The birthday meeting

Had it been any other day for Miss Nandini Murthy, when excessively overloaded with extra work after office hours, you would have found her in fact, pleased. She'd be found simply maintaining her signature posture while nibbling the graphite pencil occasionally and making scratches here and there on those slightly yellowish sheets spread in absolutely no intention of securing space. They were, of course her designs which in her words occurred to be "Good, but require final touches." If truth to be told, those empty hours of office were nothing but a fascinating chance for her to work with no disturbance while she had borne a whole day with a noisy environment, fully packed with irritating employees. But no, it was quite unfortunate and comes under an anomalous situation that today was certainly not a day when she could have grabbed the alluring opportunity.

Advancing her attention from the design works to the glass door of cabin, she kept staring at the crowdy roads, admiring those people who enjoyed the fun of wandering at streets during a dusk in Mumbai. It made her let out a sigh of despair. However, she grabbed the phone from her purse just to leave a simple and straight "couldn't finish the work due to some personal affairs" message for her boss. Even though she didn't wait for her boss's reply and went offline. Her boss couldn't deny her leave anyway, she rarely demands it. In fact, her boss might get a shock coming with it.

Her eager eyes took another observant look through the window, she took an interest in watching the carefree lives of people. It provided her an odd form of satisfaction. Sounds weird, right? she didn't like the big familiar crowd she had in the office, but she liked those unknown individuals who randomly walked through the road at different phases of the day. Nevertheless, the familiarity did not matter to her. She just liked watching happy souls from a distance where the sight of those couldn't reach her, couldn't sense her existence.

Nandini leisurely stood up from her chair, it was time. He must be waiting for her.She carelessly pushed her belongings into her leather purse. Leaving the building, Nandini found herself at the main gate in few minutes.

The guard provided her with a respectful salute while she returned it with curt nod. Most of the Office staffs saw her with high regards, even the jealous ones. She held an arrogant, authoritative and workaholic personality for the whole world. Although It wasn't her mysterious nature that earned her respect, her talent and dedication did. Honestly, she was the ambitious one, always. Being at a really nice position in her profession currently, as one of the main fashion designers of apparently the top fashion brand company of the country. However, she wasn't satisfied at all with that. She wanted more and that helped her in making up the carrier minded bitch image of hers in front of society.

It was not like, that image was totally fake. But it was not completely true either. And the reason behind this facade was kind of embarrassing for Nandini. She held that image just to dominate people to an extent where they would take her as a rude, arrogant, Narcissistic girl and would not even try to get close and be friends with her. It may form a theory that Nandini is someone who has some certain severe disliking towards friends. But the truth is, in fact, she used to love friends at a time. It is the circumstances that made her too socially awkward to get along with pals. Yet despite this, there's still that happy go lucky Nandini exists somewhere in one deep corner of her heart and hardly makes it's presence visible. She knows it though. And the second as well as the last person to know it, is her best/only friend, Dr. Anurag Basu.

Approximately five years ago, when Nandini met Anurag as her appointed psychiatrist , she couldn't catch a single hint that, the most irritating doctor she has ever met would gradually become her best friend. But just have a look at today. Here she was, bunking her most precious time of office just to celebrate his birthday.

Yes, today was Anurag's 28th birthday. And they had planned alot for this occasion. Rather, Anurag has planned alot. For some undiscovered cause he didn't even let Nandini buy the cake, let alone planning the evening. The only detail she knew was, that she had to meet him at Euphoria ( the cafe) by 7pm. And that's exactly what she was doing right now, barking at her driver to speed up the car as it was already late.

"Anil faster! It's already 6:47. Have you forgotten that you have to make me reach there by 7, you idiot!" Nandini shouted.

Although the raging voice was enough to scare the shit out of anybody, however, Anil was not that much bothered. He was used to this impatient nature of Nandini, he simply replied,"Ma'am don't worry. We would definitely reach there by 7."

"We better do you moron!" Nandini mocked and turned her gaze towards the road.

Nandini was actually looking forward to this evening, excitedly. And that, was rare. A mischievous smiled played on her face..

* * * * * * *

"Sir, would you like to order something?"a waitress in her mid 30's dressed in the work uniform asked Anurag with a formal smile.

"No, thanks. I am good," Anurag replied with a similar curve of lips. This was the third time in a row, for this waitress to ask Anurag the same question over and over again. But of course, the waitress could not be blamed at all for this. One cannot help but get irritated when someone keeps sitting in a caffe for nearly one hour and denying to give order if asked.

But Anurag was certainly not in a mood to eat. He was waiting for someone, restlessly. It was his birthday, the most special one ; and he had planned alot for this. In fact, it took all of his courage to plan this for her. He had taken another look at his writst watch. It's 7:30. Where is she? Did something happened to her? He wondered if she had forgotten his birthday due to workload. It's not that impossible actually, when her workaholic nature is kept in mind.

