Chapter 14
"Lottie, those scars can only mean one thing," he said. "I know you tried to kill yourself."
"Emmett," I said.
"I know better than to try to make you talk about it, but if you should ever trust me that much, I'd love to be here to support you," he said.
"When people find out, it changes the way they treat me. I don't want that to happen with you Emmett," I said. I could feel the tears starting to well in my eyes.
"Hey, shh, don't cry," he said, pulling me into his arms.
"I, uh, I was bullied a lot when I was younger," I said. "And, in eighth grade it just got unbearable. So, on the last day of school, 14 year old me convinced my mom I was too sick to go to school. I stayed home, wrote a really long note, figuring maybe I could put it off long enough for Bella to get home and find out how truly broken I was.
"Anyways, I grabbed my pocket knife that Dad had given me and I'd never used. I pressed the blade to my right wrist, then my left. I was laying on my bed, and I closed my eyes, hoping to sleep long enough to not feel what death was like.
"Next thing I knew, Bella was shaking me awake, holding me and sobbing as mom held a phone to ear, talking frantically," I paused and took a deep breath.
"The next time I woke up, I was in the psych ward. I had bandages covering the lower parts of my arms. I felt strung out because they had so many drugs in my system. A few days later, I was forced to go to group therapy. Sitting next to me was a fifteen year old boy who drummed on everything. His name was AJ," I said.
"No one knew what anyone else was in for, but my reason was pretty obvious. AJ told me about a month later that he'd tried to kill himself just a week before I did. He was sitting on his bed with a noose, his note written on his desk, when his mother came in, screaming at the rope in his hands. She called 911 and had him admitted," I explained softly.
Emmett didn't say anything for a minute, holding me tightly. He pulled me into his lap, holding me as close to his chest as he could.
"Charlotte, I'm so sorry you ever felt like that. Just know, that if you ever feel like that again, I'm here for you. Even if you just want someone there to make sure you can't hurt yourself again," he said, burying his face in my shoulder. I took a few deep breaths to steady myself as Emmett and I remained holding one another.
"Thank you Emmett," I said.
"You're welcome," he said. It fell silent for a few minutes as Emmett pressed his lips to the top of my head.
"Do you want anything?" He asked as my stomach growled a little.
"I have some Doritos in the cupboard," I said, standing up. "Can I get you anything?"
"No thank you," he said. "Esme made a really great dinner."
"What was that about you guys camping earlier?" I asked.
"Oh, Carlisle and Esme pull us all out of school for camping and hiking and stuff whenever there's the off day where the sun shines," he said.
"That so isn't fair," I said. I got up, heading to the kitchen and grabbing the bag of chips and a can of Mountain Dew before heading back to the living room.
"When's your Dad coming home?" He asked.
"I have no idea. He's working on the Riley Biers case," I said. After a few more episodes of Whose Line is it Anyways? Emmett decided he should probably head home.
"I'll pick you up in the morning," he said, kissing my temple gently.
"I'll see you then," I said, smiling at him softly.
I texted dad to let him know that Emmett went home and I was headed to shower and then to bed.
