The force of his body, pushing past the raging waters. The waves crash against him and pull him down, deeper into its dark depths. Gasping for air as he reaches above the water's surface, seeing the light, blinding him. His lungs burn and his limbs ache, but that doesn't stop him from pushing through to the end. Surfacing once again, gasping for air as he sees himself finishing first before the rest of the swimmers. Without looking at the scoreboard, Rin Matsuoka lifts himself out from the waters, knowing, once again, that he had won yet another swimming competition. Pushing past the rest of the swimmers, he just heads to the commentator's desk, straight for the grand prize money. Ignoring his friend's calls and his school's cheers, he walks away from the chaos and into the locker room to gather his possessions. Sighing out loud, he hides the money in his bag, before sprinting off to the one place he visits every day but is stopped by his friends. Agitated by the fact that he's wasting time, Rin pushes past them, snarling. His friends call after him, worried but also mad at the way he treated them. Gou watches his brother once again, ignoring her. Her eyes narrow and lips thin as sadness blooms in her.
The next day at school, Gou, Rei, Nagisa, Haru, and Makato all try to find Rin. They search around the school halls to see him in the cafeteria. Rin sits there, staring at the table, his hands into fists. Tears continue to drip down his cheeks, not knowing that his friends were approaching him. Gou, Rei, Nagisa, Haru and Makato all confront Rin, shocked to see the hardcore swimmer to be crying. Rin quickly wipes his tears away, snarling at his friends unintentionally. They all ask him questions but Rin retaliates in anger.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" They all jump in shock, as they watch their red-haired friend run off with his backpack. They all frown, Gou almost in tears to see her brother in pain. She just wanted to help him, ever since he was acting like this two years back. Gou knew something happened for him to act like this. To turn away from his friends and her. To be filled with anger and sadness. But she didn't know what, or the rest of his friends. The group spent the first half of the school day, trying to find Rin but to see him nowhere on the school grounds. The group all sigh in defeat, heading out to the swimming pool.
"There's something wrong with him." Gou mumbles, her hands in her laps.
"He doesn't come to the swim club anymore." Nagisa whines out, pouting as Rei rubs his back.
"I don't even see him much in school anymore. He normally goes out during breaks or leaves quickly when school is over." Rei points out, trying to figure everything out.
"Maybe we should just ask him?" Makato frowns but Gou sighs.
"I did, so many times. Everyone else did as well. He just doesn't want to tell us." Gou explains, sighing in defeat. Haru stays quiet, not an unusual trait to everyone else knowing that he was always like this. But Haru was quiet for a reason. He knew what was going on with Rin. Why he was ignoring everyone, using up all his time outside of school, not coming to the swim club and especially pushing himself harder for first place when winning grand prize money at the swimming competitions. Rin was trying to save someone's life. A life that was dear to him. Haru frowns, the emotion deeply expressed on his face, shocking everyone that was sitting with him at the table by the pool. Haru deeply apologises to Rin in his mind, but he couldn't keep this secret anymore, couldn't hide it knowing that he and the rest of Rin's friends could maybe try to help him.
"There is something I need to show you." Haru says.
The school bell rang some time ago, signaling lunch break. Some students start to walk home for lunch like they do every day, except for a group of friends that were following their red-haired, shark teeth like swimmer. They follow him enter a shop a few blocks away from school and talking to what seems like the manager of the shop. It looked like to be a cafe and the friends watch through a window, trying to stay out of sight. They watch Rin nod at the manager before grabbing an apron and tying up his hair away from his face. Rin starts to clean the tables, wiping away any debris or dust before the lunchtime rush hour arrived. He quickly places out the pastries and cakes out in the display, warming up the coffee machines. He sighs out, as the first few customers enter, the rush hour beginning. His fellow colleagues and him serve the people, taking down orders and placing down their orders on the tables.
Rin's friends enter the shop quietly and sit in a booth from afar in the shadows, disguised as customers, an idea by Nagisa. Frowns and curious eyes watch his every move, Rin's voice monotone and his eyes dull. They watch him work harder than any of his other colleagues. Wiping the tables, taking orders, serving food, serving those at the registration desk, cleaning the floor, the windows, and the bathrooms. They all watch in awe as this continues until the rush hour starts to diminish. Rin's boss comes out, smiling at him softly, sadness in his eyes as he hands Rin three envelopes. The group all eye the packages, curious to what the contents were. His boss pats him on his shoulder, as the rest of his colleagues all smile sadly at him.
