Chapter 17
"Lottie, there, um, there is a reason that I have yet to ask you out," Emmett said.
"Oh, and what's that?" I asked.
We'd been sitting on the couch, talking a little, but mostly watching some dumb romcom at a low volume. Zeus was laying on the floor beside us, and I had my feet kicked up on the coffee table.
"Well, I know you have questions about me. Ask away," he said. I pulled my feet into my body, turning to face him and causing Zeus to shift so he could see us.
"Well, for starters, I have yet to see you eat. Now, you can try to tell me it's some diet or something, but this is you, a teenage boy, we're talking about. So, why don't you eat?" I asked.
"That will make sense when I explain. Next question," he said.
"I want answers," I said.
He sighed a little before answering. "I know you do Lottie, but I can't give you those answers one at a time. They're all part of a larger whole."
"Okay, then. Why is your skin so cold and pale? Why do your eyes get slightly darker every day? How do you sit completely fucking still in a car cause I sure as hell can't? There's something different about you and your family. I mean, I still like you, and Alice and Mason seem cool. The twins don't talk to me much. Anyways, if I didn't know better I'd just assume you were vampire or something," I said. "Cause don't think I haven't noticed that you drive just a little more reckless than most and that you never wear a seatbelt as if you're not worried about dying."
"We are," he said simply.
"What?" I asked, hoping he wasn't saying what I thought he was.
"We are vampires," he said. "We don't drink from humans, we drink from animals. We're crazy fast and strong, but I'm stronger than most even at my weakest. Our eyes change color with our thirst, so when we haven't hunted in a few weeks, our eyes are almost black. That explain everything?"
"How the hell? There's no such thing," I said.
"Yes there is. That's why we have to stay out of the sun," he said.
"Cause you burn?"
"Even worse, we sparkle," he said.
I started laughing. "No, there's no way you're being serious right now. You're totally messing with me."
"Charlotte, I promise you, I'm not. Take your scars. They're almost completely healed, right?" He asked. I looked at my wrist, and sure enough the white scars melted into my skin, almost unnoticed.
"Yeah, and?"
"You usually wear bracelets. How would I have noticed if I didn't have heightened senses?" He asked.
"Maybe you're just very observant," I said.
"What do I have to do to prove it to you?" He asked. "There isn't any sun today, so do you want me to like uproot a tree or something?"
"I mean it wouldn't hurt your case any," I said.
"I'll give you a piggyback out to the woods. We'll be there in two seconds flat," he said. "Super speed. That should help, huh?" I nodded and he picked me up for a piggy back. He ran out into the woods so fast I almost puked.
"Close your eyes next time. It helps," he said.
"Which one?" He asked, placing his hands on two trees. They were too big to be uprooted without machines.
"The bigger one, my right, your left," I said, still trying to gain my grounding. I didn't feel like I was going to puke anymore, but that definitely took a lot out of me.
He wrapped his arms around the tree, lifting up. He was straining a little, but he uprooted the tree and dropped it on its side.
"Proof enough?" He asked. I nodded.
"Good, now that you know what you're getting yourself into, Charlotte, will you be my girlfriend?" He asked, closing the space between us instantly as he spoke.
"I'd love to Emmett," I said. He leaned down, pressing his lips to mine quickly. Before I knew it, he threw me over his shoulder and ran back into the house.
We hung out for a few more hours before Emmett had to return home. He promised to pick me up about ten the next morning, and told me not to eat because Esme and Carlisle were beyond ready to have a reason to cook.
