Summer Madness
"Is it just me or is this town like, weird?" Lorelai voices out as we walk through the Stars Hollow End Of Summer Madness Festival.
The town square was decorated with red banners and some hay barrels to really give you that feeling of 'madness'. There were food carts and game booths everywhere. Some people played and some just ate. Personally, I liked to do both.
Usually, I quite enjoyed festivals. I liked to say I had a lot of fun there. But not when it's during the summer and a boiling 85° fahrenheit. It may not be that hot to you but I felt like I was being roasted for thanksgiving.
"This town has always been weird," my mother says, walking beside me.
"Glad you finally noticed," I added as my eyes scanned the place for a familiar face. I hadn't seen Jess since I'd got back. With my mother constantly watching me and the unpacking I had to do, I've been a bit busy. I was hopping that he'd be here then I could sneak off with an excuse of games. My mother never wanted to follow me when I did those, I could be there for hours and hours.
My searching was interrupted by Rory nudging me slightly. I tear my gaze away from the many people at the festival and look at her questioningly. She caught my eye before looking off into the distance, gesturing me to look as well.
I followed her line of sight to see Jess standing next to the 'Balloon Pop' game booth. He was already staring at me and when I met his gaze, he gave me a small smirk. Despite the hot weather, he was still wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and a pair of dark jeans. Not that I was complaining, he looked good after all.
Jess tilts his head back ever so slightly, as if asking me to join him. I think of a way to escape from my mother before nodding my head at him.
Turning back towards Rory, she gives me a smug smirk. "Thank you," I whisper quietly so only she could hear. I kiss her on the cheek out of excitement, resulting in her making a disgusted face.
"Mum," I begin as I make my way to her. She stopped her conversation with Lorelai before looking at me expectantly. "I'm gonna go play the balloon pop." I continue, trying not to give away how excited I was.
She narrows her eyes at me suspiciously. "Yeah, go ahead. Just remember what I said." She tells me sternly. It was as if everyone morning before we left the house she would tell me to stay clear of Jess. It was as if he was the plague. She should've known by now that it wasn't going to work.
I say a quick goodbye to everyone before making my way over to the game booth. I couldn't see Jess standing there anymore but I tried not to skip my way there anyway. Small smiles were sent my way as I passed the over friendly town people. Sometimes I wanted to curse at them in response, just to see their reaction.
When I reached the game booth I looked around for Jess but I couldn't find him. It was as if he had just disappeared into thin air. Just as I was about to ask the worker there for a game, I saw Jess come up from behind the booth.
I sent him a grin as I spoke. "I don't think you're allowed back there," I joke.
"Well then I guess somebody better call the sheriff," he retorted with his hands in his pockets. When he was close enough he leaned in for a kiss. But I stopped him with a hand on the chest. He raised an eyebrow at the shake of my head. "Is it cause I'm a fugitive?"
I let out a light laugh at his comment. "Well, my mum might see."
He looks around for a moment. "Unless she can turn invisible, I don't see her." He says with a smirk.
"This is a very tiny town," I explained. "If even one person saw us, my mum would know before dinner."
"Fine," he agreed as he puts his hands up. "We'll just have to find some quiet place then." He walks up next to me and puts his arm around my shoulder. I would've told him not to, but it just felt so good I couldn't bring myself to tell him.
"How was your trip?" He asked as we walked around the festival. I felt awkward letting my arms just hang at my side and letting them bump into his sides. Knowing in my head that it was a very bad idea, I put my arms around Jess' waist. Completely ignoring the 'don't attract too much attention' plan.
"It was fine, the food was pretty good," I told him as I tried not to make eye contact with anyone. I didn't want to see their questioning looks. "You know, my mum isn't very fond of you right now."
Jess sighs knowingly. "Yeah, she gave me this whole talk about staying away from you."
"That's funny, cause she said the same thing to me." We stop walking when we reach the cotton candy machine. I ask the worker there for one stick. Jess interrupts and says that he wants one as well. As I made a move to pay Jess covered my hand with his and handed a few bills to the man.
"We're not gonna listen to her though, right?" Jess asks as he hands us our cotton candy.
"When have I ever listened to my mother?" I tell him as I pinch a bit of the fluffy treat between my fingers before popping it into my mouth.
"Good," he starts before we continue to walk around the festival. "Are you busy tonight?"
I look up at him with furrowed eyebrows. "Unless you count watching all the Rocky movies busy, then no." I tell him. "Why?"
He just shrugs before swallowing what was left of his cotton candy down his throat. "Just thought that you'd like to come with me to a concert. Well, more specifically a few line ups."
I stop walking and push his hand off my shoulders. "No, no way!" I exclaim in excitement. It's been forever since I've been to a concert. "Who's playing?"
"Good Charlotte," he says as if it's no big deal that we might actually go to their show.
"I don't believe it!" I jump up and down in excitement, almost taking out someone's eye with my cotton candy stick.
"Then you definitely won't believe me when I say that Jimmy Eat World and Sum 41 is playing there as well," he grins coyly as I look at him with my mouth agape.
"Are you kidding me?" I ask him seriously. "Cause it's not funny."
Jess puts on a thoughtful look as I try to contain my excitement by grabbing on to his arm. "I don't think it's a joke since Blink-182 is gonna be there."
I didn't understand how he could remain so calm when we could be in the crowd while the best band ever was playing a live show. "If you're messing with me, I'll never forgive you."
He smirks before reaching into his back pocket slowly, earning a whine from me. He pulls out two tickets that make me squeal and jump into him. I wrap my arms around him, jumping as I do it. "Yes, of course I'll go with you!" I hug him tightly as I hear his laugh through his chest.
"I'm just glad I can finally bring my girlfriend out on a proper date," he says once we pull away.
"Date? I'm your girlfriend?" I ask with a small blush on my cheeks.
"Only if you want to be," he tells me smoothly.
"Hmm," I say as I but on a thinking face. "Let me think about it." Jess stared at me with a curious expression, as if trying to decide if I mean it or if I was joking. "I guess I could," I say as if it was no big deal. In reality it was a huge deal. I had a boyfriend. It felt weird to say that. Jess was my boyfriend. That was even weirder.
Jess looked at me for confirmation. "Are you sure? Cause I don't want you to agree only cause I want it."
I felt myself swoon even more if that was possible. "I'm sure."
He looked down on me with a smile on his face. He took a quick look around before pressing a soft kiss to my lips. He pulled away before I could even object that anyone could see us.
"Now I'm not so sure, I think we need to try that again." Jess said cheekily.
"We'll have all the time to do that at the concert tonight," I tell him. "What time does it start?"
He checks the tickets. "Seven, but we'll have to leave here at five."
"Why?"
"Cause the concert is in New York," he shrugs.
I stared at him with wide eyes. "New York?" I exclaim. "We can't go to New York!"
"Why not?" He asked as if it genuinely confused him why I couldn't go to a whole other state for a concert with a guy my mum would kill me if I was caught with.
"My mother would kill me! Right after stabbing you to death."
He groans before taking both my hands in his. "Come on, live a little," he tried convincing me while looking into my eyes. "You only get one life, and it moves pretty fast if you don't stop to enjoy it."
"Calm down, Ferris Bueller." I joke with a small smile at his words.
"Is that a yes?" He challenges with a hopeful smirk.
I check the time on his watch, it was only twelve in the afternoon, I'm sure I could make up a sorry to tell my mum in a few hours. "It's a plan, meet me at my window at four."
