Chapter One
The fire was getting out of control fast. The flames were licking up the walls and it was rolling. The smoke was preparing to turn black and Squad 3 and Truck 81 had less than fifteen to find the last civilian and get out before the apartment blew up.
Casey wasn't sure what to do. He was the last one in and...pretty much was gonna be the last one out. Casey stayed low to the floor and felt around on the ground for any body parts.
"Fire department, call out!" Casey shouted.
Casey heard someone yelling quietly for help in the room that he was about to pass by. He kicked the door in and searched the whole room and found a guy in his twenties coughing and breathing hard.
"Here!" Casey said taking off his mask. "Put this on!" The man took the mask and placed it on his face. "What's your name?!"
"James."
"Okay James, I'm lieutenant Casey and I'm gonna get you out of here!" Casey says.
James looked at Casey with wide and a look of recognization filled his eyes. "Casey? Matthew Casey?"
Casey frowned at James and said, "Yeah. Is there..."
"I'm real sorry about this dude." James said.
"About what?"
James didn't say anything as he launched himself at Casey, sending him stumbling backwards towards the window. James threw a righthook at Casey's face and he stumbled back again, crashing into the window....and falling out.
***********
Casey hung out of the ten story window for dear life while staring up at James, who was leaning out of the window.
"James..James help me up. Whatever you've gotten yourself into, we can help you!" Casey told him, trying not to panic.
"I can't. Voight's gonna let me ride for this." James said. He walked away from the window leaving Casey to hang there shocked.
"James!" Casey's fingers were slipping from the windowsill.
"Casey what's you're position?"
"Well for one I'm hanging outside of a window for my life and I can't talk to you!!" Casey shouted. "SEVERIDE!"
"I'm coming Casey! Hang on!"
"I don't know how much longer I can hold on for! I'm slipping!" Casey shouted. His fingers slipped completely of the windowsill and he screamed--
Casey shot straight up in bed, sweating and gasping for breath. That was the fifteenth nightmare he's had in a week. Voight gets out of jail, hires someone to kill him...he dies. In every dream.
Casey struggled to calm his breathing and careful not to wake a sleeping Gabby, he quietly slipped out of bed and pulled on some pants and a shirt. He threw his shoes on and made his way downstairs. He needed some air or he'd scream in frustration.
Casey walked out of the apartment, locking the door behind him and strode down the street. He kept his head down and ended up on a path somewhere in the woods. Casey hated having nightmares. They made him seem weak or at least his reaction to them.
As Casey continued to walk he began to get the feeling that he was being followed. It wasn't until he heard a twig snap and a curse that he knew he was. Casey made a break for it, sprinting down the path that was only dimly lit by lamps.
Casey sprinted off the path and into the forrest itself, he knew his way around pretty well but if one thing was certain, he did not want to die in the woods. Nor did he want his body found in the woods. Casey wove through trees and jumped over ditches and dodged bushes, hearing his pursuer behind him. Casey burst out of the trees and into the middle of a busy intersection causing cars to honk at him and people slam on the brakes.
Casey ignored them and kept running. He made it across the intersection and ran into a deserted street. He never saw the car coming.
It slammed into his right side sending him to the gravel. Casey groaned loudly in pain as he rolled onto his back and tried to move. Pain was quickly spreading through his body and he could barely move without pain.
A car door slammed and panting Casey turned his head and saw approaching feet. He raised his gaze and saw Voight smirking down at him. Casey groaned again and turned his head away from him.
"What the hell do you want?" Casey growled out.
"I wanted to talk to you but you ran." Voight drawled.
Casey snorted. "Yeah. Mainly for the reason of you wanting to kill me." He winced in pain and added, "Also you hit me with your fucking car."
"Sorry about that but hey you're right. I do want to kill you." Voight said. "I thought I'd just warn you that I'm coming for you soon."
Casey closed his eyes and just wished he could disappear. This was so not right. He was hurt and lying on the ground at the mercy of a dirty fucking cop, who had threatened him and Gabby in the past and he was still after him.
Casey heard fading footsteps and a car door slam but he didn't open his eyes. He half expected to run him over with his car but nothing happened. He opened his eyes as Voight pulled off and he painfully climbed to his feet. Casey looked around at his surroundings and realized that he was closer to Severide's place than a hospital so he slowly limped his way towards his flat, holding his side which he only just now realised was bleeding.
It was about twenty minutes before he reached Severide's flat and limped up the stairs to his front door. By then his right side was completely soaked in blood. He knocked on the door four times and it was a few moments before it was opened.
"Who the hell--" Severide cut himself off when he saw Casey.
Casey smiled weakly. "Hey. I think I need some help..." Casey trailed off as he collapsed forward into Severide's arms.
"Shit! Casey what did you get yourself into?!" Severide demanded as he dragged him into the apartment and kicked the door shut.
Casey didn't know what to say because his brain was completely hazy and his thinking process wasn't reliable at the moment. Most likely from blood loss.
"Voight." Was all he said before he sort of just fainted.
I know it's been forever but hey, at least ya know I didnt forget about you guys! Especially you chicagopdfangirl
