Chapter 7: All Is Fair In Fighting, Except Weapons or Besides She's Mine

December’s Pov.
When Hunter left I was alone again. I didn’t know if he would be back or if I was going to be alone for the rest of the day. That’s the thing with Hunter, I’ll never know with him. Everything is a mystery whether I want it to be or not. I don’t even know why I want him around. Maybe he makes me feel like I’m not alone in this world. Maybe he’s just as lonely as I am.
I sat there in my room till I finally got bored enough that I decided I was going to leave. My parents left a car for me to use whenever I wanted to. But I was the type that was okay with walking. Walking was okay with me. I was fine with nature, I didn’t like to be out there too much, but I was okay with it. I walked out of my house closing the big brown front door, and the glass screen door.
I looked up at my medium sized beige house for a minute, trying to figure how Hunter got in. It was a cookie cutter home, meaning it looked like every other house on the block except it was a light brown. And most were gray, yellow, light green, and a peachy color.
I opened my garage and pulled the silver cobalt we had in there out. I began to drive to the park that was a couple of blocks away. I could have just walked but I wanted to get there quickly to free my mind.
I wanted to stop all of my roaming thoughts of Hunter and his pink lips, and nice physique, and his dreamy caramel like eyes. Though he was just an annoyance, I had to admit he was hot. He wasn’t the type to stick to one girl, but you never heard of him having multiple relationships either, just short, -fuck buddies- are what they call them. I mean it makes sense when you think about the fact that sex is the only thing on his mind 24-7.
Hunter’s childhood was probably completely different from my by a lot. I was raised with my two parents as an only child. We have relatives but they didn’t come around often, only on some occasions. They’ll probably come around for my graduation though... I was raised in the same house, Anna as my best friend, all my life. Never really looked for change or really needed it until now. Maybe Hunter was right, maybe I was going through a rebellious stage late in my adolescence.
I pushed on the gas past the park heading to the nearby Coffee shop owned by Colton Inc. They had literally the best drinks in the California. They say that Mrs. Colton actually works there all the time. I never actually seen her but I'm sure she's there often.
I pulled my seat belt off and got out of the car making sure to lock it. I walked around from the side of the building where the parking lot was and to the front. I pulled open the door hearing the familiar chime of the bell above it. It smelled like freshly baked pastries and coffee. The smell was mouth watering. I looked around a lot of people were here since it was just about the night rush. Every table was packed other than the small table for two off to the side of the store. It was in the corner but right next to a window that I loved to look out of and watch the nightlife of L.A.
I remembered I couldn't get in for the first couple of months because it was filled with celebrities and paparazzi. All the top social networking sites talked about this place. But it makes sense to be packed since it’s the only one in existence.
I ordered my hot cocoa and sat at my table to wait. A blonde guy about 23 walked in the door with a smile that could make anyone melt. He just seemed like a fun person. A girl walked in right behind him holding his hand. She was a Latina with dark brown curls that went down her back. They looked like a picture perfect couple.
People like them were meant to be together. People like Hunter and I weren’t. We were too different. I'm quiet, he's loud. I keep things to myself; he's honest about what he's thinking.
I looked away from the beautiful couple to glance out the window. I saw someone who I swear looks like Tristan walking with another guy with a mop of dark curly brown hair on his head. I squinted a little more and the Tristan-lookalike flip his blond hair out of his face and I could tell that was most definitely the real him. But who was the guy next to him?
The boy I ordered my drink from sat my hot cocoa on my table, so I turned away for a second to thank him, and when I look back they were gone. Where could they have gone that fast? Hunter wasn’t there, and I don’t think Tristan likes me very much from the short period of time I was with him; although he was sleepy. So I couldn’t ask. It wasn’t my business anyway, but I couldn’t help but be a little nosy.
When I looked back up, the guy was still there. He had a short buzzed haircut and one of those ‘bad boy’ smiles. His nametag read ‘Jeremy’. I gave him a small appreciative smile, because he didn’t have to bring my cup over. Honestly I don’t know why he was still here.
“So, what’s your name?” He asked looking into my eyes. His eyes were a blue-greenish color and he had one of those comfortable with himself vibes to him. I opened my mouth but nothing came out. Honestly I didn’t expect him to ask me that. I mean I’m not ugly but I was just caught off guard.
“I’m Dece-December.” I held out my hand to shake his and he took into his bigger one and softly placed a kiss onto it. I could feel my eyes widen.
