Chapter 2
We only had to suffer with Curtis's presence for about 10 minutes before Aunty Alex came back downstairs and got her husband, said her byes, and then left.
"Thank god," Dad said when they left. Mum and Madison came down 10 minutes after that, my mum looked lovely, it was strange to see her all dressed up, nice white top, jeans, heels, and a fancy new jacket I hadn't seen before. It took me a few minutes before I noticed Mum had dressed everyone similarly again, why did she do this? Madison was again her mini-me, in the same clothes minus the heels, plus a pair of brand-new white shoes. I wanted to ask why we were all dressed the same again, but the doorbell rang, and we all looked at Dad. He didn't even argue, just shook his head, and left for the door.
"Alex?" Lincoln asked.
"Oh no" Mum said sitting down on the arm of the couch, "I don't know who it is" she added The front door closed and then the living-room door opened and in bounded a small black dog all fluffy and his tail wagging.
"JACKSON!" Madison yelled before scooping the dog up for a cuddle, squeezing him to her face, Jackson returned the affection and licked her face in excitement, dad walked in followed by Uncle Tommy, he looked cool. dark hair slicked back, shiny brown eyes, strong jaw etched with facial hair, definitely been cut in the barber shop recently, his leather jacket looked cool too, don't know about his top underneath though, greyish V-neck top.
"Alright," Tommy said, he always sounds so easy-going, "everyone is in team King colours I see" he eyed everyone up laughed and began to start hugging everyone, he got to me, "Like your book? But don't worry it's not your only present," he said the later before I could answer his question.
"I did thank you; I ever tried a spell."
"Oh yes? What one?" Tommy said, sitting down next to me. I explained what spell I tried, and what happened. "that's interesting isn't it?" Tommy turned his head to Dad and then my mum. "Fire and water ay, tomorrow should be fun" he punched me in the arm lovingly, then clapped his hands and said, "Right is everyone ready to go, we can't leave them waiting."
"Them?" Madison asked quizzingly, stroking Jackson who's now all curled up on her legs.
"Everyone in the guild, of course, dying to meet you all, and see them two again," He said the latter part and twiddled his thumbs at Mum and Dad like it wasn't important.
"Why are they excited to see us?" Madison asked.
"Joking right" The entire guild can't wait, most of them have known your mum and dad since they were kids, and some have only seen photos of you all and your brothers, and are both happy and scared to be meeting them for the first time" he twiddled his thumbs again, Lincoln pulled a face which Tommy seen and prompted "you forget they're both and kind of powerful mages" whack! Mum hit Tommy around the back of the head. "Fine, very powerful mages, happy? Good, anyway, the newbies have never met them either, and they can't wait to do so."
10 minutes later, we are finally leaving for the guild, Tommy had made jokes about how the newbies think that my mum is a scary legend who will eat them alive, and dad can't take a joke and will fight anyone for the littlest annoyance, Mum and Dad weren't happy about that, Tommy kept winking at us and holding back a laugh. Dad opened the front door we were both hit by a surprisingly chilly wind, the sun was already setting, leaving a nice orange glow in the sky. It was decided that we would walk, it's only a five-minute walk. Jackson grew five sizes bigger up to Madison's hips and walked alongside her. Tommy remarked on how posh the area was and how he and Dad used to live in a similar area when they were younger.
5 minutes later we arrived at the footsteps of a large building surprisingly, for it being in the middle of London, marble steps lead to thick wooden double doors. Above that in bold letters "ETERNAL DRAGONS" it even had dragons racing through it. I suddenly felt nervous and a little sick, I have been waiting for this moment all my life, Jackson brushed up against my leg.
"Ready?" Dad asked standing by a door, Tommy walked over to the other one and pushed, and light cracked through the door. Just as Madison and Lincoln joined me side by side. It was amazing! The doors flew open, and an eruption of noise came pouring out.
"Happy birthday!" I'm shocked. I didn't expect this. There were so many people, so many smiling faces, I even recognised some of them from magazines. There was Ryan Garland gangly man with ashy blonde hair famous for hunting dangerous monsters. Stacey Hay, A short ginger short-haired woman, is renowned for her work in tomb raiding and finding treasures. Adele Meadow, A chunky woman, with sickly skin but didn't surprise me since she was famous for her potions, especially poisons. I had a quick look around the guild it was incredible. Such a large room bigger than what I ever could have imagined, to my right was a bar that spread around the corner and even further along the right wall, every drink I had ever known was behind that bar and some I didn't. past that along the right wall was a door with signs above them.
"Training room" I don't know where they would put a training room that would be big enough for this guild in the middle of London.
"Changing rooms. Boys" and next to that "girls" and finally "stairs to flats" I didn't think while I was outside why the building was so large, but I guess now it makes more sense. The furthest back wall had a large map of the United Kingdom, red dots scattered across it, and a cluster of them in London. The left wall had trophies, photos, achievements, and weapons. Everything had a reason to be hung up, I wanted to check it all out. and the centre of the room was filled with tables and chairs and what looked like a hundred people.
Before I could remember who I thought the next person was, a man walked to the front of the crowd, he was very well dressed in a navy-blue suit, now I had a closer look he was old, but nobody told him, because he was ripped. ocean blue eyes and grey hair that had a mind of its own, it looked like he had been electrocuted.
"I have been waiting a long time for this" his voice was soft but firm. He stood next to me and ruffled my hair, He shook Dad's hand, hugged my mother then declared loudly "The Kings have returned" A loud cheer boomed down my ears, and suddenly two large hands grasped either side of my face and turned my head around, I came face to face with my Godfather. I hugged him instantly. I got lifted off my feet since my godfather was like six foot five. he always smelled like sweets too, he did always eat them too, so I'm not surprised.
He put me down and I stared up at his smiling face. He was so cool and a powerful lighting mage too! Marvin claimed he was cool thanks to his Jamaican side, but I doubted that very much, he just oozed coolness and sometimes electricity. He's a tall Black guy, with a trendy haircut that was cut short around the sides, large brown eyes and as his wife Tracy says he has a massive head. He had on jeans, white shoes and a tight blue top, but I think he wanted to show off his muscles. "I'm taking him," Marvin said over my head to someone, and then I heard my dad say "Fine." Marvin ushered me through the crowd of people, all happy to see me, saying hi introducing themselves and wishing me a happy birthday.
"So, tell me, is your mother annoyed about the sweets, she has been giving me evil looks" Marvin whispered as we were still making our way through the crowd, we both turned around and sure enough there across the room giving him evil looks but then a smile at the end.
"I had some sweets, I got a yellow eye and some marks across my face, she was like you can't go to the guild like" I added the last part in the best impression of my mum I could do.
"that's hilarious" Marvin said before bringing me to a halt at a round table, across from me was a mini-Marvin, with the same hair, and the same massive head, it looked even bigger on him because of his smaller body. "This Charles is my son Kevin" Now it makes sense why they look so much alike, Marvin could never say Kevin wasn't his son, same head, ears, mouth, and nose.
"alright" Kevin said nodding upwards at me. He has a slight cockney accent that I didn't expect, "so fire or water?" he added.
"What?" I asked I wasn't sure what he meant.
