Decius impatiently pushed past the other passengers as soon at the ferry docked, disregarding the man who shouted at him to wait his turn.
He made sure that he was the first one ashore, knowing that he was wanted in this city and that he had to leave as soon as possible. He slipped through the numerous people waiting for the boat, blending in as he normally would, keeping watch for any authorities.
Nobody seemed to notice him until he caught sight of a dark-skinned man staring right through him. He didn't recognise him as an authoritarian figure, but he did notice the bulk of weapons concealed within the long dark coat similar to his own. This man was equipped to kill, and by the way that he was glaring at him, Decius had a bad feeling about what was going to happen next.
He quickly summoned his magic, his blue eyes igniting with his raw power. He cast a veil over himself, a trick that hid his identity from any onlooker. Despite the disguise, he couldn't shake the man's menacing gaze.
He knew he couldn't run. That would draw attention and he didn't need to be in the situation where someone alerted the authorities of his presence. Instead, he kept his eyes connected with the man's brown ones, watching for any movement from him.
He watched as the man reached into his coat, and although Decius didn't want to have to wait around to find out what the man was grabbing, he needed to be prepared for whatever was coming.
He eyed the hand that was submerged in the coat pocket, and was becoming impatient as it was drawn out slowly, taunting him. As soon as Decius saw the gun, he dashed towards the man, his speed enhanced due to his power. The man seemed startled by his approach and raised the weapon. It was only a second before he fired, his aim true.
But the bullet didn't even touch Decius. He slid to a halt a few paces from the older man and held out his hands, summoning his magic. A strange blue mist foreign to the mysterious man began to swirl around Decius' hands, ensnaring the bullet mid-flight. He flicked a finger and the bullet dropped, rendered useless.
The two men stared intensely at each other for a few seconds, ignoring the innocents around them who had just witnessed an attempted murder.
"What the hell?" The man asked, disbelieving.
"I could ask you the same thing," Decius seethed, "why are you trying to kill me?"
"So you don't know who I am?" He snapped in response.
"Obviously not." Decius sighed. "You clearly don't know what happens to criminals in this city. Maybe you'll get to find out in a minute."
As if on cue, there were angry shouts, and both men turned to see a horde of officers advancing on them, eyes trained on the gun that was still exposed to the late morning air.
"Tell me who you are and why you want to kill me and I can get you out of here. Decide quickly, because they're after me too and I can leave any time I like, with or without you." Decius announced to the man, who looked ready to shoot the incoming officers.
Laurenz turned to Decius, still slightly confused at what he had just witnessed, but needing to think quickly. "Why can't I just kill them?" He fumed, trying to find a way out of giving away his identity in order to escape.
"More will come, they'll execute you." Decius growled.
"Fine. My name is Laurenz Marcello, I'm a bounty hunter and I've been sent here to kill you. Get me out of here or I'm going to kill everyone in the vicinity."
Decius's eyes narrowed. "Why should I trust you?"
Laurenz thought about the question for as long as he could, but the officers were getting dangerously close.
"I choose life over money." He spat, itching to run. He didn't want to be caught. He refused to be caught.
"That's good enough for me," Decius exclaimed, nodding, "let's get out of here, shall we?"
With that, he grabbed onto the bounty hunter's shoulder, and focused on where he wanted to go.
The Great Lake. He told himself, picturing the crystalline waters and rolling hills.
As he locked on to his destination, the first officers were reaching out to them, but they were too late.
There was a blinding blue light, and the two men were gone.