“I’m Jeremy; it’s nice to see such a beautiful face at this time of the day.” If his words were any sweeter I would get a cavity right now. But I could tell that line from anywhere. It sounded like something Hunter would say.
“Jeremy stop harassing that girl and get back to work,” laughed the Hispanic girl, while the blond guy just laughed.
“Hope to continue seeing you around beautiful” He shot me a wink and started to back up; when he did he bumped into a calculating Hunter.
The new guy, Jeremy beamed a wide 400 watt smile at Hunter which made Hunter’s mouth twitch up at the side a bit till it turned into a smile.
“Hunt, it’s been so long. Where’ve you been?” Jeremy gave him the man hug thing and stepped back.
“Staying low, her Uncle wants to put me in jail for just being myself.” When Hunter said ‘her uncle’ he flicked his head in my direction.
I could see Jeremy’s eyes light up in distaste. “Oh,” he replied.
“Besides, she’s mine. I would have to fight you and you don’t want that again.” Hunter told him his hazel eyes glowing with excitement. But I wasn’t his. There was no need for that. Besides Jeremy wasn’t even my type. Did I even have a type?
“That was one time, and I was drunk! You cheated!” Jeremy laughed one dimple on his left cheek showing.
“You know our rules. All is fair in fighting, except weapons.” Jeremy glared at him before returning to his post in the back of the counter. I looked back up and there was Hunter, smiling down at me with all his teeth showing. His outfit changed from earlier. He was now wearing an all black ensemble; it looked like it was meant to be stealthy, secretive. He even had on those black thief gloves. Or maybe I just watch too many movies.
He took a seat next to me waiting for me to say something. I narrowed my eyes and said “Hunter, I’m not yours. But that’s beside the point. How did you find me? Are you stalking me?”
He shrugged and peaked out the window. “I found you by complete coincidence actually. I did stop by your house but I didn’t see you there.”
“Hunter that’s creepy.” In a weird kind of way it was flattering, but I had to enforce my plans.
“Nah, I just like spending time with you, Cember.” There he goes saying my name like that again. It brought a weird excitement feeling for some odd reason.
“You just want to sleep with me Hunter. Which isn’t going to happen” I told him pointedly.
“For now, but that’s beside the point. What are you doing here?” He relaxed into his seat, as another person walked into the shop wafting Hunter’s scent to my nose. He smelled drool worthy, to die for. His cologne was enough to make you want to be like the Axe or detergent commercials and go sniff him.
“I was bored at home so I decided to come here to have so cocoa. And wait, I saw Tristan and some dude with brown curly hair, but not you.” His smiled spread across his face, like warm butter on toast.
“So you were checking for me?” I glared at him and he continued, “Well I was there.” He reply was too simple for me and did sate my curiosity. I grabbed his hand to gain his attention that once again went out the window. He looked down at our hands and a smiled like the cat on Alice in Wonderland.
“Hunter,” I whined. “What were you guys doing?” His eyes narrowed at me for a second. Not in a rude way, but in an analyzing way.
“Just hanging out, nothing big. My friend just got into town. But you should tell me more about you; I mean we are going to be spending a lot of time together.”
“I’ve known about you since I was in 7th grade Hunter, I know what kind of person you are.”
“No, you know what I’ve done. Not who I am.” Honestly that response got to me. I really didn’t know Hunter. All I knew was that he definitely was a player type and that he did bad things. I didn’t know what kind of person he was. And if this ‘friendship’ and I use that term loosely, is suppose to work then I’m going to have to learn him, and trust him somewhat.
“Then who are you Hunter?” I asked looking him in the eyes. I didn’t realize that I didn’t remove my hand from his.
“Do you really want to know, Cember?” It brought that same shiver down my virgin bones. I don’t know what those shivers were about; I only got them with Hunter. But I needed to get them under control. They made me feel a way that I've never really felt before.
But did I really want to know? I mean I know I was digging myself into a deeper friendship with Hunter, but I think it was worth it. I needed to experience life for myself, even if it’s with the very someone I was told to stay away from.
“Yes.” I replied, short and simple.
“Okay then.”
“You two have been holding hands for like the twenty minutes you’ve been here. I guess she is really yours.” Jeremy said abruptly causing me to rip my hand out of Hunter, to which he shrugged and grabbed the drink from Jeremy’s hands.
“I’m not his. I’m just a friend.” I scolded.
“Hmm, feisty I like it. So the cop’s niece, Hunter? That’s a little sketchy.”
“For the record I met her way before I knew about her Uncle. Since 7th grade, and I didn’t know they were related until like a week or two ago. This is all just a strange occurrence of events, honestly.” He answered sipping on his drink.
