Spitters are quitters

Nikki's POV

"This is so much better than Romeo and Juliet." Naomi said to Paige and I as I pulled into my driveway, "It's borderline perfect."

"So what did they switch the play to?" I asked her as we stepped out of the car. I hug Deans jacket closer to me as the harsh winter wind whipped around us.

"The Six Seeds." She explained to me, "It's a Greek myth about the gods. Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, who is the goddess of Harvest and Hades, the lord of the underworld-"

"So is it going to be a scary play?" Paige piped up suddenly.

"No." Naomi explained, "I think it's more of a love story. You see, there's a story-"

"Sorry then love." Paige said again as we entered the house, "Not too interested in a history lesson. I'm done with school for today."

Naomi playfully rolled her eyes and shoved her as we entered my house, "It's really interesting if you'd just listen."

"You know for a fact that I only listen when there is food involved." Paige said to her and we all laughed as we walked into the kitchen.

"Speaking of food," I say to them, "I went grocery shopping a few days ago, so there should be plenty to eat around here."

"There won't be by the time I leave." Paige said and Naomi laughed as they walked over to the fridge, my phone ringing moments later.

I gave a small smile as I looked at the screens before sliding my finger across it and raising the phone to my ear.

"Well hello Mr.Skipper." I say into the phone as I walked out into the hallway, "To what do I owe this call?"

"I miss school for one day and start speaking all fancy on me?" I hear Dean's raspy voice respond, but it cracking slightly.

"Are you ok?" I asked him, voice filling with concern.

"Have you ever seen, like a cactus on fire?" He asked me, but didn't give me any time to respond, "That's what my throat fills like right now."

I frown, "Dean, baby you should rest. Take some medicine."

"I've been resting all day woman." He responded, "I wanted to hear your voice, it's the only medicine I'll ever need. I just need to stay out of the night air for a while princess, I'll be fine."

"Well alright..." I mumbled.

"Hey stop worrying." He said to me with a small laugh which turned into a small cough, "It's not life or death. If it makes you feel any better, Roman's like throwing up all his guts into the toilet-"

"Gross Dean gross." I say as I shuttered.

"And Seth's playing doctor." He continued with another laugh, "So I could be in a worse position."

"If you wouldn't have called me this morning, we would have come over and helped you boys out." I respond to him.

"We don't need help-" he started to say, then began coughing through his sentence, "Goddamn it."

"Well be over in a hour." I responded to him.

"No-" he stated to say but I stopped him.

"Don't say no to me Dean." I responded to him, "We're coming. Now stay in bed and warm. I love you and I'll see you soon."

He groaned slightly, "I love you too."

"Don't groan at me young man." I said to him with a smile smile before hanging up.

"Who was that?" Naomi asked me as I entered the kitchen.

"Dean." I responded, "We gotta go over there later. He sounds sick as crap. Said Ro was sick too. And Seth probably needs help. God knows they're probably giving him a hard time."

"I don't mind helping." Paige said as she closed the fridge, "How long till we leave?"

"Bout an hour, so relax a bit." I say to them, "I'm gonna go put my bags down."

"Alright babe." Naomi responded as I walked out of the kitchen and towards the stairs, signing at the thought of climbing up them.

Most people as kids, thought that stairs was the coolest thing in the world, but now that I'm older, and have way less energy, they're more of a curse than a blessing.

I groaned as I trudged up the stairs, but sighed in relief once I reached the top.

I quickly walked to my room and threw my bags onto the floor, happy to be through with the school day and thinking of how I only had to do this for a few more months and I would be officially done.

I walked back out into the hallway and began to walk towards the stairs.

"Fucking stop." I heard my sisters voice say along with a loud groan and it caused me to stop for a moment.

I raised an eyebrow at the comment as I walked backwards to her room door.

"Brie?" I asked as I knocked on her door twice.

I didn't get any response and I debated with myself as to weather I really heard her say anything.

I slowly lifted my hand to the door knob twisted, peaking my head into the large room.

Brie's room was bigger than my own, and my room was huge.

A large window on the left wall of the room illuminated it with a soft grey glow, which matched the clouds outside. Despite Brie's ego, it had a nice, down to earth type of feeling when you stepped inside.

Everything was nice and neat, and placed in its proper place.

I spotted Brie's figure in a lump of covers on her bed.

"Brie?" I asked as I slowly stepped into her room, closing the door behind me, "You awake?"

I didn't get a response again, but instead of walking out, I continued to walk towards her bed.

I gently tug on the blanket she had covered herself up with and I finally got her to say something.

"Leave me alone Nicole." I heard her say to me.

"You ok?" I asked her, "I heard you-"

"Will you just leave?" She asked me in almost a pleading tone.

"I just wanted to know if you were ok or not." I said to her.

"I'm fine." She replied, "Now go."

"You don't sound fine." I relived while crossing my arms.

"I sound fucking annoyed, it's probably because I am." She said coldly, "Now leave."

"Brie all I did was ask a question-" I started to say but she stopped me.

"Why are you still here?" She practically whined, but I heard her voice crack slightly, "Just go away Nikki, please. We can talk later, I'm tired, I just wanna go to sleep. Please just leave."

I stayed quite as I glanced down at her. Her head was still hidden under the covers, but just by the way she sounded, I knew something was wrong with her.

"Brie just talk to me instead." I say while sitting down in the edge of her bed.

"Leave Nikki-" she started to say but I stopped her.

