Chapter 7: The Untaming of Wyatt Halliwell
Drake
Drake had major reservations about moving in with Chris and Wyatt, but it has been almost painless. Yes, the two have a habit of leaving their dirty clothes, mostly workout gear, on the washer instead of washing them but it was a small price to pay for being in their company. None of their quirks are enough to cause him distress. Well, not yet.
The smell of coffee rouses Drake awake. He fully dresses before walking out into the kitchen.
The kitchen is decorated in pastel blues and yellows. For some reason, it fits the Halliwells. The counters are pastel blue with clean white tops. The fridge is a sleek white smart fridge with lettered magnets attached to its doors. Each one of us has a letter. The island counter matches the aesthetic of the room as well as the cabinets.
As he turns the corner to enter the kitchen, someone is standing in front of the out of place black and silver coffee machine. Wyatt is pouring coffee into a mug. To Drake's utter shock, Wyatt is naked from the waist up, with only a cerulean armband tied to his large bicep.
Bags from the delicatessen down the street stand tall on the island.
Chris drinks a cup of coffee as he eats a cinnamon pastry. He nods to Drake as Drake passes him. Drake squeezes past Wyatt and pours a cup of coffee. As he turns, Wyatt holds out the vanilla creamer. A smile and a thanks follow as Wyatt pours the creamer into Drake's mug. Wyatt walks around the island and takes a seat next to Chris.
"Sleep well?" Chris asks.
"Unless you know something I don't." Drake leans against the counter. "What about you guys?"
"I got called out this morning and decided to go running. I figured I'd stop and get breakfast." Wyatt says.
"Thanks again. We appreciate it." Drake says. "What about you, Chris?"
"Great, actually! For the first time, I think I'm back on a solid schedule."
"So," Drake stirs his coffee with a silver spoon, "have you talked to Bianca?"
Chris squirms at hearing her name. "She is, rightfully, avoiding all my calls and texts." He says.
"Honestly, we both know I have never liked her. Maybe this is a good thing. You can go out and date and be an actual young adult."
"We're all in our thirties." Wyatt interjects.
"You're older than us, old man. We're hitting our prime."
"Ah How dare I." Wyatt smiles. "Maybe Chris doesn't want to go out and date. Maybe he wants to be with Bianca because Bianca is who he loves."
"Maybe Chris can speak for himself." Chris says as he pushes off the bar stool. "And he probably needs to get to work. Have a good day, guys."
Chris immediately orbs away, leaving Wyatt and Drake to stare at the space where he stood. Wyatt pauses in the middle of taking a bite from a cream-filled donut when Drake's eyes narrow on him. Wyatt groans as he places the pastry on a paper towel, clearly frustrated.
"Why are you pushing him? He's not ready." Wyatt says. "Chris is like a clam. The more you push him, the more he clams up."
"Thus a clam?"
"Are you pushing him or yourself?" Wyatt asks.
"I don't like your tone. What are you inferring, Halliwell?"
"Maybe you're projecting your feelings about something else onto him."
"And here we go. Why does it always come to me or us?" Drake leans over to pinch Wyatt's bicep. Wyatt lets out a yelp as Drake snatches his donut. "Chris is a tough nut to crack. But we need to crack his nut."
Wyatt's eyebrows raise higher than normal as a smirk stretches across his face.
"Grow up! You know what I mean, you big weirdo." Drake says. "I'm worried about him. He's been diving headfirst into anything other than dealing with his problems. A Halliwell thing. I think it's a good thing he keeps busy, but I also think he needs stimulation. He needs something solid to focus his attention on. A person. People, Hell, I don't know."
"He's living with two people right now."
"Wyatt!"
"I get what you're saying but we can't micromanage people."
"Piper does."
"Yeah, well, she's far better at it." Wyatt laughs. "Look, I'll talk to him. I'm not saying I'm going to push him into the arms of some waiting damsel, but you make valid points."
"Duh! I'm usually right about these things." Wyatt stares longingly at Drake until Drake becomes aware. Wyatt looks down when he realizes he has been caught and Drake laughs. "I thought we agreed not to make this weird."
"We never really talked about you healing me." Wyatt says as he pushes away from his seat. "Don't you think that deserves a discussion?"
Drake leans back to an upright position. "Another thing we disagree on. If you want to have a conversation about it, I'd rather you wear clothes. And not be sweaty."
"We have our best conversations when I'm shirtless and sweaty."
Warmth. The warmth runs down Drake's spin, making him shift to distribute some of the heat to different areas of his body. Wyatt enjoys the sight of his discomfort. Their interaction reminds both how close they can come to falling back into old habits. Wyatt's newfound confidences makes him almost irresistible to Drake. Drake finds it increasingly harder to remember why he's trying to put distance between them.
"I—I'm late. For work. Look, we can have all the discussion you want, but right now, I'm incredibly late."
"How about dinner? You get off at five, right?" Wyatt asks.
Drake shifts his weight again, nervously. "I'm actually have dinner with Rob. He's a friend of Caleb's from college."