"Your dad is a fire mage, your mum water, so what do you think you will be? I know you can be something else but that's very rare."
"I don't know after today." Kevin gave me a confused look. Marvin did too as he sat down, so I decided to sit down too and tell them about my attempts at fire spells.
"You burnt your finger from the inside? That's cool!" Kevin declared, and it made me laugh, "What happened after that?"
"My mum did some spell, something cold it was, it helped."
"Your mum can do ice spells?"
"That doesn't surprise me," Marvin said, " once we were all in some cave in Wales hunting down a horde of goblins that had kidnapped locals. Me, Tracy, your mum, and dad" he added when he saw my look of confusion and wonder of who we all were meant, "anyway they had set up traps hadn't they only dropped fire on us though, as you can imagine it didn't affect Nick, your father, he has always liked heat. But me, not so much. I had been burnt all down my right arm and most of the right side of my body, but your mum managed to heal me, first cooled me down with an ice spell, then healed me with light magic."
"I never knew that" I said, "Mum doesn't talk about any quests she went on."
"Really?" Came a soft voice from behind me, I looked up and saw Tracy, Marvin's wife, and Kevin's mum. I had only met her once before she was very nice, she hadn't changed much, she still looked young even though she was in her mid-30s, she a pretty black woman, her long braid was resting over her shoulder and almost hitting me in the head, large eyes filled with love and happiness looked down me. She had two diamond earrings one in each ear, a button nose and a pointy chin too. She leaned over me and squeezed me tight. This is my mum's best friend I have heard so much about. "it's so nice to see you, and I have all the stories about your mum."
"I can't wait to hear them, Mum did tell me some stories about you though Tracy is it true you once tried to ride a giant scorpion?"
What!?" Kevin said he looked deeply shocked.
"Oh, I see what stories she was telling" Tracy laughed and then looked a little terrifying " Did you know your mum once tried to punch said scorpion in the face because she was angry It knocked her water bottle over?"
"I did not, that's hilarious what else?"
"Let me think," Tracy said pondering, Marvin sat back in his chair, looking at this won't be good, while Kevin still looked shocked over his mother riding a scorpion.
"She once kicked a chief goblin in the nuts, and a troll, and a yeti and a minotaur, all in the nuts"
"Life lesson don't be somewhere Isabella King can kick you in the nuts," Kevin said, and I laughed.
"You can call me Bella" Kevin and I stopped laughing, " you know your mum once kicked a ghoul in the nuts, a ghost in the nuts, a draugr in the nuts, skeleton in the nuts and a vampire."
"Life lesson two, don't be anywhere either one of you two can kick me," Kevin said looking more scared than amused. Mum and Tracy stared at each other for a moment, then laughed and embraced each other with a hug, easy to see how much they missed each other.
"I can show you around if you want?" Kevin asked, I nodded and said.
"Let's go" We stood up and left the table. And made our way around the guild, Kevin introduced me to people as we went. I felt jealous of him in those few moments, he explained he had been around the guild for as long as he can remember. He knew everyone and they all called him Kev or little Kev. But when I thought about it, I get to be around everyone too, I get to spend time here and the more I meet people the more I can't wait to be around the guild for a long time.
I was first introduced to Madam Morris; she runs the guild according to Kevin. What she says goes. she's not the guild master though but no one argues with her. She works behind the bar, cooks all the food, cleans the guild and even helps with homework, she's the guild's mum everyone loves and would kill for her. She was an older woman who liked to wear tracksuits, grey hair scrunched up into a bun and a mole on her cheek. She squeezed my face and welcomed me.
Next was Eric Bridges, a veteran guild member who likes to wear kaftans, and sunglasses and carries a glass of wine, he used to be a teacher in the kingsborn academy, and taught both mine and Kevin's Parents. He is not to be messed with and is super strict but he will give magic lessons in the training hall if he is in a good mood. he told me I looked like my dad but hoped I acted more like my mum. The funny thing is I think that might be true.
I was introduced to so many people, they all seemed so nice I was surprised to meet A journalist from popular magazines and online blogs. Kevin put his foot down when they began to ask questions I didn't know the answers to or I was too uncomfortable with, like "Who do you think is stronger? Your mother or your father?."
"he's not gonna answer that" Kevin said, "who's stronger out of your sons?" she was not happy with that question and turned around. "Never give journalist the time to ask you questions they will always try and get something weird out of you, trust me."
"You Handled that well Kevin" came a voice from behind me, I turned around to see the guild master, he might be the most famous person in here. I felt his ocean-blue eyes staring a hole through my head. He took a sip of a cloudy drink while still keeping his eyes on me, then said. "So, your mother tells me you burnt your finger with scolding hot water, after successfully performing two fire spells, can you try it now, nobody is paying attention to us?" my mouth suddenly went dry, and a famous mage was asking me to show him a spell. I feel nervous but excited if I impress him I could impress the entire guild.
"I can try," I said, nervously.
"Good, fire right at me" he tapped his forehead, did he think this wouldn't hurt him if it hit? Does he think I am weak? Or does he think I won't be able to do it? Why am I so annoyed? I know I'm young and not supposed to be good at magic yet. most kids have never been taught how to use magic, they don't until they go to school, but I have so.
I put my hand in the air and pointed my finger at the guild master's forehead, I caught Kevin covering his mouth and his eyes rolling from side to side. the words of my mother echoed in my head, you have to mean magic, you have to be clear on what you want to do. I focused on remembering what my book said too, holding my wrist. Focus on pushing the magic through my arm. I cleared my mind and began!
Magic flowed through my arm; I was still feeling annoyed, more so that the guild master was grinning at me. My lip curled; my arm twitched, and my Wrist felt like fire. I paused for a moment took in a breath and focused completely on pushing as much fire out as I could. No water this time, a fireball, a big one! It blasted the guild master in the face, his head whipped back.
"Oh god," Kevin muttered. Through his hand still covering his face, everything went ghostly silent, I turned around and to my horror, the entire guild was all staring at me, that wasn't the scariest thing though, the creepy laughing coming from the guild master was terrifying. Ice fell off his face while he was still laughing.
"I seen that coming," he said loudly and pulled more pieces of ice off his face, "I asked young Charles to show me a spell and even asked him to aim it at me, a mistake on my part, I may have offended the young man so no surprise he put more power in it, thankfully I guarded myself with my ice shield. Or I would have lost an eye from that range" My hand got raised into the air.
"The birthday boy, Charles King!"
"The birthday boy!" was cheered from the guild.
"Snap him up while you can, he won't be available for long."
"I don't get what you mean?" I said.
"Almost nearly every guild member is on the lookout for up-and-comers to take under their wing as understudies or for better or worse sidekicks," Before I could respond there was a random face of some guy I don't know inches from mine. "Nice! you passed the masters test well done you, have you gotten any offers yet, I would like to offer you a summer spot with me."
"No, you should come with me," said a round-faced woman.
"Ignore them two, I can teach you a lot," said an older man with sunglasses on, before I knew it I was surrounded and getting offers I could barely hear. Thankfully or so I thought, the guild doors burst open and in walked my Grandparents. A pin drop could be heard. My grandmother stood proudly in the doorway, leopard print handbag tucked under her arm, silver bob length hair framing her face. She had bright red lipstick on, large sunglasses, black pants, and a white shirt.
