Opponents

You sighed heavily and gathered your things. Adrien seemed to think you were annoyed with him because he quickly apologized. You gave him a puzzled look and asked, "What are you talking about?"

"I'm sorry for not running." Adrien rubbed the back of his neck as he pulled his bag over his shoulder. "You know I have all my extra curriculars, and I have other things to do..." he trailed off, not making direct eye contact for a moment.

With a small smile you assured him that there was nothing to worry about, and after giving him a quick hug you both followed the class out to the school court area. They had quickly spread out and gone their seperate ways, but a few stuck around instead of going into the library.

Just a bit ahead of you Marinette had approached Kim with Alya by her side. Kim had been talking to Max with a hushed voice. "So what did Chloé say to you this time? She offered to go on a date with you?" she asked forcefully. She had a nasty sneer on her face with the thought of Chloe.

Kim clenched his jaw and released a slow breath. "No, she threatened to tell everyone I'm afraid of spiders." His lip trembled a bit and his cheeks flushed red from embarrassment. You got closer to them with Adrien right beside you.

Rose came up to Marinette and added, "She told me that if I ran for the election, I'd get kicked out of scrapbooking club, and you know how much I love all those stickers, colorful scraps of papers, and gluing!"

"That's absolutely horrible!" you growled. "Kim, no one would ever judge you for something like that. And Rose! You have every right to be in that club and be happy. In fact, we should have more clubs, and the opportunity to participate in more than one club!"

A few people nodded in agreement, even those not in your class.

"I couldn't care less about being a candidate, and what's your excuse?" Alix told Marinette, crossing her arms and eyeing her sharply. As always, her black hat sat slightly crooked on her wild hair, but her eyes were twice as fierce.

Marinette's cheeks drained of all of their color and she began fluttering her eyelashes nervously. She stared down at her fiddling fingers, taking a step backwards. "Well, uh, um, I'm... really busy!"

Not a single thing crossed your mind about what was filling up her time. Maybe she was spending all of her time cutting out pictures of Adrien to pin on her wall.

"With what? Oversleeping?" Alya teased, poking Marinette's shoulder. She let out a little chuckle.

Marinette bit her bottom lip just as Adrien put his hand on your shoulder. He squeezed it lightly to let you know he wanted to talk to you. "Well, No! But, uh, well, I guess I would run if no one else did," Marinette stuttered just as you left the small crowd forming around her to talk to Adrien.

"What's up?"

Adrien took your hands into his, they were warm, and not as sweaty as they commonly were. "(Y/N), I can make time for you..."

You furrowed your eyebrows. For a split second you had no idea what he was talking about, but then it hit you. Shaking your head, you told him, "Adrien! You don't have to do that." You squeezed his hands tightly and raised them up. "I could never be the deputy this class needed. If you really want to be the class representative, maybe you should ask Nino to run with you."

Adrien pursed his lips. "I don't think I would want Nino to be my running mate. I'm asking you because you are unbelievably kind and smart. I know that whatever we do would turn out perfect- I always know what you're thinking. We're perfect together." His eyes shone brightly, and his cheeks turned light pink. There was a fiery passion in his words and his nose scrunched in determination.

You sighed and nodded. It was possible that your extra time with Chat Noir would be shortened, but you felt a duty to Adrien.

"Oh, and..."

You hummed in response, signaling for him to continue.

"Sometimes I may need to leave for no apparent reason, but... you know how my dad can be."

"That's fine Adrien, so long as you extend me the same courtesy."

"O-of course," he replied, completely shocked by your compliance.

Back in the classroom, when everyone had gotten to their seats Miss. Bustier stood up and addressed the class once again. "So, any new candidates who would like to run against Chloé and Sabrina?"

You looked beside you, at Adrien who seemed to be trying to calm himself down. He was visibly shaking and his breaths were forcefully deep. Was he having a panic attack?

Miss. Bustier sighed, but smiled nonetheless. "Given that Chloé and Sabrina are the only candidates, there's no point in voting. So, Chloé and Sabrina..."

Just as Adrien seemed to have gathered his confidence Marinette jumped from her seat. "I'll run!"

Your teacher's eyes lit up and she quickly went to scribble Marinette's name down on the paper. "Wonderful! You'll need to develop your campaign and have a speech ready by tomorrow. We'll have the vote then."

With a mental push you stood from your seat, slamming your hand on the table and stating that you and Adrien would like to run as partners. All of the chatter in the room quickly died down, until you heard a slick snicker.

It was Chloe. "Miss. Bustier! I don't think this know-nothing should be allowed to run for any sort of office in this class!" she stomped her foot. "Not only does she not know any French at all, but she--"

"Chloe, that's not very nice. Why don't we put it to a vote, then? Since we are learning about democracy." Miss. Bustier took a quick survey of the class. "All in favor of allowing (Y/N) to run for class deputy, raise your hand."

You looked around the room to find that only two people hadn't raised their hands: Chloe and Marinette.

Adrien nudged your shoulder happily, giving you a thumbs up and a wink. "They already love you!"

"Guess we better start working on your speech."

"Win or lose, I'm happy I get to do it with you."
