's head. Jurgen instantly fell into an unconscious state....

And so did Luke.
