Pulse - Chapter 10
Naomi told me I have to go to school today because the academy was only for weekends and breaks. I complained that if I went back with my hair like this, they would surely call me out on it. But apparently everyone else was going back to school today, too, so I agreed.
After an ice cream cone, of course.
I woke up in my normal bed, not my bunk bed with Naomi. I frown slightly. Naomi and I don't go to the same school, so I'm really sad.
I get up and quickly pick an outfit for school. It's a black turtle neck tucked into my blue jeans and a rain jacket. I slip on my Nike trainers and start for the stairs. It's obvious my mom is gone with my sisters, so I just feed the cat and get on with my life.
I serve myself a bowl of cereal and try to eat as much possible before I grab my backpack and head for the bus stop. My suit is in a secret pocket in my backpack so if I need to change I'll have it ready.
The bus came to a screeching halt and the doors opened with a mighty heave. I climb on and start to do the homework i haven't been able to do. I'm halfway through when the bus comes to a stop in front of the school. I put away my pencil and paper and zip up my back pack then climb off the bus. I walk up the bus rider steps, making my way through the crowds of people like I've done it a million times before.
I made my way over to the Underworld and got to my locker. I fumbled with it for a second, then it popped open and let me put my books inside. After finishing my locker, I locked it again and walked into my homeroom class. I set down my stuff on my desk and try to ignore people staring at how my hair looks.
I also make a mental note to say "I told you so" to Naomi.
Mathew switches places with Marcos so we can talk, since we're the only ones who go to the academy at this school. Or so we think.
Then class starts and everything goes fine and dandy. My teacher explains algebraic expressions and how they work and we do a group activity.
Up until I hear a ticking noise.
I look under my desk and see - you guessed it! - a bomb ticking its life away under my desk. I clear my throat to get my teacher's attention. She ignores me. I cough. No response.
"There's a bomb under my desk!" I shout at my teacher. That's the spot. My classmates turn to look at me with faces of fear. My teacher herds everyone out of the classroom except Mathew and me.
I pick at the bomb with my fingernails, but I can't get it to unstick from my desk. I try to zap it, but that doesn't work either. I hold my breath for a second then exhale. The timer says 46 seconds. I make up my mind.
"Mathew, get to the back of the classroom!" I say, running to the back and placing a chair in front of me. He follows and does the same. I hear the ticking noise stop and I brace myself. When nothing happens, I start to get up.
Big mistake.
The bomb goes off and presses me against the wall. My body gets covered in chairs. A metal chair leg hits me in the head and I am so very sure a bruise will pop up there. After everything dies down, I stumble to my feet. The bomb tore a hole in the roof and absolutely destroyed the front of the room. Mathew helps me up and pulls me over to the door. Our teacher opens it from the outside and we fall into the hallway. The nurse is here, and she bandages Mathew's arm and my head. A news broadcaster comes onto the scene.
"What are your names, kids?" he asks. We both answer. The reporter turns to the camera again with a serious face.
"These kids have just survived a bomb attack by Flame, and we are waiting to see who shows up," the reporter says. Mathew and I nod to the camera, then watch the news from my phone. My principal is getting interview again, and it's not going very well.
"How do you react, sir?" an anchor says. The principal turns to her, his face red like a tomato.
"I-" he drops a lot of curse words, "kids need to follow protocol. It's not our fault!" He justifies, his three chins shaking in unison with his head.
"Will they still go to their regular classes?" the news anchor tried again, shrinking away from the principal slightly.
"O' course!" he bellowed back, pointing one very unsavory finger at the camera. I sighed. I continued to my next class and tried to ignore what had happened.

Fifth period came incredibly quick today. Kaira was glaring at me the entire time, though she didn't get near me. I almost wanted to stick my tongue out at her.
When class ended, I almost forgot to go to gym because of the happenings in my life right now. I got there and changed into my gym clothes casually.
Two girls about the same age as me came up to me while I was tying my shoes. I smiled at the twins and got up to walk into the gym. They followed me.
"May I help you?" I asked, confused. The girls snickered and shook their heads.
"We know your secret," they sang. I cocked an eyebrow.
"Ha, ha, real funny. Go back to your own locker," I told them, edging away slowly. Their eyes turned black.
"We are the Sororibus. You will bow!" they shouted in unison.
"Woah, woah, woah, calm down," I said, scanning the room for any other people. Seeing no one, I shocked the Sororibus as hard as I could without making a lot of noise. It yowled and threw me back wards with its... tail- hand? I zapped it again, this time harder and it fell to the floor.
Someone had sent these two to kill me. But these were just the warm-ups.