"Where are my Granbabies?" she demanded. I noticed the people around me slowly backing away.
"You're one of her granbabies aren't you" Kevin whispered, before backing away too. thankfully my nan caught sight of Madison first, Who was in conversation with a girl around her age with red hair, across the guild from me, It's safe to say Madison looked terrified, and Nan barged past everyone in her way to get to Madison. Conversations only picked back up when Madison was forced into a suffocating hug. my grandfather had on a nice navy blue suit and white shirt, he noticed me, raised his thick grey eyebrows, and began to make his way over, shaking hands with people as he came. Kevin came back to the side.
"Your nan is scary." Kevin whispered.
"You have no idea," I said back, "hey grandad" I hugged him as he came close.
"Happy birthday," he said, "sorry about your grandmother you know how she gets."
"it's okay and I do." I shivered at the thought of my nan at her worst. "this is.."
"Kevin," Grandad interrupted me, "I have known your dad since he was your age." Kevin looked a little surprised but quickly shook it off and asked.
"Really? I think I'm better looking but what was dad like?"
"He and my son Nicolas were troublemakers, always getting into a spot of bother only got worse the older they got and when they learned more spells." Kevin and I laughed, "come on I'll get us all a drink and tell you more stories about your father."
I like spending time with my grandfather he is so relaxed and has good stories, we sipped our drink a blue cocktail with a mini umbrella in it. Virgin Sea Waves it's called I like it. My dad and godfather got in a lot of trouble, they broke into dark guild HQ to capture them, It failed, and they nearly died. They tried to ride on the back of a minotaur and almost died. While on summer camp they heard about goblins kidnapping people and then tried to save them and they almost died. They nearly die a lot. Speaking of nearly dying, I suddenly got a vice-like hug from behind. and I could not breathe. A strong smell of perfume burned my nostrils.
"Happy birthday!" said my Grandmother, I was finally let go and could breathe again, I could see Kevin holding back a laugh, which annoyed me.
"Thanks nan, Kevin told me before that you look really lovely, and your hugs look amazing, and he wants one!" his smile immediately faded. Before he was enveloped by my Nan.
"That's so sweet young Kevin come here." Kevin glared at me over my nan's shoulder. "Have you had a good day?" she asked letting go of Kevin he was still not happy.
"I have thank you and thank you for the grimoires."
"Anything happens with any of them?" Nan asked.
"I don't think so," I said truthfully. They all seemed the same apart from the colour.
"Has Ernest done his Little test yet?"
"What test? And who's Ernest?" I asked.
"He has" Kevin answered, and then looked at me " Ernest is the guild master and when he got you to use a spell on him, that his test, he does it to everyone new, you have to be thirteen though" he added when I looked at Madison.
"What happened?" Granddad asked, I explained what happened and that I was slightly annoyed at the guild master. "of course, he annoyed you he wouldn't want you to go easy on him, the test he made your dad do was catch a chicken, but he enchanted the chicken took your father a week to do it."
"He got me to spar with Tommy" he pointed behind him at my uncle Tommy in a fast-talking conversation with a blonde-haired woman. " He took it easy on me and pretended to be knocked out when I hit him." I spent the next hour being told about all the different tests the guild master had done, somewhere wrestling creatures or fighting monsters, some were simple spells, it did make me think why he had done this, but I stopped thinking about that when my nan began telling stories of her time as a teacher and she had taught half the guild during her time. She stopped fights and caught students with random and dangerous animals they had tried to bring into school, I began to feel more at home as the night went on everyone was nice, despite not knowing me, I barely spoke to that many people I was having fun talking with my family and Kevin. Before I knew it the night was over and I was home, in bed already looking forward to the upcoming reveal day tomorrow.
I was woken up to a bird singing outside my window, normally that wouldn't wake me up but I was already excited and my body couldn't wait for the day to start, I could smell toast and the closing of cupboard doors and decided that it was probably my mum in the kitchen and I will go down and see her, I swung my leg out of the covers and over the side of my bed before pricking my heel off the side of a book, a grimoire the dark magic one, picking it up, I wonder why I would even be given it as a present, nobody in hundreds of years has been revealed to be a dark mage.
In the kitchen was my mum there in her white fluffy dressing gown, reading a magazine with a knife floating next to her. It's strange seeing a new kitchen nothing like our old one this one is bigger with a large island in the middle and cupboard lining either side, and glass windows that slide open.
"Morning sweetie" she said "Toast?" She snapped her fingers and the knife began to butter the toast that had popped out of the toaster and landed neatly on a plate.
"Thank you"' I took a seat on a stool across the island from Mum.
"You okay?" Mum asked when I started rubbing my foot.
"I hurt my foot by standing on a grimoire... the dark one ironically."
"ironically" my mum responded quizzingly.
"Meant to be evil isn't it, dark magic?" I didn't expect my mum to scoff at me that was a surprise.
"And fire mage's are all hot tempered, lightening mages are energetic and light mages and angels" she giggled to herself; I could feel a lecture coming on. "Everything I have learnt about magic, mages, and history. Is that what you think about magic having an effect on a person's personality is laughable. Do you know why people believe dark mages are evil?"
"No mum" I was right lecture time.
"Each mage has their own natural magic that their bodies produces naturally. Mines water, Lincoln and your dad are fire, God knows what yours will be, anyway you can use other elemental magic along with neutral magic of course, neutral magic is the basic magic. Everyday magic, to move a pencil, to turn on a light switch, make a knife hover" she pointed to the knife that floated over to her. "it can make people stop talking, it can make them dance, throw up or even turn them to an animal, but natural magic is different, performing magic that isn't neutral or your natural magic it can take a toll on the body, and the worse one is Dark magic it can badly effect the body but on the upside its arguable the strongest magic, so you can see where I am going only certain people can perform this magic without draw backs, making them the strongest"
Mum stared at me with a smile on her face, she said after being in the guild she wanted to be a teacher, I could see it, she would be a great one.
"If they are so strong how did they all die out?" I asked.
"They didn't die out, they were hunted down and killed, it dates back to the Roman times, when dark mages were hired as soldiers then when they proved too strong they were rounded up and killed. It happened multiple times in history, they would have to fight back, and now Dark mages are known for causing rebellions and death which is wrong if they weren't trying to fight for their life for just living. do you think they would still be classed as evil or just something completely different?."
"I think you're right mum, you're really into this aren't you?"
"Think I might be a good history teacher, what do you think?"
"you'd be the best," I said and hoped she knew that I meant it with everything I had.
"Take some more toast" a whole plate full slid across the table to me, "and go and sit with your dad in the living room, he may rob some toast too" I laughed, said "will do" and left for the living room. My dad was there in his in his old, battered slippers, shorts and t-shirt, sipping a coffee and watching the news. I greeted him and offered him some toast, he took two pieces, and I then took me on the same couch.
