Chapter 14: Haunting Past
After the horrible death of Rohit, All went to Rohit's home to give their regards to his family. As they went inside, they saw Rohit's body wrapped in white clothing and some flowers were kept besides him. The atmosphere was filled with grim silence and sadness.
Shruti remembered Rohit's face after watching his body, and tears began to roll down her eyes, Monika noticed it and hugged her. They heard some people were discussing Rohit's murder, they were saying that there is no proof of someone killing Rohit. Even the watchman didn't saw anyone coming to Rohit's house that day. It happened on its own, but it was definitely not an accident.
It had become tough to determine whether it was a murder or an accident. Shruti was looking at the photographs in the showcase, it also contained a photo of Shruti and her college group, including Rahul. She went to the picture and noticed a dark skinned boy with them, his appearance was similar with Sameer, when Monika told her about him back.
She removed that picture and slowly went to Monika. "Mona! Is this Sameer?" said Shruti as she pointed her finger towards that boy in the picture.
Monika looked at it carefully and said, "Yes, He is Sameer. But where did you get that picture?"
Shruti said, "I found it in Rohit's showcase."
Monika said, "Did anyone saw you taking this picture out from there?"
Shruti said, "No, I removed it carefully."
Monika said, "Good. Now let's get out from here and tell uncle about this." Soon they both left.
While in the journey. Shruti asked Monika about Uncle.
"Monika! What happened to Uncle's wife?"
Monika said, "Oh! She died in her sleep. But I don't think that's true, uncle never told us the real reason behind her death, but my mother said, that uncle used to summon various spirits for his cases. While Aunty used to support his job. But then something happened and some vengeful spirit killed her in her sleep."
Shruti said, "Oh my God, Uncle seemed really shaken after what happened yesterday. How is he?"
Monika replied, "He's fine now, but he still blames himself for Aunty's death. We all thought that he was going to quit this job but he resumed his job soon after Aunty's funeral. He said that he will not stop helping the people who are in pain." Shruti kept quiet.
When they were home, Monika called uncle to their house. After some hours, Uncle was at their house.
"So this is Sameer!" said Uncle as he looked at the picture carefully. Monika nodded. Shruti seemed lost in thoughts.
Monika asked her, "Shruti! Do you want coffee? I am gonna go make some coffee for us."
Shruti broke from her thoughts and said, "Yeah sure."
Monika went to the kitchen to make coffee.
Uncle said, "This Sameer guy seems mysterious to me. I mean in the picture, he looks so innocent here but the reality seems different."
Shruti said, "I don't care about his innocence, I just want to kill him with my own hands."
Uncle explained her, "That we will see. But Shruti I can understand your anger. But what, even if we communicate with him and he doesn't give the desired answer, because some spirits are just stubborn, they won't go back. The spirit which we are dealing is violent one. We need to be more careful. Like we must have a plan."
Shruti asked, "A plan, what kind of plan?"
Uncle replied, "A plan to trap him and send back him to hell."
Monika came in with coffee and said, "So I was right then, Ghosts do live in hell."
Uncle said, "No Ghosts do not live in hell. They linger on Earth itself, they are dissatisfied souls which are searching for the bodies to complete their unfinished business."
Monika looked in astonishing manner, "Really? So what happens in hell then?"
Uncle said while taking one spoon of sugar in his coffee and stirring , "Well there are many stories behind what happens in hell, I just know that in hell, the souls of the people are tortured or punished for their sins. Every punishment is different for different sins." Shruti and Monika kept listening with interest.
He continued, "Now normally we have been told since childhood that good people go to Heaven after their death while bad people go to Hell, and indeed its true, but there are some bottlenecks even in this. When people die, their soul is taken to the Lord. That's when it's decided whether it will head towards heaven or hell, it is decided according to the person's behavior and his deeds. But the soul is given a choice as well, what if he had to do something before his death and he didn't got chance to complete that work. Then the soul is transferred back to earth and its given a time limit maybe, and if he fails to do so then he is taken back to Lord, and then Lord further decides his fate. As we go deep inside this topic, there's much to learn but some people do not want to believe that there's something more than humanity. It's not an easy job you see."
Monika and Shruti were surprised to learn these things. Uncle smiled at their expressions. "So anything you want to know more?"
Shruti quickly said like a little girl, "Uncle I want to know about your job. I mean how do you handle such cases, communication with spirits must be a tedious job right?"
Uncle said, "Well most people hate my job as it is extremely dangerous but I am now used to it. According to me, there are two sides of a coin, similarly if there is good then there is evil as well."
Shruti said, "Now I get it, I would like to hear about your toughest case."
Monika said, "Whoa! Shruti, let him finish his coffee first."
Shruti bit her lip as she waited for uncle to finish his coffee.
Uncle smiled at Shruti and Monika's words. "Well Shruti, every case is toughest case for me but I will never forget that case in which I lost my wife Sheetal."
Shruti said, "Oh! It's okay if you don't want to tell. I am sorry, I was just curious."
Uncle said, "No I am completely fine. About 2 years ago, a man and a woman came to me and told me that their daughter was possessed by a man's spirit. I examined the case and came to know that the spirit was of a sadistic old man who was sexually attracted to that girl. So he possessed her body and began to harass her physically like making her cut her wrists, and even made her jump twice from the terrace of their building. When I warned the spirit, it refused to leave her body, then I asked what it would take in return to leave the girl's body. That spirit was arrogant it said that it would take something I loved the most in return of that girl's spirit, I was startled that what should I do now. I lied to him that I love myself the most. As soon as I said it, the spirit disappeared and suddenly attacked me when I reached home. I was having dinner with Sheetal at that time. I told her to run away but she stayed with me. I begged her many times to run away, but she sticked to my side. I took our bedroom mirror to trap the spirit, I was very close to send him back into his world but he caught hold of her and her soul was sucked into that mirror with that bastard, She made me remember our wedding vows that she would never leave me till death.
While taking her soul with him, he said that I lied to him. I clearly understood what he meant. He was taking her soul with him and there was nothing I could do. He took her away from me in front of my eyes. I kept crying holding her lifeless body to my chest. I was devastated, and then I realized the value of loved ones. She was the only one that I loved more than my life. "
Monika noticed tears in both Shruti and Uncle's eyes.
Uncle concluded, "Past never leaves our back. It only stays with us forever."