Anurag knew the best, that how deeply she was devoted to her work. She often might loose herself too when designing. He sighed heavily, if she does not appear in next five minutes ; he's gonna drive to her office. Not just to remind her about his very well planned birthday, but also to check on her. She can be too careless at times.

Tiptoeing his fingers on the white marble table for another minute, Anurag decided to leave finally. He leisurely stood up and took a glance around him. Most of the customers were couples and were most probably on a coffee date. Anurag guessed that quite easily, you know it when you observe lovely young pairs too lost in each other to realize the world around them exists. Shoving his hands in pockets, he chuckled for a moment. Teen romance, he was fascinated to it since forever. So deeply he wished to experience it when he was in college. But then you should know that Anurag Basu is not a person suitable for flings. He certainly would not take those hundreds of girls, who claimed to be in hopeless and unconditional love with him from college days in account. He would simply receive those uncountable red roses and love letters everyday and would just simply keep them in a isolated corner of his room. And when would be asked that why did he kept those for, he would give his most most charming grin and mumble, "you should not disrespect someone's emotions". That was Anurag Basu at those times, the sweetheart of the college. Even now, it's just his physique which has grown up and it's his profession, which has caused him to maintain a serious nature. Otherwise, he's that same mumma's boy.

It was that very moment when he stopped grinning, something odd had caught her eyes; that waitress. She was looking at him with a pleased smirk on her white face. It seemed she was celebrating his disparture from the caffe. Oh of course! Anurag realized. She had to be the most happy soul, after knowing that he'll be leaving now.

Rolling his eyes, he again sat on the chair. That waitress's face fell immediately when she saw it coming. Her pretty white face scrunched in displeasure. Anurag glanced victoriously at her, making her move irritatedly to the caffe kitchen. Huh! I'm gonna irritate you much more than this you simply over-irrirated-for-no-reason white fat woman, he showed her his tongue mentally.

Realizing what he had just did, Anurag had a hard time controlling his outrageous laugh. Why does he behaves so childish at times? If she were here, he was sure, she would have rolled her eyes irritatedly and said, "what are you Anurag? Five? Stop behaving so childish." But Anurag would not have bothered at all. Although most of the time he has to hold his sincere doctor's image, he likes being carefree at times. He was sure, that there was no rule where it was scripted that adults were not allowed to be nonchalant and have fun. After all every human being is different from one other. It is not possible for everyone to have similar taste for live. And as per Shakespeare's that popular quote as it was , "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts", of course it is ours choices to choose the part we want to play. Not completely, but slightly it depends on us. You see, if you choose to be bad it's your choice, no one forced you. And if you choose to be good , it's your choice as well. Anurag had chosen the role of a psychiatrist to play on this stage of society, but he also had chosen not to be that typical fruitless adult with absolutely no fun in life one might frame. He liked to modify his character on his own, does not matter if the world opposes him. He liked enjoying every little happiness he could grab, just like a kid. He liked spreading positivity unlike most of the people out there. He loved playing his only unique character. He was indeed an unique soul.

Anurag's grin grew bigger watching a couple getting cozy to each other. Will they kiss? He wondered. How warm will it feel to be kissed? He has never kissed someone in his life, never. But the idea of getting his lips locked with someone's, fascinates him as much as the idea of getting committed does. At the late hours of nights, he would just imagine performing it with her , and blush like a teenager at the end. He could not wait to that now. He's been planning so much for today.

He took another glance at the couple.

They were kissing!

The girl's hand was clenched to the shiny dark brown hairs of the guy, in a strong but gentle grip. Another hand rested at his nape, caressing him with the intensity of the kiss. The guy's both hands were on her waist, gently pulling her closer. Their lips getting mingled in one another's, as if they were drowning in the sweet ocean of love. The occasional sounds of soft smooches had filled the caffe. They both had managed to move the attention of every pair of eyes present their to them. But what made Anurag amazed was, the fact they did not even bother to realize that. They were so lost in themselves, in their love.

And that moment was the one when Anurag knew the kind of love he desired.

The one Unconditional, unintentional, hopless but wholehearted, caring and passionate. The perfect.

For him..

Love , too was the biggest fantasy of his life. He loved the idea of loving someone from the first day he knew what love is.

Love is such a strengthful emotion, he thought. How deep two woul-

Anurag could not resume his notions for love, as he heard the very voice he was so restlessly waiting to hear since he arrived.

"Anurag, I'm so sorry! I'm late."

He moved back to witness the very sight he was so anxious to see.

"Nandini."
