10. A new beginning (Leo)
I had dreamed about the day that I would finally be captain of a ship since I was a child. After a short briefing, I and the other graduates were sent off to the spaceport where we would inspect our ships for the very first time. I had never been this excited in my whole life. The other graduates arrived at the spaceport together with me. I used my techdevice to log into the spaceport systems. Navigation to my ship started automatically. My techdevice directed me through the route with the least traffic but I had to push people aside as I made my way through the spaceport anyways. Some of them were already stepping out of my way when they saw my uniform. But I was only a lower ranking Lex, Ring 3. I knew that once I reached Ring 1 I would not be forced to push strangers out of my way any longer. Of course that was the least of my intentions to be promoted. It was a motivation nevertheless. I could feel my heart beating and the sweat dripping off my forehead as I got closer to my ship.
I was not disappointed.
She was beautiful. 30 meters high, 50 meters wide and 100 meters long. She was made off a blend of onyx-black metals, graced with golden lines. Intricate patterns embellished the dark onyx from all sides. I had to take a moment to take everything in. Loud strangers were talking all throughout the spaceport, their voices echoing in the spaciously build structure.
I took out my techdevice to log into my ship for the very first time. The ship's name was Jussum. My techdevice showed me a map of the ship's inside. I was not disappointed.
"Open the bridge", I commanded. My techdevice followed the instructions given and I stepped into my ship for the very first time. My crew was lined up at the ship's entrance. The ship's crew consisted of 30 soldiers, 3 cleaners, 2 cooks, 3 mechanics, 1 nurse, and 1 strategic advisor. I was not sure how long they had waited for my arrival. I shook everyone's hand excitedly and gave them a confident captain nod.
"First meeting in the cockpit in 5 minutes", I shouted after I had greeted all of them.
Then I took out my techdevice and started learning the crew's names. I would be the type of captain that remembers every single one of my subordinate's by name. They would learn to revere me, becoming my loyal and sincere subjects.
I walked through the halls of Jussum with my eyes focused on the pictures of my crew. I only looked up from my techdevice when everyone had arrived in the cockpit. Not one of them was late. They looked at me in a way that nobody had ever looked at me. I was used to an undeniable sense of respect, but this was more than that. This crew was ready to fight for me.
I enabled the microphone on my techdevice. The loudspeakers throughout the cockpit amplified my voice.
"In only a few minutes, you and I will take off together for the very first time," I said, tears of joy streaming down my cheeks.
"We have come together to help maintain order to the universe." I paused.
"The Lex are the most powerful, the most extraordinary and the most bravehearted force in the universe. We are taking off tonight, representatives of universal justice. We are taking off to help maintain an order that is central to the societies of thousands of planets."
I lifted one fist to the air. "Let's make an end to Chaos and lawlessness."
Some crew members shouted in agreement, others were nodding quietly.
A few minutes later the ship left the spaceport. My advisor, Mr. Heydrich complimented my speech. We sat down together to discuss. Mr. Heydrich had served under the previous captain of Jussum too. Sadly, the previous captain had died during a pirate attack.
The Jussum had since gotten a security upgrade. In terms of technology it was now absolutely suitable for a Lex captain.
I could not wait to be given a chance and finally prove myself worthy of being a Lex. After all of the nights I had spent alone studying, now was the time that I could finally put my skills to use. There was a meaning for my life.
I stood in the cockpit with Mr. Heydrich, staring into the endlessness of the Universe. All I could see was opportunity.
