8 First Day Blues and Detentions

Y/N walked down the hallways until he got to charms class. He was the first one to arrive and sat next to the teacher at the front of the row. The rather short Professor Flitwick seemed uneasy.

This class had the Gryffindors with the Hufflepuff first years. Y/N sat and could feel the teacher eyeing him nervously.

"What are we learning today Professor?" Y/N asked.

"We are learning the light spell lumos today Mr. D-Deimos" the teacher replied back.

Y/N looked at him before lifting his wand just as Hermione walked in the class with Harry, Ron and a couple of other Gryffindors.

Lumos

His wand lit up brilliantly.

Nox

His wand went out.

"Since I already know the spell may I go to the library sir?"

"W-Why do you want to go to the library Mr. Deimos?" The teacher asked still obviously nervous.

"Well firstly you are nervous around me, secondly they" he pointed directly at Hermione without turning his head away from the Professor "have made it abundantly clear they don't want to be anywhere near me. I'd rather work in the library and be by myself than distrupt a whole class full of people who hate me".

The teacher nodded his head. "Very well. Your first assignment will be a two foot parchment on the qualities of the light casting spell. It's due next week, you can start working on it."

"Thank you sir" Y/N said, getting up and walking out the class with his bag on his shoulder, not even stopping to look at the other Gryffindors who were staring at him.

There were a couple who were feeling very sad for the boy.

Y/N sat in the library reading on the light casting spell. Within half an hour he had finished the two foot scroll and started looking through the many shelves of books. One there caught his eye.

Spells for Duelling.

He picked it off the shelf and took it to the Administration desk.

"Can I check this out please miss"

"Madam Pince. And why would Y/N Deimos want a book on duelling?" She asked eyeballing the kid.

Y/N instantly got the feeling he could trust her. She was grumpy and even looked mean, but she reeked of honesty- even if it was an unpleasant honesty.

"Madam, I haven't even been here 24 hours and I'm the most hated kid at the school. I've already been physically assaulted by a prefect. How long til the hexes and curses start".

He sighed.

"I just want to learn how to defend myself".

In truth he knew how to duel. He knew how to hurt people, how to kill people, how to make people beg for death before the end. His mother had given him quite the education. As far as defending himself against a bully, without being sent back to Azkaban that is, on that he was a little unprepared. Bellatrix taught to kill, not to defend yourself.

She narrowed her eyes before checking out the book and handing it to him. He thanked her and left the library. He had a study period starting in a minute so he figured he would sit in the sun and read.

He hadn't been there five minutes when he saw a figure walking passed him who looked really upset. He called out to them.

Harry and Ron were sitting in the great hall at their study period, Harry was trying to figure out how to start his charms assignment, Ron was playing with his rat. Suddenly Neville came in and sat down with a huge smile on his face.

"You look happy Neville" Hermione said, looking up from her book.

He held up his wand.

Lumos

His wand shone brightly

Nox

The light went out.

"Whoa how did you do that Neville?" Ron asked. No one in charms, once the monster had left, was able to do it. Hermione got a small shimmer but that was it.

"Y/N taught me. He's really nice, and a really good teacher". Neville said proudly pulling out his parchment to start writing.

"Neville he's a monster. You can't trust him." Ron screamed at the top of his voice. It gained the attention of everyone in the hall.

"You're wrong Ron. He's a really nice person. You just hate him because of his parents."

"Yeah he's just like them"

"You don't even know him. You haven't even spoken to him."

Neville got up and packed his gear before angrily walking to the last class of the day.

"Maybe he's right Ron, he's only been nice to me" Harry said quietly.

"You can't trust him Harry. He's a Deimos. He's probably working for the Dark Lord undercover".

Harry looked down and spoke even quieter.

"Maybe you're right".

Hermione listened to everything from further down the table but didn't say anything, she just packed up her gear and headed to class.

The Gryffindors and Slytherins had History of Magic last. Hermione looked around and noticed Y/N wasn't there.

It was an hour from hell. Most of the class fell asleep. Hermione tried desperately to stay awake and take notes as the ghost teacher Professor Binns droned on and on in the same monotone voice about what they would study for the year as well as their assessments. At 2:58 she noticed the class door open, Y/N quietly walking in and sitting next to Neville at the back of the class. As the bell went and Binns finished speaking Y/N grabbed the quick quotes quill he must have set up and the parchment it had written on. He smiled at Neville who was asleep and drooling before gently waking him up.

"Hey Nev, class is over man"

Neville woke up and yawned.

"Thanks Y/N"

"No worries bud, I'll make a copy of the parchment and give to you tonight".

With that he got up and left. Hermione noticed the whole thing and felt even more conflicted. She headed to the library to finish her charms assignment and noticed Y/N at a table. She sat at the next table over. She glanced at him occasionally but he didn't look up from his book until Madam Pince came over to him.

"Y/N, I spoke to the Headmaster about what we discussed earlier. He was worried you would be bullied, he wants to have a chat to you in your free period tomorrow. Until then here's another couple of books on defensive magic. I've already checked them out in your name".

