Chapter 52
The next couple of days were rough. I slept a lot, and I was thankful for my mother's presence since she was the only one there to keep my company during the day. I breezed through the homework the school sent for me within the first two days so I was able to spend plenty of time with my guitar. The Cullens rotated through who accompanied Emmett after school. Most the time AJ would join him at least for a little bit. Rosalie or Alice was almost always there too because they were the two who would help me bathe.
The night before I was due back at school, Emmett and I finally got some alone time. Dad and Bella were taking mom into Seattle to catch a flight because something weird was going on with the Port Angeles airport. I didn't really care because it meant Emmett and I got to be alone.
"How're ya feeling?" He asked. He was sitting on the hospital bed with me and there were some reruns of some show from the 80s on TV.
"Nervous," I said. "School tomorrow is going to be rough."
"I know baby," he said. He kissed my head as he held me, my eyes not leaving the TV for fear that I would break down the second we made eye contact. Thinking about having to face school in a wheelchair is enough to cause a nervous breakdown.
"I'm also really thankful for you and your family," I said. "Everything you've done for me has been amazing and so much more than I could have asked for."
"That's because you're a part of this family too," he said. "Maybe not officially a Cullen or a vampire, but you're one of us."
I blushed as he kissed my cheek. He froze, something most people wouldn't have even noticed.
"You okay?" I asked as I moved away from him. I turned to face him, putting a couple feet of space between us. He nodded, his eyes closed. I stared at him for a few second before he opened his eyes. They were a few shades darker than moments before.
"I'm okay babe," he said. "Just had to regain my composure." He flashed the brightest smile and I rolled my eyes.
"When was the last time you hunted?" I asked.
"Few nights ago," he said. "I'll go again tonight."
"Promise?" I asked. He nodded and I stuck out my pinky.
"Really promise," I said.
"Are you five?" He asked, chuckling as he interlocked our pinkys.
I nodded and he chuckled some more, a smile growing on my face. He opened his arms again, signaling he was calmed down enough to hold me.
I laid back into his arms and relaxed against his stone cold body.
"Damn fucking muscles," I grumbled. "Feel like laying on granite."
"I can leave," he joked.
"Not what I was saying," I said.
"I know baby," he said. "Someday we'll be the same temperature and I won't feel ice cold to you anymore."
I nodded, longing for that day.
"Why don't you get some rest," he suggested. "I'll wake you up when Esme drops off dinner in an hour."
"I suppose," I tried to fake like I was angry and I didn't want to sleep. He knew me too well though and he just hummed gently, some song I didn't know, instantly relaxing me.
"I love you Em," I said.
"I love you too baby," he said, kissing my head as I snuggled into my blankets and closed my eyes, feeling instantly more tired. Within seconds I was napping in the arms of the love of my life.
