31. What you wish for (Lié)
KM-13 spent a few minutes searching through networks, finding a few locations. I had given him the map I had of Hades' ship. The ship would be the first place we visited. I thanked him but he didn't even look at me nor did he respond.
He teleported to the Hubris with me and we took course for the ship I had left not too long ago. I had left my techdevice on Lukra. My hands were itching for it. It did not take us very long to reach the ship. KM-13 hid us from the scanners and then we teleported. KM-13 went to the cockpit to take over the ship single-handedly while I went back to Hades' sleeping chamber. I killed a few guards along the way. The room was empty except for a techdevice lying on the bed. I did not touch it but it started playing a video the moment I walked in. The video showed Hades looking at me with a secretive smile on his face, it was playing on repeat.
I made my way to the cockpit. KM-13 had not left any survivors, the floor was splattered with blood all around. The smell made me feel nauseous, though I had grown quite used to it.
KM-13 looked confident, determined. He was standing next to the control-board, his eyes filled with pain. I stepped next to him, ready to go back to the Hubris and move on to the next location.
A sudden change in KM-13's expressions caused me to turn around. An old man stood in between piles of bodies. I recognized him immediately as he walked towards us, slowly and calmly.
I took out my gun, ready to shoot at any moment. He stopped walking a few meters away from me, and he smiled as his eyes laid to rest on me. He didn't say a word as he kneeled down to place a techdevice on the ground between us. Getting back up was a bit of a struggle for him, his muscles weak from old age.
"What is this?", I asked panickily, lifting my gun as if threatening him.
His smile widened and after a while he said: "You can shoot me. I am ready to leave this prison."
A sudden wave of anger and a whole new type of tension rose inside me. "DEFEND YOURSELF!", I yelled.
He was not the kind to be easily surprised but the feeling did pass through his face briefly. His eyes wandered to KM-13, expectantly. KM-13 stood still like a stature, having no intention to interfere with this situation.
I took a step towards Hades but he didn't so much as blink. "AAAH!", I screamed. No reaction.
Eventually I composed myself, taking a different stance. "Tell me why you are doing this.", I demanded.
He clapped mockingly before he said: "All life is a prison."
"That's not true", words shot out of my mouth quickly. "There is a way out. I know there is."
He smiled at me compassionately. "I'm surprised you have so much hesitation shooting an old man. Do you not know how many people I have killed?", he mocked me.
"What code of ethics is it that allows you to kill my guards but not me? Or do you still care for me?", he asked investigatively. The thought seemed to amuse him.
"You did come here to take my empire, didn't you?", he asked. Standing for this long seemed to exhaust him. "Well, it is right there. Take it."
He took out a small black gun and aimed it at the techdevice he had placed in front of him. I could tell he was anticipating to shoot. Then he laughed and he lowered his weapon. He looked at me like I was the only thing in this world he cared about, like a proud father giving his daughter one last look. Then he shot. Parts of his brain flew out of the back of his head.
KM-13 did not hesitate to take the techdevice Hades had left. A few seconds later he handed it to me, then he teleported away. The device felt cold and heavy in my hands. I couldn't take my eyes off Hades' dead body. I sank to the floor, the world turning around me.
