Chapter 8

'You were being tracked?' Evan slammed his fist on the metallic table. We were once again in the 'Secret room' The room where we had concocted the plan to trick the Liberals. They had bought the bait. The fake documents I had given them would lead them to another dead route. They wanted their system. They wanted control. Evan would never let that happen.

It was at that moment that I noticed the dark eye bags under his eyes. Did he not sleep at all? 'Evan we'll figure it out tomorrow you need to sleep and to be quite frank I'm exhausted.' I said whilst sliding a hand through my hair frustratingly.

'No we can't fucking go to sleep! They know where our base is.' He sat down and slumped on his chair.

'Well they want the SYTM code right?'

'Yes that code is the whole structure of our organisation.'

I bent down looking at him straight in his dark eyes.

'Well? Who knows about it?'

'Everyone knows about it but no one knows what it contains, it's really advanced security programs and the blockchain is constantly growing making it nearly it impossible to break through.'

He abruptly stood up and went to the closet.

'Evan, what are you'

He cut me off,

'We'll take off your tracker, they haven't attacked yet and they know where we are meaning they are waiting for something. They don't know we know, let's use it to our advantage.' He said rummaging through the shelves. Coming back over to my side, I drew a quick breath in as I felt his rough, gentle hand take a hold of my arm. My heart started beating frantically.

Gosh, why was I reacting like that?

He took out a metal looking device and placed it over my arm.

It started glowing. Was this going to take out the tracker?

'It should be located somewhere here if I'm not wrong.' Evan muttered concentration etched on every part of his face.

Sure enough, the machine started beeping. My eyes opened wide as he took out a scalpel.

'This is going to hurt Ria. Ready? 3,2,1'

He cut through my flesh, pulled out the tracker and closed up the wound.

My arm was throbbing but it was necessary. Just suck it up Ria.

The tracker was a small little thing. I could see why it would go unnoticed. We placed in a box for 'safekeeping'.

As we left and closed the room, I handed the keys back to Evan. We wordlessly walked side by side down the silent corridor. Our hands were almost touching. Keyword, almost.

Instead of taking the right turn that led towards the dorms we took a left.

'Evan, the dorms are--'

'I know where the dorms are Ria.' He stated. The silence was coming down on us again but I was having none of it.

'Where are we going then, Evan?' I whispered sarcastically

'My room.'

'Your room?' I almost choked. Multiple scenarios were going through my head.

I scolded myself mentally. I looked like his missing fiancé, of course he wouldn't like me in that way! I suddenly wish I had met Lucy. How was Evan before he had lost her? Did he look at her like the only thing that mattered in this world? I felt jealous. I had no right to, but I did.

'Ria? We're going there because all of your roommates would wonder where you have been so late after the curfew,' he gave me a quick glance, 'We wouldn't want to raise suspicion.'

Those words made my stomach heavy and my throat dry but I managed to croak out

'Yeah'

His room was isolated from the rest of the dorm compounds, yet close to his office. Walking in, I noticed how impeccable the room was tidied. It wasn't big but the size was decent enough to sleep comfortably.

Evan took his gun out and took off his shirt. Feeling heat rush to my face I closed my eyes, I had seen his six-pack, no, eight-pack!

I heard a throaty laugh and felt clothes on my face.

Evan had thrown a shirt and boxers.

'You can wear that, I don't have anything else.' There was a hint of a smile on his face. He just made me feel like mush. So I rushed to the bathroom to get away from his stare and half naked-state.
The chuckle could be heard again. His laugh was a like a soft tune, one I would like to play over and over. Instead, I just memorised it to my best ability. I changed and when I walked out, the ghost smile on Evan's face had disappeared.

'What's wrong?', I asked softly.

'Noth-', I glared at him.

'You just look so much like her.' I went up to him and placed my hand on his defined jaw.

His eyes were now glossed over and without hesitating, I placed my arms around him and embraced him.

The hug lasted a long time until he pulled away.

'Thanks.' He said softly whilst pushing a strand of my hair out of the way.

As if a switch had been switched, his hands fell limp, close to his body.

'I'll take the couch, you take the bed.'

I shook my head, 'There's really no need. I'll take the couch.'

He sighed, 'Ria, don't make this difficult.'

'Look you had a rough week and you have a rough week ahead, you need to sleep.'

Without a word, he turned the lights off and lifted me off the ground.

I shrieked,'Put me down Evan!'

He did, but by doing so he placed me on one side of the bed.

'Goodnight Ria.' Those were the last words I heard before I felt the bed dip to the side. He had listened and compromised.

I fell asleep with everything but a frown on my face.