"Over 50 casualties and many more injured in the latest large-scale battle to take place here in Budapest," said the news report standing in front of a car on fire. "Reports of civilians without Magical abilities have taken to the battle to aid their comrades with abilities, this comes after an entire guild was arrested and allegedly beaten for not responding to governmental orders and putting an end to protest. Protests are sent to continue despite the worrying threat of violence that has been taken place. The citizens believe strongly that guild should not be used as hired assassins or hired thugs to keep them under control."
"That looks serious has it gotten worse?" I asked Dad.
"a lot worse" he said "It's not just there though, all over Europe, and they're looking for a leader to help them get more people to join them. It might be a good cause that they are fighting for but no leader for people to believe in, so no one thinks they can win, so they aren't going to join" he sipped some of his coffee and stared at the TV. I thought about what he said, it does make sense.
"Would you join?" I asked. He turned to me, "You said it's a good cause like."
"It is, they want to live freely and have a say without the fear of a guild member turning up at their door, but we don't have that here and if any guild member from here goes over there and join the war that's going on they will be arrested and their family will be called in for questioning, and not only that guilds from this country get asked to go and fight the dark guild taking advantage of the chaos and always to fight the leaders of the rebellions to end it to save lives"
"Does that mean you will have to go?" I asked hoping for a no.
"If it gets worse or it's got to be ended quickly, if they send guilds from here it will be over very quickly" he might have sounded confident, but he didn't look like he liked saying it. "But changing the subject, reveal day is today, are you nervous?" and with that, I forgot all about the war, and charged headfirst into telling my dad how not nervous I was and how much I was looking forward to it. Not just that but going to Kingsborn like him and mum and being invited to join one of the school teams like all of my family did, I would work hard to become the number one student in my year.
Kingsborn Academy was different to other schools, it produced more guild members and magical experts than any other school out there only the other big three schools in England came close, but the special thing about Kingsborn is their rankings. From first years to fifth years are all ranked in their years, no one knows how they are ranked but they are and here's the kicker only the top 10 of each are open to the public matter if you're 11th or 111th no one would know apart from you, but you're 1st to 10th everyone knows and so do the guilds who come into the schools to watch the games and events and pick students for internships and even more, my goal? Impress a school team enough to be invited to join because that's the only way you can join one. Then take part in the event and raise my ranking to number 1! And get scouted by a guild.
Longest four hours of my life! I didn't notice the time when I was watching with my dad it was half six, my mum didn't tell me to go back to bed because she knew I wouldn't sleep, and we weren't leaving the house until half ten! Bouncing around the front room I was when it finally did hit half ten, all dressed in clothes set out for me and my dad steam ironed for me. Jeans, white shoes, white top, and jacket.
"Can you stop moving oh my god" Madison moaned. She had a bright yellow dress on. "you're so annoying."
"I want to hurry up and go," I said.
"So do I," She said we were all going, which was nice, only Dad got to go with Lincoln on his reveal day.
"Ready?" Dad said popping his head around the door. I jumped up instantly, "I don't think you'll need a jacket."
"Okay, I tore my jacket off and threw it on the couch, in the hallway, were Mum, Dad and Lincoln, and Dad and Lincoln had different coloured tops on to me for once, Dad had Black, Lincoln grey, and Mum had a nice blue dress on. Dad opened the front; he wasn't wrong I didn't expect it to be so hot. We walked, towards a transmission station that's how to get to Kingsborn I had no idea. Mum and Dad greeted some neighbours as we left they were nice, Betty older woman and her husband Dell. They wished me luck and said they hoped I joined their age group the wind mages. We made it to the transmission station a 5-minute walk from our home and waited for Dad to get the tickets. It's like a shop underground and two long tunnels, IN and OUT. I guess he will be going for the out one. Dad gave me a ticket and told me to stay close to him as it was getting crowded around Madison too, I wasn't nervous before but now I am nervously excited, as we made our way down this narrow passageway to a silver wall at the end.
"It's just like what happened in the car?" Dad said to me and Madison, "only this wall is always active and reacts to your tickets so just walk through okay? Oh, and don't stop" he added that last bit as we reached the wall, he then grabbed both our arms and pulled us through it. Horrible, I don't like the feel of it, like a cold bath but you don't get wet. I turned to see Lincoln and Mum appear through the wall. Then we continued walking, a short walk passageway became wider as more people joined our group, and more people joined, and more people joined. The passageway was wider but not wide enough it was loud and crowded some people started bumping into me too, like a playground noise but it was An adult talking and pushing and pulling their kids through. Then it hit me, reveal. I wasn't the only one going, families all over London were going too, all from various places, no wonder it would be so loud, I'm starting to get why Lincoln's old school only allowed a plus one. Dad's grip tightened and then he got angry because the heat was coming off, it doesn't affect loved ones according to Mum, we will just feel warm but others!, they moved, but no one got close to him, and I could breathe a bit freer now. Eventually, a noise bomb hit, if I thought it was loud before oh my god it had nothing on this. It was so loud it took away from the grandeur of where we were it was a colossus, with a marble ceiling, multiple floors, lining the sides and a giant platform like an X spread across linking everything up how can something this big be underground in London?
"This way," mum said, she and Lincoln swooped past us and made their way through people. Mum and dad hadn't been recognized before as everyone wanted to get out of the passageway but now we didn't have that problem, groups of parents and kids standing in the way, separate groups looking for other people and some waiting on them too, all began to notice Isabella and Nicolas king and their three children.
"Are they going to kingsborn."
"That's their kids!"
"you're going to school with the king family."
"Do you think she will let me get a photo?"
"she's back."
"He's back"
"they're back."
"I wonder if people know it's you dad?" Madison asked.
"You think? I'm not sure?." He joked back to Madison "There we are" he said nodding to another way passageway" KINGSBORN ACADEMY in big bold letters sprawled across it. Mum and Lincoln were already there waiting for us, onlookers were gawping at her but she paid no attention and walked with us, suddenly there was a commotion behind us, apparently, a lot of people decided that way the time they wanted to head to kingsborn too and some pushing and shoving started and then end when mum and dad had stopped and turned around and stared at them.
"Come on" mum said to them with a smile, "nice and slowly and no pushing now" I don't understand why an entire group of adults and children obeyed her but okay, less noise and no distractions I'm good with it. Another passageway with white walls down, and another silver wall at the end, where have I seen this before?
I would have never expected what was on the other side. I went through, I put my right hand up because Dad was holding my left, and a nice breeze hit it, the wet bath feeling never came, I stepped out onto a pathway leading to massive brick walls of a castle defence. On top stood two kids of about seventeen each I could barely see.
"Welcome to Kingsborn" they shouted" come on in!" we walked forward, I turned to see where we came from and alone stood a large silver gate shining like a silver sea before a young boy burst through it. To my right was a stretch of perfectly cut grass Flanking the large walls to another silver gate at the bottom, the same with the left. Past them were forests and a lot of it. I could see the school past the wall. The wall was larger than, I thought as I walked through it, one I didn't hear any noise from behind and that was shocking, families all over the grass taking photos and watching a show put on by two male students I think in blue Blazers, one was creating Orbs that floated in the air and the other student created a whip of flames then burst the Orbs with them. On the right side is a performance of two female students creating earth monsters and having them charge each other.
