I could hear Keigo's loud voice before I even entered the kitchen where my mother and he were discussing something. My mother smiled at me as she handed me a plate with some slightly cold toast.
"Good morning sweetie," Mum said, "Keigo here has been telling me all about his dream of being a hero while you were still getting ready."
"Yeah, yeah," I brushed off her comment on my slowness in the morning and took a bite of my breakfast, "Morning to you too."
Keigo laughed at me as I hurriedly ate my food. My mother hummed a sweet tune as she busied herself with the dishes while Keigo looked around the kitchen, unable to sit still for too long. Once I was finished, I quickly double-checked my bag and gave mum a quick side-hug goodbye as Keigo was already halfway out the door.
"Bye!" He called out to my mum as I closed the door behind us, and we went on our way.
We didn't talk much during our walk, but it was a comfortable silence. He continued humming the tune my mum was singing along with the talkative birds. I was about to comment on the birds when one of our friends came running up to us from the direction of our school we had nearly arrived at.
Kai, a quirkless boy we had met during our second year of middle school, waved to us, "Morning guys!"
"Hey," Keigo said casually, while I just nodded a greeting.
"Oh, Y/n, did you catch the latest episode of [favourite show] last night? It was so cool!" Kai said as he pushed himself between me and Keigo.
I was a bit annoyed by that, and disappointed that I was separated from my winged friend. Keigo was clearly a bit taken aback as well because he stepped in front of us and got his wings ready for takeoff.
"Uh, I'm feeling a bit lazy today, I'll just fly ahead," He said and left quickly.
"Keigo-" I said but he was already too far gone.
Kai punched my shoulder playfully, something I wouldn't have minded if it was Keigo instead, "Aw, leave him, he probably wants to go catch his crush at the school gates or something," I sighed, "Anyway, have you been studying for exams? I know I'm gonna pass with flying colours, so come to me if you need help!"
"Hm, sure..." I said, worried about why Keigo would leave us so suddenly, not really paying attention to Kai.
I grabbed my phone and called him, not worried about Kai caring if I did as he was talking about himself endlessly. Keigo picked up after a good few rings, which worried me he was gonna ignore me.
"Hullo?" He said through the bad connection.
"Why'd you leave us so suddenly?" I asked quickly, not bothering with any idle conversation.
"Oh, uh," He hesitated to answer, "I thought... Well, wouldn't you rather be alone with Kai? I don't wanna get in your way of anything."
"Dude, I'd prefer to be with you right now. Kai's just talking about himself and hasn't even noticed I'm not even paying attention to him," I complained and Keigo laughed.
"Well, sorry then," He said, "I'm in class already so I'll just wait here for you."
I picked up my pace as I entered the school gates. Keigo smiled happily once I entered the classroom. He sat in the desk in front of mine, so he sat backwards in his chair so we could talk easily. Unfortunately, one of Keigo's many fangirls rudely sat on my desk in front of me. Keigo was a bit too nice to tell that girl to piss off, so I just got out my phone and played some games until class started, so it was usually like this most mornings.
Lunch finally rolled around, after a gruelling maths test, so I got up to grab lunch from the cafeteria. I offered to grab Keigo a sandwich while I was down there and he happily said thanks. On my return, I saw a cute girl in front of Keigo's desk with a bento box. I hesitated to interrupt them so I waited near the front of the classroom.
"Uhm! I made this for you Keigo!" She said excitably as she showed him the box.
Keigo looked stunned for a second before his cheeks turned red as his wings. He stumbled over his words before he said, "I'm sorry, I've already got my lunch! I'm sure it tastes amazing!"
The girl didn't seem to be phased and apologised herself before going back to her friends who all started asking her questions and giggling.
I ungracefully put Keigo's chicken sandwich in front of him and his face lit up, "Here you go, chicken nugget."
He smiled at the nickname and we ate lunch quite happily, and even Kai managed to not talk about himself the whole time.
That night after school, as I was scrolling mindlessly through social media, I received a text from Keigo.
Chicken nugget
>hey hey bestie
Uhm hello? What's up?<
>nothin just bored
Oh really?<
>u got me lol
>im trying to sleep but
i cant ;-;
What should I do?<
Need me to come over?<
>nah but can u ring me?
Always :)<
His call came not even ten seconds after my last message.
"You good?" I asked as soon as I accepted the call.
"Eh, just struggling to sleep. Thought maybe if you sang me a song I might be able to!" I could hear the tiredness in his voice behind the joke and sighed.
"I don't know about that, but I'm happy to talk for a bit," I whispered in fear of waking the others in the house.
"I was wondering if you wanted to sleep over tomorrow? I can invite Kai too if you want."
"Ugh, I'll go if Kai doesn't, I really can't stand him," I groaned and Keigo laughed, a sound that aways brought pleasant butterflies to my stomach.
"Aw, c'mon, you two would be great for each other! He obviously likes you!" Keigo said, sounding too serious for my liking.
I shook my head, "Well, sucks to be him I guess, my heart already belongs-"
I stopped myself before I accidently let anything slip.
"What?! Your heart what? Belongs to someone? So you do have a crush then?" Keigo asked very excited, bombarding questions at me, "Ah, oops, I woke up mum. Anyway, good night! I'll see you tomorrow!"
Keigo hung up before I even had a chance to say good night. I laughed as I put my phone away, only slightly anxious about nearly confessing to Keigo.