"I hope she gets better soon Rin." Rin nods before taking the apron off and grabbing his belongings after putting the envelopes safely tucked inside his bag. His friends follow him once again as he runs off out of the shop.
"Who's she?" Gou asks, the others nodding as Haru leads the way.
"Why is he working so hard like this?" Nagisa asks as Haru continues to stay quiet. They follow Haru to a random house.
"Who's house is this?" Rei asks, pushing up his glasses onto his nose. Rin turns around, thinking he heard his friends to see nothing since they were hiding in a nearby bush. Rin's friends watch him as he knocked on the door, an elderly woman coming out to greet him sweetly. They talk for a while until he goes to the lawnmower by the doorway. Shocked, his friends watch him mow the lawn, quickly and efficiently. Some time passes by and Rin finishes, the elderly women giving him an envelope. Rin checks the contents and his eyes widen, turning back to the lady. His friends struggle to listen to their conversation, trying to not get themselves seen.
"This is too much." Rin exclaims as the lady shakes her head.
"I will give you more tomorrow. Go save her." The elderly lady smiles as Rin smiles sadly and suddenly hugs her. They break apart and Rin starts to walk away, not before waving back at the lady. His friends continue to follow him to another house a few blocks down from the previous one. They watch from the other side of the road as Rin knocks on the door to be greeted by children around the age of 13. They hug him, making him fall over as a couple walks out to greet Rin. They talk for a while until the couple walks to their car and enters, leaving Rin, to what seems like babysitting. The children and Rin enter the house and the group quickly cross the road to hide behind some trees.
"What is he doing in there?" Nagisa asks, confused as he tries to peak through an open window.
"Nagisa, you look like a stalker right now." Rei looks down at him as Nagisa laughs lowly.
"We all look like stalkers right now." Gou exclaims, watching as her brother comes out and starts doing chores around the house. Cleaning the windows, raking up leaves, mowing the lawn, throwing the garbage in the bin and washing the driveway. Rin enters back inside the house and the group of friends sees a room light up. Through the window, they see Rin putting the children to sleep, reading them a book. The children suddenly get up to pass him their piggy banks. Rin tries to give it back but the children shake their head. The couple comes back home when Rin was able to put the children to sleep. Exiting the house, the couple hand Rin two envelopes. Rin's eyes widen, trying to give one back but is stopped by the couple.
"You need this money more than we do." The man exclaims, smiling down at his wife and at Rin.
"I hope it all turns out well in the end." The woman smiles, seeing how the power of love can make any person do courageous things for the ones they love. Rin smiles sadly, thanking them before walking off again. waving goodbye to the couple.
"What does he need the money for?" Makato frowns, thinking that his friend might be in some sort of financial crisis. Haru shakes his head as if reading his thoughts. The sun starts to set and the group of friends follow Rin to a hospital. Haru knows, that he has to explain everything to his friends now as they watch him enter the hospital. They continue to follow him, Haru stopping them as Rin gets permission from the nurse to enter the patient's ward. Haru walks up to the nurse as she smiles at him, recognising him but not the group of people behind him.
"Go right ahead Haru. You can visit (y/n)." Haru nods and Nagisa, Gou, Rei, and Makato follow behind him, all wondering who this (y/n) is. Walking through the ward, they stop in front of room 0183. Haru turns to them, signaling for them to keep quiet as he slowly opens the door. The group all gasp softly seeing Rin cry by your bedside, holding onto your hand as you slept. Haru closes the door, telling the group the story of (y/f/n).
Rin continues to cry, holding on to your hand for dear life. You continue to sleep not knowing what was happening around you. Rin takes in a deep breath, trying to stop the endless tears. He had given the money he earned today to the doctors, but it still wasn't enough. It still wasn't enough to pay for your treatments, to stop the hospital from pulling your life support plug. The deadline was coming faster than Rin wanted to. He just wished that time would stop, just wished that you didn't get hit by that oncoming truck. Now you lay there, motionless and stuck in your endless coma, never to have woken a day after that accident for two years now.
