Chapter 2: Holding Out For You
Y/N's POV:
"Y/N, wake up." An echoing voice pierced my black dream, making my eyes flutter open like a butterfly's wings, gently opening and closing them. I was on my side, and when I looked up, I saw a black cat with evergreen green eyes staring at me. I smiled and reached up for his soft blond hair.
"Pretty Kitty," I whispered, sleepily. The kitty pulled away as soon as he started purring. I yawned and rolled over in my back and stretched, finally fully awake.
"Hey, Chat," I yawned again, staring at him.
"Good morning to you, Kitten," he purred back, stalking around on all fours. I sat up and leaned against the wall, the early morning sunlight warming me as I sat there.
"We don't have all day, Kitten. Let's get going. We're going to go see Alya," Chat said, not leaving his smile behind. I nodded and stood up and walked down the stairs to the main floor of the apartments.
- Alya's Place -
"Chat Noir! Where is Ladybug? Everyone's dying to find out where she's gone!" Alya exclaimed, welcoming us in. "Omg! A new one! Y/N, you didn't tell me you were with Chat and Ladybug!" I rolled my eyes but smiled at her friendly.
"No, Alya. You don't get to ask the questions here. It's my turn," Chat said, winking at Alya's phone before holding up his palm to the lens to hide his face. Alya, looking disappointed, shut off the camera.
"What do you want to know?" She asked, glancing between me and Chat.
"We're looking for Marinette," Chat said, with almost no emotion in his voice. Alya's happy grin dropped to a shocked frown, then down to a grief stricken act.
She hung her head and didn't answer, almost on the verge of tears. Chat's tail lashed through the air impatiently, his eyes narrowed to a boiling glare.
"Please, Alya! You have to know something, heard something, anything!" Chat begged, tensing up his muscles in frustration.
Alya's dark Hazel eyes blinked repeatedly at the floor until her head shot up. A bright and brilliant sparkle flashes in her eyes, but no smile came to her lips.
"I think I have something," She said. "That morning, before she went missing, I got a call from her. All I could hear was static between the words. I thought it was just a joke and didn't think much of it then."
"Can you replay it somehow?" Chat and I asked in almost unison. We swiped a glance at each other, as if asking, How did you know!?
Taking out her phone, Alya tapped at her screen and shifted her eyes across it madly in an attempt to get the call to replay. "Got it!" She exclaimed, pressing a button to amp up the volume.
"Alya..! I'm sorry.... This wasn't... Please... South of the......... Adrien.... It's not his fault!" The call ended with silence.
Chat Noir faces Alya and puts his hand on her shoulders. "You don't know how much help you've been to us. Want to come with? We could use your help," he said. Alya considered it for a moment before shaking her head.
"I can do even better than that. Give me your number, and I'll see if social media has anything on it," she said, with a smile. Chat nodded and took Alya's phone to type in his number.
"So, where to now?" I asked. The mid day sun was blazing hot now, and I could just imagine how Chat felt in his Noir suit.
"I dunno," he replied, honestly leaking through his voice.
"Well, we have to try something!" The roof top we sat on was a dark gray, soaking in the sunlight and making it warm, but not broiling hot!
"Here, let's move to the shade." Chat pointed to the chimney that spiked up from the dark roof, creating a darker patch of cool roof for us to sit in. I nodded and we stalked to the shade. It felt like sitting under a tree in the summer. The leaves basking in the sunlight and shielding us from its beastly glare.
We sat in silence, watching cars and roll by, watching people walk on the sidewalk.
Chat Noir/Adrien's POV:
My ears burned on the top of my head. God, this suit was good for a bunch of things, but in this heat, it was almost like a death trap! My head hurt like hell, but Y/N looked so at peace in the cool shade... I couldn't make her move just because I was uncomfortable!
I glanced down at my ring. The green pads were starting to disappear... Again.
When Kitten fell asleep next to me, I had been transformed back into Adrien, so I had to leave Y/N for a bit to get Plagg all fed up and rested.
"Something up?" Her voice snuck it's way into my thoughts.
"My right," I pointed to it, "if it runs out of the little green cat pads, I'll transform back into my secret identity."
"Wouldn't want that cat out of the bag, now, would we?" Y/N smiled slyly. My face, besides the heat, was starting to burn a bright red. Cat puns?! That's my thing! I thought.
Y/N started giggling lightly.
"What's s-so funny?" I stuttered, shaking my head.
"Your face! It's completely red," she giggled again. I blinked at her before turning away.
"Sorry," I murmured, embarrassed. It just really tripped me up with the cat puns. Ladybug never laughed at my puns or made them up on her own. I was starting to think that maybe she didn't love me...