“Interesting. What about—” Hunter gave him a pointed look that cut off whatever he was about to say because then it got really quiet. “Oh, well I got to go. The sis will have a fit if I don’t make you two get out, and I don’t close up on time.” He whistled, walking away to grab a rag and start wiping down tables.
I got up and strolled out the door, Hunter on my heels. I got into the car and Hunter followed on the passenger’s side. “Is it really safe for you to be riding with me? My uncle—” I started but he cut me off.
“—Who, I’m not scared of, or going to let catch me right now, will be fine. Besides, we have school tomorrow.” He leaned his seat back and closed his eyes.
“Then shouldn’t you be going home? And uhm, I recommend you putting on your seatbelt.” I said the last part quietly. He looked at me strangely before buckling his seatbelt.
“Nah, I’m gonna crash on your couch. Your uncle doesn’t have a key does he? And why do I have to buckle my seatbelt?”
“Yes he has a key, but he hardly uses it. He just drives by at night, never comes in. Whoa wait, you can’t stay at my house Hunter. What if he comes in, in the morning? The couch is terrible for you back, and I can’t let a guy, let alone you, stay at my house.” I started to ramble and he just stared at me with a calm face till I was out of breath and panting for air.
“Chill out, August. He won’t catch me, and I need a place to crash. Please? You’ve been at least seeing me and knowing little things about me, for about a month or two now. I’m not going to be in your room just on the couch.” I have to admit the pleading was very attractive and everyone knows I wanted to say ‘no’ but I couldn’t.
“Okay Hunter, but be careful. Don’t come to my room unless invited and make sure my Uncle doesn’t see you leaving or coming in. You got that?” I warned putting my index finger in his face.
“You might invite me into your room?”
“You’re unbelievable.” I rolled my eyes and started to drive.
Driving was not my strong point, I could be as smart as I wanted to be but I couldn’t drive that great for the life of me. Maybe I was being the stereotypical woman, but I could not drive.
We came to a stop light, which was about halfway to home and I dared to glance over at Hunter. His mouth was wide open staring at me in disbelief. “Are you being serious?” I looked down but nodded. “At this rate will never get to your house without getting pulled over. And with your Uncles creepy track record, and my bad luck when it comes to him, it’ll be him that pulls us over. Climb over let me drive.”
“How’s that going to work Hunter? I would climb over into your seat and it would be just an awkward position.”
“Just do it.” He said impatiently, waving his hands over.
I put the gear into park and climb over the *prndl and into Hunter’s lap. We were in a weird position but luckily he didn’t try anything. He just placed me next to him and climbed into the driver’s seat. We got to my home in less the time it would’ve taken us if I drove.
Once we pulled up into my driveway, I felt a lot of nervousness about letting Hunter stay with me in the house. I mean in a way it did make me feel safe, but then again I was with a guy that didn’t have the best record.
“Listen here December; I will never intentionally hurt you. So you have nothing to worry about, trust me.” That first sentence, how it was said contrasted greatly from his last sentence that sounded carefree. The first one was the most serious I’ve ever seen Hunter plus he used my real name which I don’t think he’s did since I met him.
I was being one of those dumb girls in the movie, but I was going to trust him this time. He’s never done anything to show me he was trustworthy. Even when I heard about all the bad things he’s done, none of them ever had to do with forcing a girl, or telling on others, or anything of that nature.
I’m always so cautious with my decisions, but this time I’m going to allow my gut to decide, and it was going to allow him to stay.
“I have three questions before I let you stay.”
“Okay but I get to answer them how I want to.” I wanted to say no, but he is the one answering the questions.
“Why do you want to be around boring o’l me?” It was a question that has been on my mind for months. What could it possibly be that makes me interesting?
“You’re different.” That’s all I got, that meant I would probably have to wait to get that answer.
“Are you a bad person?” I know I could’ve asked something else, but I know that I wasn’t going to get a solid answer; it was going to be the same as the other question, simple and tells me nothing I want to know.
“In time, I let you be the one to decide.” Cryptic but an answer, one that I was definitely going be the one to answer in due time.
“Last one, who was that guy with the curly hair with Tristan today? How do you know that Jeremy guy?” That was two questions but they kind of go together so I hoped he would just answer them.
I'm thinking it over, the way you make me feel all sexy but it's causing me shame.I wanna lean on your shoulder, I wish I was allowed but I don't wanna cause any pain. And if I'm feeling like I'm evil, we've got nothing to gain.-BANKS, Waiting Game