Wyatt nods, barely able to hide his displeasure. Right. Cool. Having dinner with...a friend. Of Caleb's."
"It's not what you're thinking. Rob is just a friend. If Caleb thought I had the faintest of a thing with Rob, he'd kill us both." Drake laughs. Wyatt regards him with confusion. "Wow, your jealousy is really easy to see in this light."
"I'm not jealous."
"Yeah? Well, if it doesn't bother you, I should go ahead and look into that speed dating thing Phoebe told me about."
"Speed dating? Aunt Phoebe suggested you do speed dating?" Wyatt asks.
"Oh yeah," I lie, "she thinks it'll help me move on from...people."
"Right. I'm going to go or I'll be late."
His tone has devolved into a less confident, more perturbed one. Drake realizes the joke has gone too far when Wyatt blows past him, mumbling he should get some sleep.
"Well, shit." Drake says to himself.
Wyatt
The conversation with Drake sent shockwaves through Wyatt's entire nervous system.
Wyatt could feel the anger coursing through his body. As irrational as he knows it is, the implication of Phoebe, the love doctor herself, setting Drake up with another guy causes a level of jealousy he has not felt with any other relationship in his life. Drake is not just another guy; no guy will ever live up to him.
Wyatt's love life has been filled with misfires. Guys, and girls, fawn over him. Wyatt has never had a shortage of admirers nor has he ever had trouble finding romance. His issue is keeping it. His Twice-Blessed Destiny takes enough of a toll on his life and relationships, without the added variable of Drake. Wyatt's hopes have always been for Drake to re-enter his life. Now that he has, no one else is on his radar.
As distant as Wyatt has been in relationships, there has only been one person who has ever broken up with him first. There is only one man who is immune to his charm. Drake's ability to see past the Halliwell charm proves how unique he is. Wyatt has known since they were teenagers that Drake is the love of his life. Since the moment they met, even. The first time he realized he was overly attached to Drake was when he asked his mother for a locket to give to Drake on his tenth birthday.
The pull between them was always there and always strong. When they finally confessed their true feelings, it was perfect. It was magic. The only thing that was able to separate them was the Summers family baggage. Wyatt's frustration with Drake's unwillingness to see how powerful and good he is only intensifies the more Drake resists how Wyatt knows he feels. Drake's feeling of inferiority to their family, to him, is disturbing to Wyatt.
If only he could see himself as Wyatt does.
Wyatt's jealous, irrational feelings lead him to orb into the Bay Mirror. He is careful not to be seen by Drake as he heads to Phoebe's office. Phoebe is showing two men out of her office as she waves him in with a hug. Phoebe smiles warmly as she heads around the desk and Wyatt shuts the door behind him.
"Hey! To what do I owe this surprise?" Phoebe asks. A wave of annoyance, anger and jealousy washes over her, causing her to shiver. "Oh."
"Sorry, Auntie."
"Wyatt, you're feeling a lot of things. Is that jealousy?"
"Well, yeah, that's what happens when you set my—Drake up on speed dates."
Phoebe laughs. "What? I would never set him up on a date. I know how you feel about him, and how he feels about you."
"Dammit! He's so frustrating."
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, everyone is team Dryatt."
"Everyone but—wait, did you just say Dryatt?"
"That's what we all call you when you're not around." Phoebe says.
"I don't hate it, surprisingly."
"I can understand your frustration. You just need to give him time." Phoebe says. "I get it, trust me. He's going to come around. Look at me. I was unlucky in love more than once.
"I remember the stories."
"But it all worked out when I stopped trying to force it. I did the same thing with Coop that he is doing with you. I shut down, and it took Coop's patience to allow me to open myself up to him. The two of you have been sweet on each other for as long as I can remember." Phoebe exhales. "He's got deep scars, Wyatt. His time away did wonders but you've got to understand that being back here, it opens a lot of things that never really healed."
"I know his history." Wyatt sighs.
"But you have to understand it. And honor it."
"So, how do I help him get there quicker? It's way harder to live with him than I thought. Ever since he healed me, I've felt more connected to him than ever." Wyatt says. "Mom and Dad only got to that point when they truly admitted their love to each other. Auntie Paige, too."
"Yeah, that was special."
"What am I supposed to do?" Wyatt asks.
Phoebe watches her nephew for a moment. His pain is overwhelming. Phoebe made a promise to stay out of their relationship. It was mutually decided not to interfere with their relationship, but Phoebe's uncanny ability to disregard the rules of love make it nearly impossible for her to sit idly while Wyatt and Drake are in so much pain.
Phoebe walks to Wyatt. "Well, Wyatt, maybe it's time that you stop being a pacifist. Normally, I'd tell you to just let love find its way. Maybe it's time you make your move."
"Right. Right! You're absolutely right." He nods and kisses Phoebe's cheek. "Thank you!"
"Of course! Any time, sweetie."
Wyatt beams at her as he orbs away. Phoebe sighs to herself, wondering how she'll break the news to her sisters.
