Chill - Chapter 1

I opened my eyes to my cat's little pink nose in my face. I groaned and sat up, stretching out my arms and yawning. My alarm clock hadn't gone off yet, so I just reached out a hand and zapped it so it would snooze. I lifted my covers off my body and stepped off my bed. My feet landed in my blue fluffy slippers cozily and I stood up. Walking over to my curtains, I noticed a note on my desk. After pulling the curtains open, I sat down in the chair at my desk and picked up the note while spinning boredly. The note was scrawled in my mom's cursive handwriting.

Elizabetha,

Breakfast is on the table. I'm driving your sisters to school. Fend for yourself.

P.S: Remember to feed the cat

Love, Mom

I dropped the sticky note back on my desk and sauntered downstairs. I almost tripped my self on the stairs, but I caught myself before I could.

There was a bowl of cereal lying on the table, and I fetched the milk from the fridge. I set it on the table then opened up a fresh can of cat food. I heard a meow behind me and turned around to see Thunder again, this time next to her bowl. I smiled.

"Thunder, calm down, girl," I laugh as I place the food in her bowl. She hungrily licks it up. I turn back to my food and sit at the table, pouring the milk into my bowl and spooning it into my mouth. I finish quickly and stand up to put my bowl in the sink.

After I finish rinsing it, I rush back upstairs to change. I pick out some grey leggings and a black t-shirt with a red t-rex on the front holding a clamper with a green dinosaur head on the tip saying "I am unstoppable". I pulled it over my head, put on my pants, and pluck a jacket from my hangers, then rushed back downstairs.

I grab my back pack from the chair and walk out side, closing and locking my door behind me. When I got outside, a rush of cold November air hit me and I shivered. It was chilly outside and I pulled my jacket tighter around my body. I got to the bus stop and sat down at the bench, trembling a bit. The bus finally arrived and I climbed on cautiously.

I sat down quietly and waited for Kim to get on. When he didn't, I sighed and looked out the window. Of course he wouldn't come. It was a Thursday, one of his car-riding days.

I was watching the trees pass by when I saw a flash of bright red light. I rubbed my eyes and sat up in my seat. The bus had gained speed and I didn't see it anymore. I sighed and concluded I must be seeing things so I laid back in my seat. Then I noticed the bus was picking up more speed and I tentatively stood up. I walked up to the front of the bus, griping the seats for support.

As I opened my mouth to complain to the bus driver, I saw that there wasn't one. There was just a metal stick pushing on the gas pedal, making us go faster and faster. I screamed.

"Everyone! Get off the bus! Go for the emergency exits!" I yelled at them. Several people tried to open the doors or windows, but they were all jammed. Melted together. I tried the main door, but it was also stuck.

All of a sudden, we heard a banging on the top of the roof. A figure dressed in red appeared to be flying alongside the school bus. We recognized it as one of our city's supervillains, Flame. The footsteps on the roof still continued, and we all huddled together, hoping it wasn't another bad guy. Then suddenly I flew forward from the impact of us stopping, my back hitting the windshield, cracking the glass but not falling outside. A figure, this one with black clothing had stopped us. I tried to stand up to see what was happening and felt myself tip forward. The windshield was cracked, the view looking out to a raging river below us. I soundlessly gasped and tried to walk backward, but slipped on the glass. I felt blood trickle down my back at a steady pace, and my vision was blurred. The fighting sounds continued and I vaguely saw that Flame was losing, but the bus was sliding forward.

The back door of the bus swung open and the figure with black on was pulling people out slowly. When he was finished with everyone but me and another girl, he picked her up from a seat I felt the bus lurch forwards as he lifted her out. He screamed something to me, but I couldn't hear him over the laughing of Flame in my ears. The bus finally flew forward, sending me hurtling towards the river. I felt my weight leave me as I plummeted to my death, and I felt pretty calm. I closed my eyes and waited for the impact, but it never came.

I felt my weight rush back to me as I was caught. The calmness slowly eroded from my mind and sirens went off inside my brain. I opened my eyes to a blurry masked face and a cliff face. The events came back to me, and my eyes shot open and I looked down. Yup, still levitating over a rapidly flowing river. The masked figure flew upwards until we got back to the pavement and I tried to wriggle out of its arms.

"Nope. I'm giving you to the ambulance," the figure said. I noticed the voice was masculine, yet young. He was about my age.

"B-But there's other kids that need it more than I do!" I groaned silently. The boy chuckled lightly.

"You're a trooper, we get it. You were in the worst condition out of all of them and you still insist on taking care of the others. Gimme a break," he joked, carrying me bridal-style to the ambulance. A nurse greeted us there and told the super how bad I was.

"See ya," he said when she was finished, flying off. The nurse took an EpiPen from a cabinet and stuck it into my arm. I winced and felt myself getting groggy. A few seconds later, I fell asleep.