What am I thinking!? Of course she does... right? I questioned to myself.
"Did I hurt your feelings?" Y/N's eyes stared into mine, concerned. I shook my head.
"No, it's just that Ladybug never laughs at my cat puns. It's sorta my thing and when you made one up... it just kinda shocked me," I tried sounding reassuring to her.
"I-if you don't want me to do it anymore, I'll just forget about it," she offered.
"You're fine, honestly." I smiled at her. She nodded and I heard my ring beep. "I think I gotta go. Uhm... Yeah. Be right back! Don't fall off the roof," I advised sharply, leaping to my feet and running for somewhere to transform back into Adrien.
Y/N's POV: (REASONABLY SHORT!)
Don't fall off the roof? What does he take me for, some stupid girl? I rolled my eyes and glared in his direction of where he had left. I knew I had to wait, but I was alone. How would I get down if Chat didn't come back? I hugged my knees fearfully, watching the cars vroom by. I really hoped that no one saw me here. They'd think I was crazy.
I sat there in silence, watching time fly by like a bird chasing a butterfly.
Chat Noir/Adrien's POV:
Deep in a dark alley way, I had transformed back into Adrien. "That girl seems really nice. But don't get too attached, pal," Plagg warned, chomping away at the cheese. I glanced out into the sunlit roads where cars zoomed past and people casually walked by.
"Don't worry, Plagg," I said. "I won't. She's not Ladybug." Plagg gave me a 'yeah, right' look with his big green eyes.
"What ever. I'm just giving you advise. You know what could happen if you tell her about me. Not that I wouldn't mind being given some credit," he said before stuffing a bunch of cheese into his mouth. The very thought of eating that stuff was sickening to me. I glanced up at the sky, hoping Kitten was ok.
"I know what you're thinking, kid. She's fine," Plagg said.
"Shut up," I snapped, "we gotta get back to the investigation." With a heavy sigh, Plagg agreed and we were ready to transform again.
"Plagg, claws out!" (A/n: This is not exactly what I'm completely used to saying. I watch the French version mostly with English subtitles.) I said, going through the whole transformation stages. Then I was ready to head back.
Y/N's POV:
I sighed out and felt another violent shake rush through my body. It had been hours since Chat left me and the sun was starting to fade behind the tall buildings of France.
I swallowed and glanced up at the sky. It's light blue gleam was starting to fall away to a shimmering dark blue with white stars. "Please come back...," I whispered. Just as I said that, the tinkling sound of cat claws tapped on the metal roof of the house. Chat?
"Chat Noir?" I called, trying not to let my voice shudder. "I-is that you?"
Two green eyes peered out from behind the chimney and I felt my heart melt at he sight of his blond hair and black suit.
"Did you miss me?" he mewed smiling. I rolled my eyes, my shoulders starting to shake again. Chat stopped and tilted his head to the side. "Oh my God! You're shivering!" He exclaimed, rushing forward on all fours. I shook my head, denying the fact that I was cold. "N-n-no! I'm not..." I said, but found my gaze was searching other places than his. He placed his hand on my shoulder for a moment, then stood up and help out his hand. Shakily, I took his hand and he pulled me up to my feet.
"Come on, I know where we can go," he purred softly with a friendly smile. I nodded and let him wrap his arm around my waist again. Then, pulling out his staff, we lifted into the cold twilight. His body was warm and I slung my arms around his neck, but (obviously) not trying to choke him. I placed my face on his chest and let the wind blow by my cold face, my hair whipping around behind me as I closed my eyes.
The moonlight around us glittered off of Chat's black suit. I felt him carry me bridal style as we plummeted down to the ground. But I was so tired that I didn't open my eyes. Suddenly, we stopped and I felt him walk into a room that was dark, but warm.
"Here, we are, Kitten," he whispered. I nodded, opening my eyes and seeing a dark bedroom with a sofa, flat screen TV, library, and even a rock climbing room. My eyes widened and the room had now caught my full on attention. "You'll stay here tonight," Chat said, setting me on the bed.
"Who's place is this?" I asked.
"Adrien Agreste's. Don't worry. He knows your here already," Chat said, pulling the covers over me. I sat up and stared after him as he walked away to the window we had come in through.
"You're not going to stay?" My heart dropped when he shook his head.
"I have my own mission to take care of. Good night, Kitten." He bowed to me and then he back flipped out the window, into the blackening night.
I sighed and laid down on the bed sheets. The ceiling was high and the there was no sound in the large room. But the night's stars made me feel tired and I drifted back into my sleep.
