Chapter 12: The Great Debate
Today, I headed into history with a smile on my face, convinced that Dio was not like the other guys. I don't think anyone has ever apologized to me like that, especially not a boy, and especially not after I basically chewed their head off. I mean, it's not like I intend to be mean, but it's a defense mechanism that works so.....
Back to the subject at hand ( see what I did there? More terrible puns), ass I walked into history, Dio suddenly pulled me aside and said that he was going on that week long field trip and asked if I was going. I of course replied in the negative and said that it seems like a colossal waste of time for someone who knows exactly where they want to go to college. He of course complained that I was no fun and that I need to lighten up a little. That made roll my eyes.
Really? Last time I checked, girls who "lighten up a little " end up pregnant or dead. Both scenarios I would like to avoid at the present time.
The bell rang and I took my seat, not doing my morning ritual with Jenny for the first time, pretty much ever. I looked over at her guiltily and decided that I would do it from across the room. However, she decided not to play along and ignored the sh!t out of me. I frowned and suddenly felt watched. I looked around but there was no one. I decided to simply shrug it off as nerves and continue about my day.
For today's lesson, we debated the usage of mtraditionally offensive terms and the whether it was okay to use them in today's society.
Being a jock, he argued that it was totally fine for African Americans to refer to each other as the n-word. He also thought that it was okay to call people faggot because they were just "playing around " . I raised my hand and argued that both statements are false because one, the n-word is and always will be an insult and that no one should disrespect the rights that African Americans are still fighting for. As far as just "playing around " goes, it's still hurtful. Jokingly or not, calling someone a derogatory name is still rude, and makes the other person feel bad. Just because they don't show it doesn't mean they aren't hurt. After about an hour of debating, he reluctantly saw my side of things and I felt a weird vibe of adrenaline.
