Chapter 1

I did not know what was happening but I knew one thing for sure, I was cold. I had no control over my shivering body as it started jolting, as I tried to open my eyes in vain. Powerless and at the mercy of the world's harmful conditions, I slipped in and out of consciousness for what seemed like an eternity until I heard a voice. I could not make out what that voice was saying but it seemed to be panicking. A man, yes that voice belonged to a man. He was barking orders out as many rushed movements and voices arrived; hoisting me off the hard ground. Not knowing to whom those voices belonged to frightened me but I knew that they had managed to warm my frigid body. That and I was too tired to care.

I creeped around the corner and went behind the guard's back choking him till he was unable to move, feeling a wave of relief as I knew the mission had gone according to plan. I was wrong. The guard had set of a bomb. With the little energy I had left I started sprinting out of the building as the countdown could 'beep' be 'beep' heard. 'beep' 'beep' 'beep' 'beep'

'I think she is waking up.' a rough voice announced. 'beep'                                                                  Feeling slightly groggy, I slowly opened my eyes and met two intimidating men face to face. I shrieked and punched the closest guy in the jaw. 'beep'                                                                                    

'Damn girl, that hurt!' he exclaimed whilst rubbing the area I had just hit.

The other man approached me with precaution. 'beep'

'Lucy, don't punch us you were found in the street. You're safe.' 'beep'

I waited a while to steady my breathing and managed to calm myself before I opened my mouth.

'Who's Lucy?' 'beep' 'beep'

The men looked at each other before the first guy asked,

'What do you mean? You're Lucy!'

I was getting frustrated. 'beep'

'You must have the wrong girl, my name's Ria not Lucy,' I looked at both of them directly in the eyes, 'can I you tell me your names though?'

The first guy smiled,

'I'm Keith. Please don't hit me!'

I laughed and wheezed out. 'beep' 'beep' 'beep'

'Sorry it was a reflex, I guess!'

The other man just stood there with an amused look in his eyes and spoke up. 'beep'

'I'm Evan.'

Keith looked well built but could not compare to Evan. He was slightly smaller and paler. Whilst Evan was strong and tall. His arms were filled with tattoos and his hair was a dark shade of brown. Evan really was a handsome guy as you could almost sense dominance radiating off of him.

The laughter got quiet and you could almost hear a pin drop. Almost. 'beep'

'What is that noise?' I asked.

'The beeping sound? That's the heart monitor, we can turn it off if you would like.' Keith proposed.

'Yes please.' I said as soon as the words came out of his mouth.

'If you are not Lucy, where is she? You two look so alike.' Evan pressured in a dark manner and proceeded to show me Lucy's picture.

'We don't just look alike! Evan, she could almost be my twin or something!'

'She may be your doppelganger.' suggested Keith.

'Maybe, but who's Lucy?' I asked curiosity laced into my voice.

Both of them looked uncomfortable until Evan spoke up.

'Look we have to go. Don't worry about the hospital bill. It's on me.'

Evan reached down and grabbed his bag. Not another word was said whilst he and Keith left the hospital room.

The room was bare. Everything was white and I hated it. The walls were closing in on me making my heart pound on my chest begging to be set free. My hands were moist and it felt as though someone had put the heating to a maximum setting. It was to concentrate and my vision was becoming clouded. Why was I here? What was I doing on that road?

'Miss I believe the young man just payed for two days do you-- miss are you okay?' the nurse ran over to my side and called in a doctor.

'She's having a panic attack!'

'We need to lower her heart rate!'

The nurse looked at me and started talking in indistinctive words.

'Sweety you need... deep ... breath... out...in... look...me...slowly'

'It's working!'

I don't know how long it took for me to calm down but when I did I realized something;

I didn't know who I was.

The nurse came back in a few hours later with food.

'Mam' I don't remember anything about myself!' I said in a low voice.

'Can you think of any relatives or friends that might be looking for you?' She asked as she placed the tray on the white bedside table. Dispersing a motherly aura which made me feel secure.

'I can't remember anything that happened before I was brought into the hospital by Keith and Evan.'
She came to my side of the bed putting an arm around me in a comforting manner.

'Yes they make quite the impression don't you think? Are they your friends?' she chuckled slightly.

'I don't think we had met before. They thought I was someone else.'

'Well these young lads paid for your stay. You have two days to recover and then we have to free your room up. There are many emergencies and the hospital is always full. You know how the city is like. Crime has never been so high!' she ranted in despair. I looked at her name tag: Beatrice.

'What crimes?' I asked.

'Ever since Mrs Aspeg overpowered her advisors, she has been leading the country on her own. The world is becoming worse by the minute and overpopulation has taken a toll on our country. Many citizens are so desperate they become inhuman,' She looked at me with a tinge of worry present in her eyes. 'I'm sorry I don't want to worry you dear!' She abruptly stood up and went to shut the curtains as she whispered in a hushed tone.

'Don't forget to rest.'

Beatrice never came back. Instead another nurse came in and unlike Beatrice she was unwelcoming, literally pushing me out the door after my time was up.

I did not know what to do now that I was alone with barely a name to cling onto.
