Cheese Maggi
A super short romance flash fiction
Two of the boys I had a crush on during my teenage years died in their early twenties.
One of them was the cousin of my cousins (my aunt's daughters). His name was Shivam. I spent my nineteenth summer in the scorching heat of Agra, and it was the best summer of my life.
I was an introvert and struggled to make friends. That didn't stop me from befriending Shivam's sister just to be close to him. She was an amiable girl, but we had nothing in common.
It was him. He was the prize. He had dancing eyes and a motormouth. He pushed boundaries, teased non-stop and bothered elders in the house after midnight with pranks.
That household was utterly different from my proper, conservative one. My aunt never woke the kids in the morning. They woke in the afternoon and stayed up the whole night, going about their days like owls.
Every night for eleven nights, the ritual of making Maggi remained constant. We girls took turns making Maggi for each other; having been introduced to the concept of feminism, we refused to make it for a boy. Shivam, the only boy in the lot, had to make his own Maggi.
Then came the day it was my turn to make it. Everybody else was playing cards in the bedroom. I was grating the cheese for the creamy flavor.
"How about you give me some, and we don't tell anyone?" His murmur close to my ear made me jump.
Warmth rose from my guts to my ears. Without turning my face, I said, "And why would I do that?"
He took some grated cheese from the plate and opened his mouth, leaning back to drop it. "I don't know. You tell me."
Cocky bastard!
I pushed him as I turned to open a drawer and retrieve a bowl.
"Don't you dare tell them?" I stare him down.
"Yes, Ma'am." He flashed his pearl-white teeth and winked at me.
That was the last romantic interaction I had before I was married. After three years, he died of cancer.
