          I was curled up on the sofa reading a thick fiction book with a bowl of popcorn on one side. It was late in the evening and the room was occupied with dead silence. Only the sound of the air-conditioner and the sound of flipping pages were present.

          During these days, I had to say that I improved in controlling my feelings. Somehow, I got over my mother's death and I had blended in with most people. The new me was here, and I was proud of myself.

            Suddenly, there was a rapid knock on my door with several impatient ringings of the bell. I got up quickly and opened the door, and was face to face with Lily and her three children. Lily sure looked worried and anxious. Beside her was her two young sons and on her hip was her six month old daughter.

            "Uh, hi Lily. What a nice surprise. I wasn't expecting you" I said, being a little confused. No one usually visits me.

          "Oh, thank god you're here. Charlie, I have to run somewhere and could you look after my babies for a few hours? You can, right? Thanks, Charles. Bye!"

          Lily took off, leaving me to stand puzzled on the doorstep with her three children. Okay, what the hell had just happened? I glanced at the baby in my arms then at the two kid beside me. They looked back at me with their eyes. Oh shit, this is gonna be one hell of a crazy night.....

           "Hey kids... Um, wanna come in?" I say awkwardly. The little miniature human beings entered my apartment and silently sat on the couch. I thought for a moment trying to remember all the names. Yeah, right. Um... The nerdy one is Paul, the sporty one is Kenny and the baby is Isabelle. Okay, what go possibly go wrong? Taking care of humans is easy. Right?

            "Charlie. I'm hungry." Kenny whined.

            "Oh, so you know my name. Ha, wasn't expecting that. So um, yeah food."

            I placed the sleeping little baby on the couch before going to the kitchen to find something edible. Thank god I had some leftover lasagna. Quickly warming it up, I placed it on a plate before feeding the starving kids.

            "So um, has Isabelle eaten too?" I ask the boys. One thing, I have simply never handled a baby before. Second thing, babies are nightmares.

           "I don't know." Kenny replied.

           "She only eats baby food and milk" Paul added.

            Oh shit. I don't have what they call baby food and what if the baby wake up and starts putting on a tantrum? Oh no, how could this possibly happen to me?

             "Charlie. I'm bored." Paul said, a little dramatically.

             "Do you want to watch a movie or play a game?" I asked.

              "Let's play a game" Kenny said with his mouth full of pizza.

             "Okay.... What game do you want to play?"

               "Tic tac toe !"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                "Okay, kids. Time for bed." I said, pointing to the clock. It was already ten and Lily had not called even one single phone call. I couldn't talk to her and all my phone calls went straight to voicemail. Seriously, what kind of mother would leave the children alone in a house with someone they've never been with?
              "When's mummy coming?" Kenny whined, looking at me with his puppy dog eyes.
              "She has a very important appointment so she won't be able to come. However,.... If you guys be clever and go to bed early, there'll be ice cream for you tomorrow morning."
            "Ice cream for breakfast? Wow! Good night, Charlie"
            The boys quickly scurried off to my bedroom and I let out a big sigh of relief. Man, this is tiring. How do even moms survive? Suddenly, I heard a loud cry and quickly turned back. Holy crap, no.....
           I quickly picked up the crying baby and tried to make her quiet. Oh no, what should I do? Uh...
         I walked here and there with Isabelle in my arms, slowly humming some lame old nursery rhymes I remembered. Soon later, she did shut up but didn't feel asleep. Still carrying her, I took a glance into my bedroom and was relieved to find both her brothers asleep.
            I returned to the couch and placed Isabelle on my lap. She looked up at me with her big chocolate eyes as she held my finger in her tiny little hands. Unexpectedly, she gave me a smile.
            And it hit me.
            Memories started flashing down.
             This was the way I smiled at my mom nineteen years ago.
             A smile that lit up her world. And it was mine.
            Now, a kid is smiling up at me. How am I supposed to feel?
            I wouldn't cry in front of a baby, no. Ha, definitely not. I scooped up Isabelle and returned a smile.
            "You know, kid. You're the sweetest child I've ever met." I said with a smile.
            "Baa ba boo blehh!"
             "Yeah, I don't know what you're talking about. Ha ha!"
             We were face to face laughing and smiling at each other. And I could have never been happier. During these depressing months, I haven't laughed heartily in a long time.
              Isabelle kept smiling at me, showing all her baby teeth. She looked so cute and innocent, just like an angel. I played with her for a moment before soothing her to sleep.
             It was now twelve o'clock. Still no sign of their mother. I flopped down on the bed letting out a huge sigh. Suddenly, there was three knocks and a bam on the door. Another goddamn visit.
             Oh hurrah....
             "Ronnie! What the hell are you doing here?" I whisper shouted at her. Ronnie looked seriously drunk and I could tell she had been crying. Her eyes were bloodshot and she was tired.
            "Charlie, I want to talk" she said, slurring her words. I took her to the balcony where we could talk freely without waking up the children.
             "Shit, Ronnie. You smell like alcohol."
              A moment later, Ronnie bursted into tears and I was t there soothing her like every other time. You see, this was normal. Every time she broke up with her boyfriend or she had trouble, she would always come to me. In the reverse situation, no one was there for me when I needed help.
             "Okay, spit it out. What happened?" I asked.
             "Charlie, he cheated! That son of a bitch fucking cheated behind my back! And I was blinded the whole damn time! And the"
             "I know, Ronnie. I know."
              I gave a pat in her shoulder as she cried on me.
             "Seriously, Charlie. Why do you have to be so perfect? You're pretty, not broke, talented, and what else? Actually, you're everything else. I am such a pathetic lousy bitch!"
           "Ha, Ronnie. You think I'm perfect. Poof, how silly of you."
           "No, don't poof me! I'm right, you have no trouble in the world and I'm here feeling like crap. I"
            "Ron, shut up."
            "No, seriously you-"
             "Ronnie, shut the FUCK up and listen to me! I have no life. No life at all. I have no father, my mother fucking died, my only family betrayed me, no one ever stay by my side. And what? I'm perfect? I had five cuts on my wrists, Ron. FIVE god damn cuts. What you have is just a break up, seriously snap the crap outta it!"
             I had no idea I was crying until I felt my cheeks wet. Oh fuck, I feel horrible. My friend had come to me for consolation and I was here crying now instead of her. Great. Just great.
           "Charlie. I'm sorry"
           "Ugh, just let it be. You can sleep in the couch, Lily's kids are in the room"
           "Goodnight, Charles."
           "G'night"