But they had nothing on the school. It was everything I imagined it to be, a glorious, large spectacle so, I was speechless. It was said to have belonged to a queen who gave birth to her son the future king hence the name kingsborn.
A stone path leads the way to the school, divides into a large space circling an elegant fountain, a statue made in the shape of a mermaid holding a vase. This was a space car used to park on. Trees were dotted between windows and perfectly grew to not overshadow the windows. Even up to the second floor. The school just keeps going must be two hundred yards to reach the end of it on either side Stone steps lead up to double wooden doors the size of double decker bus. Teenagers sat on the stone balustrade taking photos of each other, they even created sparks from their hands to add effects.
We made our way to the front doors, and a group of six stood in the way, well I thought six turned out they were part of the line, I looked around them and down the lengthy line but then my jaw hit the floor, I thought kingsborn was like a cool name but this school! is fit for a king. The foyer had everything I wasn't thinking of, marble floors and a red carpet stretching the entirety of the foyer. pale white stone pillars flanking opposite sides and descending to the bottom before a spiral staircase that looks like a spider in the middle its legs connect the top and bottom floor and its body a place to stand and look over the foyer, underneath the platform was a black wooden door. At the very back above all was a painted glass window with the school crescent on it. A golden crown, with red inner lining and white bottom fur, around it eight orbs each an assorted colours to represent a different magical nature, from left to right circling over the crown.
Red for fire, brown for earth, bright yellow for lighting, jet black for dark. The light one was see-through, dark blue for water, three white marks for wind and finally pale blue for ice. Pictures lined the walls I could see them properly since I was still in this line, which was slowly moving forwards. We had people behind us at one point, but they noticed Mum and Dad then decided to walk away for some reason.
"Oh hey, I thought that was you lot" came a voice from behind, it was my godfather Marvin and the rest of the Church family coming through the front door. Kevin appeared beside his dad and gave me a nod when he saw me, both of them had charcoal black jackets on they must have been boiling, wearing jeans, brave. Yasmin and Tracy walked out from behind them both in blue dresses.
"Nice Jacket," Dad said greeting his best friend.
"You know me I got to represent my team" he threw up two peace signs and lighting bolts sparked out, "I see you joined me" Dad also threw up two peace signs and a fireball burst out, I thought it was funny and did the same to Kevin and my fingers hissed.
"Close enough" Kevin giggled. "We knew you was here; we could hear people talking about the king family" I gave Kevin and first bump as he got close.
"Yeah I heard all that in that big transmission centre before."
"Well, your parents are famous and haven't been seen properly for a while, but never mind that how exciting is this?" Kevin paused and looked around. I joined him. This room was magnificent.
"Very, I can't wait to see more of the school," I said.
"You know it used to be a palace for the queen." Yasmin said, joining me and Kevin at the back of the group I hadn't noticed the others walking with the line.
"I did, it got its name from a king being born here," I said, I had read up a little on the school over the years.
"Well did you know that the school teams all came from the queens personal bodyguards?"
"I did not know that one" I said it wasn't in any of the books I flicked through or any of the articles on the internet.
"The queen took in children from all over the country during wars time then to pass time, the bodyguards would teach them, eventually forming groups and competing against each other, if you see any students with a different colour blazer on they are in a school team."
"that's so cool, who are the school teams."
"OH! You two hurry up and come here" Tracy shouted, they left us while we were talking, and we ran over and saw a desk in between two pillars with a woman, who had green hair sitting at it, she didn't even look up.
"names," she said.
"Charles King and Kevin Church," mum said, now she looks up. "Take these, they are proof of your registration to be attending this school and for your reveal" she handed us both a blank piece of paper, "and before you go place your thumbs on these please" She slid another blank piece of paper on it, but I did what I was told, she pressed her thumb on mine and it glowed. "that's all have a good day."
"What was that about I asked Mum as we walked away" She handed the blank piece of paper back but now it has writing on it. My name was at the top and my thumbprint at the time.
"This piece of paper will change throughout your time in school so do not lose it, actually I'll take it" She took the piece back, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tracy explain the same thing to Kevin and then promptly taking the paper too.
"What do we do now?" I asked Mum as she put the piece of paper she took into a blue handbag I hadn't noticed before; Dad and Marvin were in full flow talking each other's heads off while Madison's head span from Dad to Marvin and back.
"Walk around the school and explore I guess," she said.
"Start over there and make our way around" Tracy suggested. She pointed to a door in the corner. It would be directly to the right if you entered from the main door. I agreed, and we made our way over to the door and opened It, Kevin and I walked through first and into a hall, classrooms on the left a window that looked over the school grounds and a pleasant view of the large wall that surrounded the school. Families were still relaxing I guess waiting for the revealing to begin.
The classrooms had numbers and a letter on them, G-1 on the first door, I had leant over to Kevin and I told us to touch the door, I didn't know why but we did, and a burst of chilly air shot out and blasted us in the face.
"Alex told me the teachers have been permitted to put spells on their classroom doors." Well now I want to try all the doors, I met Kevin's eyes and he thought right as he ran to the next one and his finger froze up, all the way to the knuckle was covered in ice, and when he let go it disappeared.
"Oh, that's cool," Kevin said, "cold though!."
"I want to it try," I said then went to touch the door but opened up. And I was face to face with a pretty blonde-haired girl about my age, she must be here for the reveal day. She has large blue eyes and eyelashes, a small button nose, and red lips.
"Charles?" a voice came from inside the classroom, which took me by surprise I forgot where I was for a moment, "Charles, watch out, so Charlotte and her family can get by" Aunty Alex appeared from behind the girl. I stepped to the side and accidentally into my mum who held my shoulders. Charlotte I think she is called walked past me, her silver dress flowing like it was being blown by a light breeze, flower-scented perfume wafted delightfully off her. She was then followed by a beautiful woman who must have been at least 6 foot tall, with blue eyes that shined down on me and a sculpted marble face, nothing looked out of place except her being here and not at a photo shoot, I quickly guessed she must have been Charlotte mother, the same hair and dress gave it away, I'm starting to wonder why parents like to dress their kids in the same cloths as her. if her dad walks out now in a dress I'm going to lose it. He didn't, Charlotte got her looks from her mum because this dude was not a good-looking man. He must have been at least four inches shorter than his wife, round face like the moon and a scar like a crater just above his right eyebrow. Thin lips, thin eyebrows but perfectly cut white teeth I had seen them when he greeted my dad. He held his arm out, his suit was nice, dark blue with a small black line across it.
"Nicolas" he grumbled, it still sounded posh. I think that might just be how he talks because Dad didn't hesitate.
"Stanley" Dad replied, this was awkward nobody said a word. Until Mum broke the ice,
"Have fun at the reveal sweetie?" she said to Charlotte, who smiled back, she had a nice smile.
"Thank you I will" she replied in a soft well-mannered voice. Stanley ushered his family away but not before Mum and Charlotte's mum could do that double kiss thing, no idea what that is about.
