CHAPTER 52: THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Luke's decision was sealed once the Bunyip yelped in frustration as the fiery snake, who shot off momentary shocks of static, sunk its fangs into the Bunyip's blubber. The Bunyip swatted the snake with its fins and the flame disappeared. The electric bow Luke had created followed. He knew he needed to conserve as much energy as possible because he wasn't sure what would happen next.

Did Luke's attack work?

Jurgen had already reached the boat and was sailing out into the sea. The sudden low tide was pushing him rapidly out of the cove and then Jurgen disappeared over a horizon of water.

And that's when Luke realized the Bunyip wasn't falling back because it felt defeated. It was setting itself up for an attack. Luke could finally see why this pathetic looking thing was a Level 3 Iumenti.

Rising behind it was a tidal wave that could submerge the entire beach in feet of water, drowning them all.

And there was absolutely nothing Luke could do to stop it. He had no control over water. His powers wouldn't help him. This creature knew his weakness.

Maybe I can make a run for it, Luke thought. But he didn't allow Jurgen to escape just to watch his friends die two minutes later. Yet, if he went in to save them, he knew he would just die alongside them.

Luke's feet were locked in the sand, refusing to flee or rush in.

The wave of water crested over the Bunyip. It flowed around it and was about to douse the group with water.

Then something unexpected happened. Sirius put one hand forward against the wall of water. The water stopped rushing forward. The Bunyip growled and strained. Sirius kept one hand on the burn near his right eye, gritting against the pain. Water was spilling from the top of the wave like an overflowing bowl and the water level rose up to Sirius's thighs.

As Sirius seemingly held back the mini tsunami with his will, he knew he'd need more strength to push the wave back. He let go of his burn and cursed in pain as the burn was exposed to the air. Luke could barely see since his back was towards him, but Sirius seemed to tilt his head down beneath his arms as he held both hands against the wall of water. The burn left a sunspot mark on the eye socket area, as if he saw the world through a veil of darkness in one eye.

Then Sirius let out a loud war cry that reverberated against the water, sending out a shock wave that exploded the liquid wall. It collapsed vertically downward and Sirius pushed further, sending the water deep past the closing cove. The Bunyip scrapped its blog body against the walls of the cove and Sirius fell to one knee.

Luke rushed towards him, his feet working again. Sirius was panting as Luke got to him.

"Dude, you alright?"

Sirius didn't raise his head but glanced at him with the new scar on his right eye facing Luke. "Finish it Luke."

Luke nodded and went to work summoning a different weapon with a long nose, a scope, and a barrel that could deliver a projectile at the speed of hundreds of miles an hour. Luke had doubts about finishing Jurgen, but he held no doubts obliterating an Iumenti who scarred his best friend.

In his right hand he created a small bullet with sharp claws of fire and flaming tentacles for a mouth that was shaped like a collective star.

Luke loaded the star-nosed mole inside the electric sniper and allowed the two elements to fuse and like a toaster oven, it rang with a ding when they were synchronized.

He placed the electric scope close to his eye, but not too close that the recoil could blind him. The Bunyip was recovering deep out in the cove from having its element used against it. But it was trying to move the tide inward to have a second go at the group.

Luke pulled the trigger and watched as the sniper faded in his hands once the bullet left. His concentration was now on the electric flame that flew in the air. He hoped the mole wouldn't fade in the wind. But as the bullet was being punished by the air, he noticed a lot of smoke billowing from the bullet like an airplane shot from the sky.

Come on, Luke thought. Just a few more seconds.

Then he heard it. The whelp of the Bunyip was music to Luke's ears. The electric-fire show afterwards was like fireworks on the Fourth of July. The water around the Bunyip started to conduct the electricity around the creature and it shocked and seized until it collapsed into the water, sending a splash into the air.

The Bunyip never resurfaced.

Luke sighed. Finally, one problem was solved. He returned to his friends. Alpha had stopped vomiting, and Sirius was trying to heal himself, but no matter what he did, his healing was like mascara to cover the scar—it couldn't make it go away.

"You might need an eyepatch," Alpha burped and shuddered. "Pirate Sirius master of the waves and his Uriel crew."

Luke was glad Alpha brought up the whole controlling the waves thing. Just add another power to Sirius's growing list. This guy was a jack of all trades. Luke was kept wondering if he was the one—the one in the prophecy he was supposed to side with to stop evil.

"Yes, and my first order of business is to make you walk the plank," Sirius smiled. Even amongst all of this, the burn, losing Jurgen, and even his own memory lost, he found a reason to smile.

Then another reason made everyone's heart stop.

A new voice called from the group. It was shrill and high pitched, like an infant trying to mouth its first sentence. "Wha—where am I?"

They all looked at Nil who stood up lost in the cove of mankind's birthplace.
