Details:      Given to Melinda Warren as a gift by her lover, the warlock Matthew Tate. Once Matthew had copied Melinda's powers he outed her as a witch to the Salem authorities, condemning her to death. 

But Melinda got her own back by cursing Matthew with her "Warlock Curse" that would draw him into the locket for eternity. The locket would not be able to opened ever again unless by a descendant of Melinda Warren. 

300 years later, Prue Halliwell accidentally opened the locket and freed Matthew Tate but was able to curse him again thanks to the aid of Melinda Warren, who was brought back specifically to curse Matthew by Prue and her sisters. 

Matthew Tate was once again trapped within the Pewter Heart locket and when Melinda returned to the afterlife she took the locket with her so that she could safeguard it and prevent any of her descendants from ever opening it again.