"Come in come in" Aunty Alex said, gesturing for everyone to come in, I don't know if she meant the random family of four that followed us. parents and two boys, both stunned to be in the same room as mum and dad from how they were staring at them. Aunty Alex put a spell on the door and then closed it. I got a good look around the room, Alex's desk was in front of a whiteboard and faced the rest of the tables that all faced her desk, three sets of tables. Two seater tables on each wall facing the front leaving only enough room for a space to sit. And the middle table was two, two seated tables pushed side by side to create four-seater ones with everyone once again facing the front. The wall had pictures of different monsters on them, with explanations of what they do and how to stop them.
Vampires lived off human blood and the best way to stop them, was sunlight, light magic, or a stake to the heart but who wouldn't that stop ay?
Werewolves, forcibly change at the full moon, how to stop them, a weapon made out of silver. Ice magic.
"Anybody have any questions?" Alex asked.
"yes," the dad from the family I didn't know popped up. "What is it you teach here?."
"In this classroom I teach, supernatural, it's the class about what supernatural beings are out there what they are about and how to defend yourself if you ever come across a hostel one" She seemed proud of that, she practised saying that a few times.
"Is such a class necessary? Why do children need to be taught that if guild are supposed to be dealing with them, kind of sounds like it would only scare them and worry them." I witnessed a special moment, every adult that I knew shook their heads and whispered idiot, which was Mum, Dad, Marvin, and Tracy. Aunty Alex didn't but she is trying to be professional.
"Where are you from sir?" Alex asked. Mum and Dad took a seat in a couple of chairs in the middle row. I took one by the wall with Kevin. All the others sat down too.
"Norwich," he said proudly.
"Been goblin attacks there recently if I'm correct?" Alex looked to Dad and Marvin for confirmation. They nodded their heads. "Now do you know how to defend from the initial attack?" the man stammered, "you use fire, but before you speak" She shut him down before he could get another word in as he had thought of something. "You don't have to be a fire mage to use fire" his smile was gone. "Any basic fire spell will do then get some distance and get into a safe location then call the emergency number." She won that one. well done Aunty Alex. Actually, why is she in a blue dress? I have only just noticed. What is it with these bloody blue dresses? "Any more questions?"
"Yes?" the guy popped back up, It looked like this was not over, his family had sat down now, I think the boy closest to him might be attending the reveal he looked about my age, a little shorter than me but with that ponytail which looks cool, he could look taller. "What you just said, would they do that?" he pointed at my parents and Kevin's parents, Alex looked at them with the please just go along with it look.
"If I wasn't me" Dad said leaning back on his chair, pointing at his chest. "Well because you know... I'd just kill them all" he stretched his arm out behind it and Marvin high-fived it. Lincoln snorted with a giggle. "But if I was a child or an adult who can fight them off, then yeah I'd have done what, what's your name again miss?" Even Mum giggled at that.
Alex shook her head and then said, "Stop leaning back in your chair."
"I agree with miss stop leaning back in your chair. You should definitely do what she says." Lincoln and Yasmin laughed behind me.
"I will kill you" Alex mouthed at him, but Dad just laughed. The strange man didn't ask any more questions, I think his son told him to stop. They left soon after. Dad and Alex began to bicker over him being an idiot according to Alex. He disagrees. Mum suggested that I and the other kids could go explore by ourselves if we wanted. Kevin didn't need any more than that he jumped up, and made his way to the door. But Mum told him to wait and then handed him a map of the school and we left. Kevin, Yasmin, Lincoln, and I. Madison decided to stay with Mum, she was enjoying the bickering a bit too much. Outside of the classroom, Kevin had stuffed the map into his pockets and just began to walk. Touching classroom doors as he passed. One roared like a lion, another blew small ruffs of fire out like a baby dragon with a cough,
"Do you know where you're going?" Yasmin asked him, I hadn't heard her talk much she was normally with Lincoln or with her face in a book, a mixture of a London accent and posh one, it didn't surprise me too much, I imagined they had money, I mean their parents are successful and famous which I did seem to forget from time to time.
"nope," Kevin said as he pressed another door, then almost fell to the floor when a clown face shot out the door and immediately back, onlookers laughed, but he shrugged it off. "Almost got me then."
"I'll show you around" Yasmin said and then walked past Lincoln and we followed her around. First, we made our way down the corridor, these sets of classrooms are all based on the theory of the supernatural. at the end were two doors, one into another corridor and the other leading to a set of stairs. But Yasmin opted to leave through the doors. Classrooms were on the right this time and light came through, There were windows on the left about halfway up and a door. As we got closer I saw a rectangular garden-like set-up in the middle of the school. Benches spaced throughout it, trees standing tall and even a water fountain in a corner. Yasmin called this a quad and there was another one on the opposite side of the school and in between them was the assembly hall. We went out into the quad; stone flooring led the benches with perfectly cut grass surrounding it all. I can smell the freshness of it all. I eventually noticed that on either end of the quad where windows of classrooms including Alex's, inside still bickering was my family. We left the quad; Yasmin began to explain the school layout.
"So, there's three floors. The main entrance where we all came in is the ground floor. You can see the second floor if you just look up" I know what she means I did notice that while waiting in line. "The second floor is just like the ground floor only no quad, but it does have a relaxing view. On the right side of the school, we have the nurse's office" We were approaching that, it had double doors with windows carved into them I peeked through and saw a waiting room and another set of double doors but no window in them.
"Its massive in there its goes to both floors, and there is two nurses and eventually you will be in there everyone goes in eventually. I ended up in there last year thanks to the language wars."
"What?" I said, so confused by that last bit.
"Oh, I should explain that bit she said as we came out of another set of doors, now we were at the back of the school, and it suddenly got loud. Yasmin stopped by a window that looked out at the back of the school, I had never seen anything like this. Thousands of people crowded in and around marquees and tents, some looked like restaurants some looked like makeshift pubs, all neatly in lines stretching across the field, and circus, and fun fair games too, looked like fun.
"Mental that isn't it," Kevin said. He pressed his hand on the mirror.
"We can go out there soon once I have explained abit more," Yasmin said snapping my and Kevin's attention back to her. "when you start school you're put into a form class, it's like a class that you attend every morning with the same teacher who will be your form teacher and they will give updates on school stuff and checks in and helps you out, language wars comes from them, because there are only six form classes for each year and they are split into two groups of three and those groups learn different languages, mine is French and the group is Spanish, long story short I broke my arm and it got fixed" looks like Yasmin is getting annoyed that Kevin and I keep looking out of the window and not at her and paying attention.
"Before we go outside too, do you see the bit of the school on the left that looks like the nurse's office on the otherside that's the library, underneath us here, in the cafeteria and all combat room that the basement level, you do combat outside to, and there is other bits but you two have stopped listening to me." She's right I got most of what she said but I just saw a guy walk past with a snake, another one on a Hoverboard and a girl creating mud golems. We made our way to the doors of the stone steps, I got to the bottom and saw people coming out of the basement floor. Kevin and I made our way through the crowd and watched as students from the school team performed spells to an audience, one guy set himself on fire and then immediately put himself out not a burn mark on his clothes. A girl had control of over ten plates spinning in mid-air then began to hover over the heads of people and back to her again.
"Let's grab some food," Yasmin said, she made her way to us and grabbed Kevin by the arm she knew how to get him to do what she wanted," Lincoln said handing me £20" Mum told me to give it to you when we left Alex's classroom".
