Chapter two of Cherish.
Shutting the car door behind herself, Inanna glanced over to Five in the driver's seat, "Do you even have your licence?" Inanna asked as Five started up the car.
"Can't be too hard. Like riding a bike," Five shrugged.
Inanna averted her gaze to the street ahead of them as she pulled the seat belt across her chest. The last thing she wanted was to go flying out of the car when (not if) Five crashed, "Do you even know how to ride a bike?" Inanna asked.
Five shrugged again and he pressed his foot down on the accelerator causing Inanna to grip the edge of the car seat as they began driving, "Like I said, can't be too hard," Five responded.
"Don't make those your famous last words".
—————
"I said 'Don't make those your famous last words'. They were my exact-".
"You're still breathing," Five interrupted Inanna. He didn't need to look at her to know that she was angry, anyone including himself would be if they were hanging upside down in a car. "Keep talking and a possible concussion will be the least of your worries".
Inanna turned her head as far as she could to look at Five next to her but stopped when a sharp pain shot down the side of her neck where her seat belt sat. Inanna winced, screwing her eyes tightly shut.
"I said don't move".
Inanna gritted her teeth together, "I'm supposed to listen to you after you didn't listen to me?" Inanna pushed her hand against the roof of the car that laid below her.
"Do you want my help or not?".
"No," Inanna shook her head and instantly regretted doing so as the pain in her neck only worsened.
"Unbuckle your seatbelt and I-".
"Brilliant plan".
Five's lips pressed into a tight line and for a split second as he turned his head to look out the window he considered leaving Inanna but deep in his gut he felt a ping of guilt that only grew when he looked back at her.
"What's your plan then? Stay here and let the blood rush to your brain?" Five asked.
"Sounds better than letting you catch me. I'd rather not break my neck".
Five leaned his head back against the driver's seat. Driving was nothing like riding a bike, although Five didn't think that he was the best to compare, when Inanna was learning to ride a bike at the park Five was learning how to kill a man double his size.
"Just trust me".
Inanna's laugh turned into a wheeze and she moved her right hand to her chest. Inanna wasn't certain and she was definitely no doctor but Inanna believed she had bruised or even broken a rib.
Inanna didn't want to trust Five but she didn't think she had much of a choice. It was either stay in the car, get herself out or trust him and the latter seemed like the best option while her blood flooded her head.
"On three then," Inanna muttered.
Five raised his brow, somewhat shocked that Inanna wasn't going to fight him anymore. In the two hours that Inanna had come to realise that she didn't like Five Hargreeves and his stubbornness, Five had decided that being trapped in time (hopefully not for long) with Inanna — although argumentative and somehow more threatening than himself — was better than being alone.
Inanna turned her head towards Five, as far as she could. "Keep looking at me like that and I will strangle you with a seat belt".
"That would be rather entertaining seeing as you can barely look at me".
"And who's fucking fault is that?" Inanna turned away from Five and hid her pained expression the best she could as she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth.
Five was stubborn, he knew that but what Five was also starting to understand was that Inanna was just as stubborn and Five believed that if he didn't get them out of the car in the next thirty seconds, Inanna would stay there or further injure herself trying to get herself out.
"On three then?" Five asked.
Inanna rolled her eyes but agreed nonetheless. "On three," Inanna mumbled.
Five sat his hand on Inanna's thigh and ignored the sharp glare she shot at him. Inanna wanted to push his hand off her because surprisingly the direct contact of his oddly warm, yet cold hand on her skin didn't feel uncomfortable at all but before Inanna could shove him away and suggest another means of escape, Five counted to three and blinked them out of the car before Inanna had taken her seat belt off.
Landing on the hard, rubble covered ground beside the car, Inanna closed her eyes. Her heart felt as if it was going to jump out of her chest and Inanna rested the palm of her hand over her chest.
Five moved his hand from Inanna's thigh and dropped his arm to his side. "You couldn't have done that five minutes ago?" Inanna didn't open her eyes to look at Five as he stood up.
"I could have," Five tucked his hands into his pockets as a smirk crept onto his lips.
Inanna dropped her hand to the ground at her side and felt something round under her palm as she peaked one of her eyes open to stare up at Five. His smirk never faded and Inanna felt the urge to punch him in his mouth and if it wasn't for the soft bruises that were turning her skin purple she would have.
"Are you going to get up?" Five asked.
"I'm rather comfortable," Inanna lifted her hand up to her face, inspecting the round ball that she had found discarded on the ground beside her as Five looked over his shoulder, taking in the burning buildings that lined the street he saw from his bedroom window. "Someone's missing an eye," Inanna's voice pulled Five back towards her and the prosthetic eye that she held between her finger and thumb.
Five patted his blazer pocket as his eyes widened slightly. His pocket, which had previously held the prosthetic eye and roughly folded page of newspaper, was empty, "Yeah, me," Five extended his hand out to Inanna.
Inanna went to sit up but stopped when a twinge of pain shot across her body. "You got a third eye socket or something?" Five narrowed his eyes, unamused by Inanna's response as she rolled the eyeball between her fingers. "'Cause from here it looks like-" Five snatched the eyeball from Inanna, startling her with his sudden movement. "Hey!" Inanna shouted.
Five tucked the eyeball into the inside pocket of his blazer before extending his hand out to Inanna, "Get up". Inanna didn't move nor take his hand. She had questions about the eyeball which she believed Five wouldn't answer even if she asked them. "It's getting dark and personally I don't want to be still here when the moon comes up".
"Why? Scared of werewolves?" Five glared at Inanna, unamused by her as Inanna took his hand. Inanna sucked in a breath and squeezed Five's hand as Five pulled her up to her feet. She was more comfortable laying on the rubble. "Luckily for you, I don't think it's a full moon tonight".
Inanna's word's went in Five's left ear and straight out of his right. Five was too busy trying to locate the source of Inanna's pain to listen to her. "I think you have whiplash from the crash," Five tilted his head trying to get a better look at Inanna's neck.
"I think I have a fucked up rib," Inanna let go of Five's hand and pulled her shirt up over her ribs to check for any obvious signs like a bruise on her skin. Five averted his gaze to the ground behind Inanna and his eyes caught sight of the front page of a newspaper that had fallen out of his pocket with the eyeball. Feeling that his face had turned a light shade of red, Five didn't look at Inanna as he stepped around her to grab the folded piece of newspaper.
Inanna pulled her shirt down after poking at the reddened skin over her ribs and she turned on the heel of her shoe to see what Five was doing behind her.
Five snatched the newspaper from the ground but before he could slip it into his pocket Inanna snatched it from his fingers. She unfolded the paper and as her eyes scanned over the black inked letters, her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.
"April 1st 2019?" Inanna's mouth had gone dry and she tore her eyes from the newspaper in her hands to Five.
Five tucked his hands into the pockets of his shorts and with a simple nod, he confirmed to Inanna that the date on the newspaper was correct.
"Where did you get this?" Five didn't respond. "Five, where did you get this?" Inanna extended the newspaper towards Five and with her right hand she brushed her hair out of her face.
Five took the newspaper from Inanna, "It doesn't matter-".
Inanna's eyes widened slightly, "It does!" Inanna raised her voice, "Before I hit my head it was June 27th 2005," Five nodded. "Okay, so why do you have a newspaper article from April 2019?".
Five was silent for a moment. When he did his last jump in time, Five could briefly remember a flash of orange that flickered across his eyes and although he couldn't be certain, Five Hargreeves believed that he had somehow taken Inanna Hope with him in his last jump through time. But he couldn't be certain.
"Because that's the date. Today's date".
