Hondo was a pirate and nothing more.

He showed up in a few Star Wars books and kidnapped Obi-Wan Kenobi more than once. All these times, Kenobi was able to escape.

Kenobi and Ohnaka go way back to when Kenobi was only 18. Though Hondo didn't remember Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan remembered him.
Hondo had a band of pirates on the flames of Flourm and raids the space lines for credits and spice. In the end Hondo ends up aiding the Jedi and saves a planet from Separatist occupation. So, Hondo Ohnaka did become a friend to the Republic and to the Jedi.