"H-hey (y/n)." Rin whispers out, beginning to recite his day, hoping you would hear him. He left out the bad parts of his day and just told you the good, sometimes making things up. Rin would visit you every day after his jobs. He never missed a day, somethings skipping school altogether to spend the whole day with you. He wouldn't leave your side, sleeping in the chair next to your bed until the next morning where he was forced to leave by the nurses. He couldn't function without you, without hearing your voice. Without hearing you laugh, squeal or even just hum. It was too quiet, too dull. You lit up his world, you were the light to his darkness.
Rin wanted to see your eyes open again, to stare at him with your bright (e/c) eyes. To smile at him with those lips you used to kiss him with, the love you once showed him. To hold his cheek, grazing it with your thumb and kiss his nose like you did before. Rin sighs, getting up and staring at your face, smiling sadly. He leans over, kissing your forehead, entwining your fingers with his, feeling your warmth. Rin leans his forehead on yours, his eyes closed whispering those three words he repeated every day to you. Tears spring in his eyes, hearing your heartbeat, remembering the first time he had met you.
Rin was new to the school, transferring from Sano Elementary School to Iwatobi High School. You weren't in his classes but you and Rin saw each other around the school halls but never talked to each other. When you and Rin first officially met, you were swimming in the pool so early in the morning, before school even started. Rin was amused at how you just floated on top, what looked like you being asleep. Rin was by the pool so he could get a swim before the others but came and saw you. Walking up to the pool, he stood by the ledge as you floated by, eyes still closed.
"And I thought no one could love the water as much as Haru." Rin smirked as you screamed in fright, losing your balance in the water before going under. Rin watched as you didn't surface back up for a while, shifting his weight from foot to foot. He got worried and dived in, to see you unmoving in the water. Panicked, he lifted you up to the surface and out of the pool on to the ground. He checked your heart beat, seeing if you were still alive. He checked for wounds, cursing himself for killing an innocent and beautiful girl like you. Rin pumped your chest and was about to give you mouth to mouth when you shot open your eyes, scaring the poor red-haired before pushing him into the pool. You were laughing so hard, clutching your stomach as Rin rose to the surface, frowning at you. He got out of the pool as you were still laughing. You calmed down for a bit before laughing again, causing the shark teethed swimmer to roll his eyes at you.
"Sorry, sorry. Not sorry." You gasp out, straightening your back to face Rin, still grinning.
"Very funny smartass." Rin grumbles out, getting his towel to dry himself off.
"You were the one to approach me first, scaring me." you point out hearing Rin grumble under his breath. You get your towel, drying yourself off before sticking your hand out to Rin. He looks at it then looks at you smiling. He grins before shaking your hand and then pulling you into the water. You shriek out, resurfacing to see Rin laughing. You laugh along with him, spraying him with water.
"Rin." you look at him weirdly. "My name is Rin." He smiles at you.
"The names (y/n). Nice to meet you." You look to the other side of the pool and look back at Rin.
"Wanna race?" Rin grins at you, thinking he would win.
"Let's make a bet. First to swim to the other side and back wins. The loser buys Ice-cream." You nod, grinning.
"Sure." getting ready at the starting point, the both of you swim off. In the end, Rin got his ego crushed by you, him buying you ice-cream.
Rin was brought back to the present when he heard the door creak. His eyes widen when he sees his friends entering one by one. He frowns, glaring at Haru for telling them. They all look at Rin, frowning that their friend didn't confide in them about his problem. Gou walks up to her brother as he looks to face you again, not wanting to look at his sister. He feels her arm on his shoulder, giving it a squeeze.
"I would have loved for her to be my sister-in-law." Gou whispers, smiling lightly, Rin smiling softly. He looks back at her sister, the tears spilling.
"It's not enough." Rin whispers out as Gou hugs him, resting his head on her shoulder.
"We all will help." Rei walks forward, smiling softly. Nagisa smiles as well, a plan already forming in his head.
"We'll use the swim club funds." Haru and Makato nods.
"We will get the students in school to help as well." Makato says softly. Rin only cries harder, his exterior breaking.
