Setting: The group is sitting in a cozy corner of a trendy New York City café. The city's sounds filter in through the windows, creating a lively backdrop. Maddie sits with her legs crossed, sipping an iced coffee with an annoyed expression, her red heels tapping impatiently against the floor. Katherine sketches absentmindedly in a small notebook, while Natasha, leaning back in her chair with her hoodie up, scrolls through her phone. Tommy tunes his violin, seated casually beside them, occasionally plucking a string.
Maddie: (rolling her eyes, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder) "Jerry's a goddamn robot. He can't process emotions like us. It's like talking to a wall of equations."
Katherine: (not looking up from her drawing, her voice calm and thoughtful) "Perhaps you're judging poor Jerry too harshly. Granted, he acts like some sort of computer program, but I think deep down, he's someone who really struggles with basic emotions."
Maddie: (huffs and crosses her arms) "I get that, Katie, but I still hate how dismissive he was at the party yesterday. I was trying to tell him about Matthew breaking up with me, and he just... brushed it off. Like it was some trivial problem that didn't deserve attention. He didn't even look up from his stupid Rubik's cube!"
Natasha: (not lifting her gaze from her phone, her tone dry yet with a hint of understanding) "Sometimes... I relate to Jerry more than I'd like to admit. He's arrogant, dismissive, and a total brat. But if I'm honest, there's a vulnerability in him that we haven't seen yet. You know how it is when you've got walls up. We all hide behind something." (She sets her phone down, glancing at Maddie, who fidgets uncomfortably at the sudden depth in Natasha's words.)
Tommy: (chiming in, soft yet firm, as he lightly strums his violin string) "Simmer down, everyone. Jerry's not heartless. He's just... different. Doesn't mean he doesn't care in his own way. Sometimes, we just need to meet him halfway." (His British accent gives a gentle rhythm to his words, trying to ease the tension.)
Maddie: (sighing, swirling her iced coffee distractedly) "I know, I know... but it's like he doesn't even try. And when he's like that, it makes me feel like my problems are stupid."
Natasha: (shrugs, pulling her hoodie down slightly) "He's not exactly the guy to offer a shoulder to cry on, Maddie. But I've seen him stick around when things get real. He's just... calculating. Emotion's not his language. Doesn't mean he's indifferent."
Katherine: (finally looking up from her sketch, her eyes soft but serious) "It's true, Maddie. Jerry processes things differently. But that doesn't mean he's incapable of caring. He just... doesn't know how to express it the way we do."
Maddie: (gives a reluctant nod, staring out the café window) "I guess. But still, sometimes I just want to smack him when he starts talking like he's reading from an encyclopedia."
Tommy: (grinning slightly, tuning the last string on his violin) "Well, you know Jerry. Always has a fancy word for everything. He's probably more rattled than he lets on."
Before anyone can respond, Jerry walks in, his leather jacket buttoned neatly, a sly smile on his face as he approaches the table.
Jerry: (casually as he slides into an empty chair, raising an eyebrow) "What's the buzz? Talking about me? Good things, I hope?"
The group falls silent for a moment. Maddie stiffens, her cheeks flushing slightly, but Natasha barely reacts, eyeing him with her usual calm exterior. Tommy exchanges a knowing look with Katherine.
Katherine: (softly, trying to break the tension) "Nothing you'd be interested in, Jerry. Just... emotions." *(She shoots a quick look at Maddie, who looks away.)
Jerry: (chuckling, running a hand through his slicked-back hair) "Ah, yes. Emotions. Tricky little things, aren't they?" (He grabs a sugar packet from the table and flicks it with his fingers.) "Good thing I've got all of you to teach me about them."
Maddie: (murmuring under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear) "Couldn't hurt to pay a little more attention once in a while, Jerry."
Jerry leans back, sensing the edge in Maddie's voice but only smirking.
Jerry: (playfully) "What can I say, Maddie? I'm a machine built for logic." (He taps his temple, a half-smile playing on his lips.) "But I'll make a note to upgrade my emotional software... just for you."
The table exchanges glances. Maddie tries to suppress a smile despite herself, and Tommy gives Jerry a light-hearted nudge.
Tommy: (teasing, with a grin) "You're hopeless, mate."