"Thanks" I said, money in hand I followed Kevin and Yasmin into a marquee. It smelled incredible. My mouth began to water instantly. a Caramel Mountain that leaked out chocolatey goodness rested behind the cashiers like a volcano ready to blow. Yasmin made us grab a seat first before ordering, she chose a wooden bench that sat four. I could smell our neighbour's cinnamon hot chocolates it made steam come out of their ears with each sip, but what caught my attention was their meal pastry gladiators that fought each other in the middle of the plate, spilling the other strawberry guts. I want one! It was entertaining, smelled delicious and looked it too.
"what's that called?" I leant over and asked the older gentlemen.
"Pastry coliseum mate"
"Thank you" I, told him, I told the others what I was getting I got up and went to the queue queue waited in line to place my order. "One pastry coliseum please."
"No problem that's £13 my love" the cashier said I handed her the money and she handed me a number ticket. number 34, I waited, Yasmin had ordered hers before I came she got, strawberry fields, no idea what it is but sounds amazing. Mine came out with a lid over.
"Thank you" I took the plate then went and sat down next to Lincoln who must have been waiting for me to come back because as soon as I sat down he got up. Kevin was sitting across from me.
"What did you get? Kevin asked, I didn't respond only opened up the lid, to the waft of fresh pastry dough and strawberry and two gladiators in a little arena standing up to dual. It was awesome, pastry clashed against pastry, swords on shields and then eventually one was beheaded spectacularly with a spinning move. They stopped moving and I began to tuck into one and let Yasmin have some of the other, warm strawberry pie I couldn't ask for more. I'm going to get more. I stood up. Lincoln and Kevin were already tucking into their food, they had something similar, Lincoln's was a pastry animal farm and Kevin had small cars that raced around. Yasmin was tapped on the shoulder by two dark-haired girls.
There was quite a queue still, but I didn't mind I got to see what other people were wearing, mainly just different variations of anything that can move. Cars, humans, and animals. I stood behind a red-haired girl she was vibrating with joy and excitement; her hair looked a little dirty and her white bag looked a little beaten down. But who cares she seems happy. Eventually, she was next up and ordered her food, princess pastry for £4:99 but then she threw her bag to the floor and began to dramatically look through it.
"I have it I have it," she said in a panicking voice, "I can't believe I lost the five-pound note" she began to whisper to herself, and I could hear others begin to whisper about her too. I leant beside her and said.
"You dropped this" I handed her a five-pound note. She looked from her bag to me, wasn't just her hair that looked a little dirty, a few marks on the top, and holes in her jeans that I don't think were done fashionably.
"Thank you," she whispered, her large green eyes looked misty, and recklessly covering most of her face. And her full lips pulled into a thin line. I nodded and stopped and offered my hand to help her up, she took it and stood up paid for her food, said thank you to me again and left.
"Yes dear?" the waiter called to me, I looked down at the £2 in my hand, then looked at the menu for something I could get and saw hot chocolate for £2 and got that and headed back to the others.
"Thought you was getting more food?" Kevin said,
"Changed my mind," I said and took a sip of the hot chocolate, steam came out of my nose, I must look like a baby dragon. Cinnamon and caramel are such a good combination.
"Having fun?" came a familiar voice that I recognized, I turned around and saw Dad standing behind me.
"yeah", we all said together. I suddenly began to notice the eyes of the other people at the other tables starting to stare at us. "who's up for checking out some of the carnival games?
"There's carnival games?" Lincoln asked. He straightened up and looked excited.
"of course," Marvin said appearing out from beside my dad about to eat a piping hot burrito, it looked impressive. "The school always does its stuff like this" he motioned to the restaurant that we are in, "and some carnival games, some people come early to try everything out." We didn't need more convincing everyone was up and following Dad and Marvin, and it became blatantly obvious that people were staring at Dad, before he was here it might have been harder to get through squeezing past people but now people moved out of our way, it wasn't long before a group of young kids asked for a photo of him.
"of course," he beamed and leant over for a quick pic. The kids looked at Lincoln and me for a moment, I think they put two and two together when their mouths opened up to form a giant O. We stopped first at a test your strength game. Whack the red button as hard as you can with a heavy hammer, I felt like Thor then I only got it halfway up and then I felt like Thor but with a cold. Dad hit the bell at the end. And he was the only one who did that until Marvin stepped up at the end and nearly took the bell off! I've never heard a hammer hit anything that hard in my life! he won a panda and gave it to Yasmin who looked both embarrassed and pleased. Next was shooting tin cans, then shooting ducks and then shooting clowns there were a lot of shooting games here. He tried throwing rings on bottles a lot harder than it looked I managed to bounce them off every time.
We arrived at a throwing game now; this one looks simple throw a ball out of a pyramid of pins and knock them down. I managed to hit three tins off and missed everything after that, Kevin fared no better, eventually, we both gave up and let our dads have a go. They leant back so far and even put their leg in the air like baseball players then launched the balls as hard as they could. They missed every shot. Hilarious really.
"Never mind this" Dad said in a huff, "shall we go try the magical ones?"
"Magical ones?" I asked and Lincoln slid up to my side.
"Yeah magical games like carnival game but magical versions, these are for the people who have no magic."
"There is people here with no magic here?" Lincoln asked, Kevin, Marvin and Yasmin stood to the side waiting for us, I guess they must already know what Lincoln and I were about to be told.
"of course, some are here to tour the school before they start and not everyone in magical families have magic, Marvin has a cousin who doesn't have magic."
Marvin was nodding, "My cousin Anthony, you know he is a police officer now."
"That's great!" Dad said before ushering us away past onlookers hoping to catch a glimpse of Dad. Something he said repeated in my mind.
"Dad?.., you said some of them would be touring the school before they start."
I think Dad caught on to what I was getting at. "Well, this school also takes in some none-magical students and teaches them magical items and other stuff I don't know that much about what they learn but be nice when you meet some of them because it must be hard being different in school, none magic in a magical school it must be tough... Bullying" he added the last part to drive home his point. Look after those who need it, something my parents have always taught me. Dad has never liked bullies, just the idea of people being picked on, insulted, or even hurt for no reason makes his blood boil, from the steam coming off him sometimes I think makes his blood boil. My Auntie who died just before I was born was bullied pretty badly when she went to school despite her brothers (Dad and Uncle Tommy) always defending her, eventually stopped but left a lasting mark on my Dad.
We came to the first magical carnival game. It was getting harder to tell where we were with all the people around, tents and games taking up all the space. DragonsBreath was the first game. You hold a liquid given by the vendor and blow it threw the large ring on a pole in front and it creates what looks like a dragon's fire breath attack. Yasmin first spat out her water and missed the pole. Lincoln laughed and then stepped up to have a go, he managed to hit the ring and created a small flame.
"Step aside," Marvin said and took a big swig of the liquid and sprayed the water instead of spitting it, that worked a lot better, a large flame burst out the side of the ring, and then the vendor checked how far he went,
"3 metres," the vendor said in his strong Birmingham accent. Marvin turned to face us with a smirk on his face.
"I thought you spit it" Lincoln said, "I didn't know to spray it!"