"No Brie." I said to her, "I'm not leaving. I'm not your freaking enemy or something, I'm your sister. I'm here for you to talk to."

"You wouldn't understand." She said back to me, "You wouldn't get it. You'd think just like you always have had. You'd say I brought it on myself. You'd judge me. You can't see it from my point of view so you won't get it."

"Will you just sit up and look at me?" I pleaded, "If I don't understand then make me understand. God, Brie why don't you understand that I'm here for you? I'm not like everyone else ok? Yeah, you mess up. I do too. We all do. We fight. That's what sisters do. So push all that aside and just sit up and talk."

She didn't respond to me at first, but seconds later, I saw her slowly push the covers away from her, pushing herself up slowly.

Her eyes remained closed but I could see the tears stains on her cheeks and the blotches of red that always appeared when she became upset.

Her eyes slowly opened and I felt a small pang in my chest as I looked at her.

I don't see Brie so fragile too often. She usually appeared as I strong person. Mean, but strong. She hurts a lot of people, but she's strong. But she she sat before me with new tears already staring to reform in her eyes... She just looked different...

"What's wrong?" I asked her quietly as she stared back at me, "Just talk to me Brie."

She stayed quite for a few moments and tried to wipe her face with her hands.

"I'm just tired, Nikki." She said quietly and I frowned.

I knew what those words carried.

Being tired was being so much more than needing to rest, and I could see that written all over her as she tried to wipe tears away again.

Without thinking any longer, I found myself wrapping my arms around her and pulling her closer to me. Her head resting on my shoulder, but no words came out of her mouth.

I didn't know what to say to her, and it was honestly awkward for the two of us to actually show affection towards each other, but she needed it.

I'm pretty sure I heard Paige's voice come to the door, but I simply ignored it, waning to deal with one problem at a time.

"Swallow it." I scolded at Dean as he made a face as the medicine I had just made him put in his mouth.

"Spitters are quitters." Seth teased as Dean swallowed the medicine and glared at him.

"Your mom should have swallowed you." Dean shot at him and I hit him.

"Your dad should have had you on your moms face." Seth shot back.

"Nice cum-back." Dean said to him and they both started laughing while I shook my head.

"You two worry me sometimes." I mumbled. Unsure of how sometimes when they mention each other's parents, they go into full war, but other times they laugh their asses off.

"What I tell you about worrying about me?" He asked me as he attempted to kiss my cheek but I jerked away from him.

"Your sick, remember." I say to him, "I'm not trying to get sick too."

He groaned, "Fine."

"I think it's time for you to go to bed anyways." I commented, "Come on."

"It's freaking 8:30." He protested.

"Naomi made Roman go to bed at 7:30 so be grateful," I say to him as we both walked out of the kitchen.

"That's because Roman was already tired anyways." He tried to reason.

"Bed. Now." I say while pointing.

He groaned as we entered his room, "Alright, alright."

I smiled slightly as he plopped onto the bed and I walked over and bent down beside his bed.

"You're telling me to go to bed," he commented, "But you look more tired than I do."

"I'm alright." I say as he tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, "you should sleep."

"I wanna talk to you." He responded, "I had a long night, but I'm always gonna make time for you."

"Why'd you have a long night?" I asked him.

"Oh you know," he said casually, "A ex-drug lord came to visit us. The usual."

"Excuse me?" I quickly asked him.

"I said the Pizza man wrecked a truck." He lied and I glared at him, "Baby don't worry about it ok? We're all fine."

"You scare me sometimes." I mumbled and he chucked.

"Now," he said to me, "Wanna tell me what's up with you?"

"I'm fine." I say to him with a small smile.

"I remember my mom saying when I was really young to never trust a women she says she's fine or ok." He said to me, "Also when they say 'I don't care' it means they do care, and 'go ahead' means  your better not do shit."

"Since when have you become the women expert?" I asked him with a small laugh.

"It's just common sense I guess." He said with a shrug, "Now, spill it."

I sighed, "I guess I'm just worried about Brie."

"Why?" He asked me.

"She was all upset and stuff today after school." I told him, "I mean yeah, she's done some bad things Dean. But it really bothered me."

"Was it an act?" He asked me, "I mean I'm not doubting you or anything, but Brie has played our heart strings for her before. I just don't want this to be another stunt."

"I know my sister Dean." I responded to him, "She's not ok, and I don't know what's wrong with her."

"Maybe she'll come around." He said to me, "I mean I guess I should be thinking about her situation too."

"We should." I say with a nod.

"Maybe it's hard on her in different ways." He said with a shrug, "I mean her boyfriend, or whatever Miz is, is a bitch, her best friend is... Y'know..."

"Have you talked to Summer lately?" I asked him and he shook his head.

"Not any full conversations." He said to me, "I don't even know how to talk to her now..."

"She's due in like what?" I asked, "Four more months?"

"Yeah." He mumbled.

I sighed and laid my head on the mattress.

"I wanna let you know how much I love you for staying with me." He said to me quietly, "You didn't have to do that."

"I know I didn't." I say to him, "But being away from you would be done more harm than good. You don't realize how much I love you Dean."

"I realize it babe." He said to me, "I promise I do. Lay with me."

"Your gonna get me sick." I say to him, but climb into his bed anyways.

"I don't care and neither do you." He said as he pressed his forehead against mine. His lips slowly finding their way to my own as the night carried on.
