Chapter Ten
I get tired pretty quickly. Chris reminds me that I've been looking out the window for fifteen minutes and it's starting to freak him out. I chuckle to myself and walk down the hall. Curiosity gets the best of me and I find myself standing in front of Meliah's door. I couldn't hear anyone talking. There doesn't seem to be as much as a sound coming from the room.
I knock a couple times and lean on the door frame, "Meliah?"
After there isn't an answer, I open the door slowly. She looks up at me from a pillow hugged tightly between her thighs and her chest. It is filled with black makeup, which drips from her face. I know instantly what happened.
"Mel..." I rush to her side, closing the door behind me. She starts to sob again, burying her face in the stained pillow. I put my arm around her back and move her closer to me. My heart begins to ache as I listen to her cries. Seeing her so upset brings tears to the corners of my eyes.
She lies her head on my shoulder and sniffles, "I saw it coming. I just didn't think it would be so soon."
I gently rub her back and provide her with comforting phrases my mom used to tell me when I was upset, "I know, it's going to be okay though. It's all over now. You don't have to worry about him anymore."
It doesn't seem to help much, and I don't blame her when she doesn't say anything. I look down to her, "It hurts for a while, but it goes away. You learn to live without that person because you don't need them anymore. You are a better person to others and to yourself," my arm closes tighter around her. I can feel her heart beating madly out of her chest, "I mean, you loved him. You could've had the most handsome guy in the world beg on his knees for you and still you would choose him, because he had your heart. But, listen to me when I say he's not a part of you anymore. Don't worry about him. He'll look for another girl, but I guarantee he won't find anyone else like you. You, on the other hand, will find someone to lift you up on his shoulders and show you to the world. I promise it's going to be okay."
She sniffles and locks eyes with mine. We sit inches apart from each other's faces. For a second, I thought she might lean in closer. How dare I kiss a girl with a newly broken heart?
"That was beautiful," she smiles and wipes her eyes.
"You're welcome," I reach towards the tissue box on her dresser.
"Is this how it's going be? I'll try to repay you for doing something stupid and you end up saving me again?"
"You don't have to repay me for anything," I shake my head. She's already done enough for me.
"Well someone should, it's poetical, the words that flow out of your mouth so smooth," she says and tries to rub the mascara off of her pillow. If I wouldn't have known better, I would think she was flirting with me again.
"Thanks?" I hope is the right answer.
She laughs innocently, "You're welcome."
"Meliah? Where did-?" her mom walks into the room and sees us sitting together on her bed, "Caleb... go..."
"It's Gavin, isn't it?" she balls her hands into fists at her hips.
Meliah nods and grabs onto another tissue from the box. I put my hand on my knees and stare holes into the ground.
"Well, I'm glad you're here to comfort her, Caleb. You're a good friend," her mom says and winks before leaving the room.
I bring my watch in front of my eyes. It's already 9:30. I have to get home. Now.
"Wow, it's late," Meliah's face lights up from her phone screen.
"Yeah, I should get going," my voice falters and I stand up nervously.
"Wait, I'll give you a ride, it's still raining out there," she slides her shoes on.
"No, I can't ask you to do that, not tonight," I wave her offer away and pick up my camera.
"Fine, then don't ask. I'm telling you I'm going to give you a ride home. It's getting late and it's raining so get in my car," she orders and pulls a jacket over her shoulders before leaving her bedroom.
"Yes ma'am," I nod and follow closely behind her.
She drives me all the way home with no problem. It's a pretty quiet ride. She's probably exhausted and upset. I direct her to my house and she drives slowly over the bump in the driveway. I sit, glued to the passenger seat, staring at the house.
"Are you going to go in?" Meliah asks and giggles a little.
"Yeah," I shake my head and force a brief smile onto my lips, "Sorry. I'll see you later."
"Goodnight Caleb," she smiles and waves.
Walking in the house at night is the scariest thing I'll ever have to do. I put my jacket on the rack by the door and scan my eyes around the house. Its pitch black in every direction. Maybe he's not home? He's had late nights before. I walk up the stairs and open the door. My breath catches in my throat and my stomach drops like I'm halted at the top of a rollercoaster.
With my scrapbook labeled Little Mouse, he flips through the pages and chuckles, "This is classic, Caleb. Just classic."