Hermione was surprised. She had, perhaps foolishly, listened to what Ron had said. She had read about the wizarding war, and about Y/N's parents after Ron mentioned who they were.

He wasn't exaggerating, they were foul horrible people. But Y/N didn't seem like them, but that was before he found out Hermione was muggle born. But he was really nice to Neville and seemed to be looking out for him.

Hermione went back and forth about it in her head. By the time she realised she had been daydreaming Y/N had left the library. She tried to brush it off and concentrate on her assignment.

Y/N walked to the great hall for dinner, to be greeted again by a large number of stares. He put his head down and walked passed them all, trying to not let it get to him.

He sat down the very end of the table by himself and started eating alone- until something surprising happened.

Neville came and sat with him.

"Can I sit here Y/N?"

Y/N looked up stunned.

"Of course you can Neville, if you want to?"

Neville smiled, showing off his buck teeth. "Thanks for waking me up this morning, and for help after charms, and for waking me up again in History of Magic"

Neville laughed at his own comment. Y/N smiled. It was the first time he remembered smiling in a long long time.

"No worries Neville, I'll help you out however I can, just let me know". He handed him the parchment he had made him on the notes from History of Magic.

Neville smiled and nodded before stopping.

"Why?"

Y/N hoped he wouldn't ask that.

"Well... I just want to Neville. I like you".

It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either.

"Ok. Thanks Y/N. I'm glad you're my first friend at Hogwarts".

Y/N stopped and stared. Just stared. Neville got nervous.

"Sorry if I said something wrong, it's just..."

Y/N cut him off quickly. "No it's not that Neville it's just. I've never had a friend before."

Neville smiled again. "You have now".

Y/N smiled and ate his dinner. He couldn't believe it. He had a friend. A friend who knew who he was, who his parents were, and didn't care.

Oh no. His parents. Once Neville found out what they did. Y/N panicked inside but tried to remain calm on the surface.

Dinner finished and Y/N stood up.

"Did you want to hang out in the common room Y/N?" Neville asked in a hopeful tone.

"I can't Neville, I have to go for detention, but maybe afterwards?"

Neville smiled and agreed as Y/N left the table. He walked passed the rest of Gryffindor smiling to himself before he got a big slap of reality.

An older Gryffindor, perhaps a sixth year, had stuck his foot out. Y/N tripped and was so unprepared for it he fell face first into the hard floor.

He heard the crack and felt the sharp pain telling him his nose was broken. He got up as blood poured from it to hear half the great hall laughing. He turned to face the older student pulling out his wand before he heard Percy behind him.

"Threatening another student. That's another weeks worth of detentions Deimos".

More laughter.

Y/N closed his eyes as he lowered his wand. Why wasn't it enough to just hate him. Why couldn't they leave him alone.

He opened his eyes and stared straight at the bully. His eyes hardened, went cold as his mind filled with the hatred and anger he tried his hardest to suppress.

"You better watch your back you piece of shit. You're gonna pay for that".

It was the bully's turn to be scared now. Y/N turned and walked out slamming his shoulder into Percy on the way passed hard enough to make the red haired douchebag hit the floor hard.

"Another week that's three Deimos. They should have left you in Azkaban".

Y/N kept walking, he felt himself breaking down and didn't want to give them the satisfaction of seeing it. He made it outside the great hall and ran. He ran as fast as he could not stopping when McGonagall called out to him after seeing the blood gushing out of his nose and down his shirt. He didn't stop until he made it outside the castle and to Hagrid's hut.

He fought back tears again and knocked on the door. The giant opened and answered with a friendly voice.

"Ello Y/N, Professor McGonagall said you..." he stopped as he saw the state Y/N was in. He rushed the boy inside and got him a cloth to hold against his nose, instructing him to hold his head back.

"McGonagall said you were having a hard time but this is... who did this to you Y/N?"

"It doesn't matter sir, I just want to forget it".

"Enough of that sir nonsense. Hagrid is fine Y/N"

Hagrid looked at him with sympathy. Y/N had never felt so pathetic. He averted his eyes to the large black dog which was whinging at his side and started patting him.

The dog instantly panted happily and wagged his tail, joyously accepting the pats.

"That's Fang. He's a big sweetheart and a good judge of character. If that dog likes you it tells me you're a good person. In here."

Hagrid tapped his giant chest.

"Don't you worry about none of them bullies. They're just weak, and think you're an easy target cos you're a first year. You come see me and Fang whenever you need a chat". Hagrid smiled as he spoke, which was a little hard to see owing to his giant beard.

"Thanks Hagrid, What do I need to do for detention?" Y/N said removing the cloth as his nose had stopped bleeding.

"Oh right. Special instructions from McGonagall. She said you and me were to have a nice cup of tea and get to know each other".

That was the strangest thing he'd heard all day as he happily accepted a giant mug from the friendly caretaker.