"You live and learn kid" Marvin mocked. I didn't fancy a go of this, I didn't think I could do the spray thing. Next up was the gauntlet pistol, I went first and slid my hand into the metal gauntlet with its fingers shaped like a gun, instantly I felt a pinch around the wrist, then after being explained to by the mullet guy the vendor of this game.
"Aim your gauntlet at the target wee man, hit 10 you win big, 6-win middle and 3 win small, to shoot tap the top of it, it will fire the magic it has absorbed".
I did what he said and tapped the top and outshot a small orb-like object that whizzed across and narrowly missed the target in the centre.
"Cool" I whispered to myself, steadied my aim, and shot nine more times I hit it twice and missed the other. Dad had a go next and pinged nine targets including the moving ones, but what I noticed about his orb compared to mine, his orb was ruby red. Marvin's was a crackling yellow, even Lincoln's had a hint of red in it. Dad got a massive elephant.
Next was a boxing game, and the smallest man I had ever seen was in charge of it. He held a pair of boxing gloves in his hand standing next to a punch machine,
"Having a go little miss?" the vendor said to Yasmin, she immediately spun her head to Marvin and mouthed.
"Did he just call me small?" Kevin coughed violently holding back a laugh and even hid behind me, to avoid Yasmin's death look, "yes I'd love a go, thank you" she sounded mad, Yasmin proceeded to take the glove slip it on and change into what looked like a boxing stance.
"what's magic about this?" I asked Kevin, he shrugged his shoulders.
"The punching bag can only be moved by magic," Marvin said leaning in between Kevin and me, "so more strength of magic and force of a punch counts for a lot here." Yasmin let back and let rip with a big swing and hit the punching bag clean, it flew back into the machine with a thud, number began scaling upwards on the machine eventually halting at 675.
"Not bad" the vendor said taking the glove back from Yasmin. "who's next?"
"I'll go," I said, stepping forward handing the vendor a pound and taking the glove, slipped it on my right hand and felt a pinch around the wrist and slight suction too. I got into position and practised a swing stopping just before contact, then I went for it with everything I had. Bang! It flew back with a louder thud than I expected.
"946?" the vendor said, eyeing me quizzingly. I turned to see my family and friends looking just as shocked as the vendor,
"What the hell? Kevin said. "All that chatting we have done, and you fail to mention monster magical power?"
"I didn't mean that," I said honestly. Pointing at the machine.
"that's some power," Marvin said.
"Hell, yeah it is," Lincoln said flexing his muscles. Dad laughed and joined.
"that's the king's family power," Dad said.
"We are all like that" came Mum's voice from behind and the others. "I see that sweetie was very impressive but it mummy's go now." Yasmin and Kevin looked excited to see Mum have a go, Tracy nudged Marvin's arm and Madison came to a halt next to Lincoln looking more interested in her large ice cream cone filled with sparkles, caramel chocolate dripping off the side.
"Here you go" The vendor looked up at Mum in awe, it didn't take long for Mum to put the glove on and swing.
"1564" the vendor gasped then checked his machine to see if it was still working. Dad began to giggle.
"Anyone else want a go?" Mum said holding out the boxing.
"After that?" Marvin said, "notNotchance, let's move on to something else before someone tries to force me into it." He gave a dark look towards Tracy and then added and began to pull the first along. If I thought the staring was bad before, now Mum was here it got ramped up to a whole new level. Photos were taken of Mum and added as they walked past. Loud gasped and "Oh oh god," kids began to point. We stopped at a new game. Small green creatures roamed around the vendor's feet. They had on what looked like little white dresses. The game was a football game score past the little green creature. Imps, Mumm told me what they are called everyone wanted a go at this, and it became obvious who had and hadn't played football because some of these kicks were horrible, the best by far was Tracy smashing it into the top right corner. And the worst? Marvin, couldn't kick the ball straight always flying off to the side.
"I never played as a kid, just wasn't a fan." He said, making excuses after every kick. I missed my shot bouncing it off the post, Dad went last, and he also bounced It post but it hit the imp in the face. It looked like it hurt. I walked over to the goal and leaned over the imp lying on the ground.
"You okay buddy?" I said softly. Up close the imp's skin looked rough, dark green like a Mossy tree. The imp turned its head to look up at me, With round eyes and a thin nose, pointy ears and two large yellow teeth separated, it looked like a vampire with a sweet tooth. The imp nodded its head.
"that's nice of you," the vendor said. "Nobody checks on the imps if they hurt them."
"why?" I asked after offering my hand to help the imp up. it wrapped its Long thin fingers around my hand.
"They don't care, but they see imps in a different light."
"that's mean, everyone and everything should be treated with respect until they show you why you shouldn't respect them."
"Well said" Mum praised me. The vendor smiled and then helped the imp behind the goal and a new imp came out. Mum ushered me away, I looked back and saw the previous imp looking around the corner, I waved at it, and it waved back and gave a crooked smile.
Suddenly a loud bell rang out and a female voice boomed over the entire crowd.
"Attention. The reveal is upon us, will the participations please make your way to sports hall A with one parent or guardian please, more information will be explained then" excited chat flared up instantly and families started to split up.
"Ready?" Dad said after he saddled up next to me. " Mum is going to be with Madison and Lincoln" he added after seeing the look on my face. Kevin and Marvin stepped in front.
"let's go" Kevin said bursting with excitement. We said our goodbyes to our families,
"Good luck and have fun," Mum said. She looked more nervous than excited.
"Good luck," Tracy said.
"I wonder if I'll be a lighting mage like" Kevin said as we walked with the crowd, I'm not 100% sure where we are going but Dad and Marvin are, and they are leading the way. Eventually, we came large white building "Sports Hall A" in bold letters sprawled across it. We entered, slowly shuffling in with other kids and their parents I couldn't get a good look around because of the number of people around me but I did know that we were walking down a corridor and then through double doors and thankfully into a large open space, a gymnasium, basketball hoops pulled up, inspirational message on the wall that said stuff like, "tough times don't last but tough people do", "our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.
Rows of fold-out chairs face a makeshift stand and a projector screen rolling down the wall. Kevin and I followed our parents to our seats towards the back of the gym, we sat in the middle of the row and an older man sat down next to me and smiled. I caught the other kids staring at me this time, not my dad for once and that was weird. A tall boy dark with a bit of a sneer etched on his face. A gaggle of posh-looking adults were at the front eyeing the crowd if a face screamed I had money it was this guy with blonde hair in an expensive-looking suit, looking down his nose at people and to my surprise he was with Charlotte's dad, that girl I saw coming out of aunty Alex's classroom before.
Stood on the makeshift stand was a slim man, I could see his face properly. He had on black pants and a long-sleeved white shirt rolled up to his elbows and on a black waistcoat. he signalled for someone to hand him a microphone, he got one put it to his lips and then cleared his throat to silence the noise.
"Please take a seat," he said in a low dry tone. Sounds like he does not want to be here let alone doing this. "Hello. Welcome to the reveal day, let's make this quick. My name is Mr Payne and a teacher here at kingsborn academy... the reveal will take place momentarily."
"Guess he's done taking about himself" I whispered to Dad, he giggled then replied.
"he's always been like that, don't annoy him, he has alwa"...
