Chapter 24
*12 days later*
Nya's POV
"Stop moving," I instruct Jay, my hands weaving the strands of his auburn hair into little braids. There's not enough to do a big one, so I have to make several little braids.
"But it's hard sitting still," he whines, trying to grab a chip while keeping the rest of his body still. It's another one of our movie nights, but this time, we chose a detective movie. It's a nice switch from our usual horror movie or Starfarer.
"I'm almost done," I reassure him, moving one group of hair over the other. After about thirty more seconds, I tie it up and finish. "Now, you can come back up here."
He leaves the braids in, moving up to the couch, putting his arm is around my shoulders. I lean into his shoulder. "The culprit is totally the guy who brought the case in. Look at how smug he is," Jay points out.
"But why would he bring the case to the best detective in town? I understand that it would make him look less suspicious cause he brought it up, but wouldn't he have brought it to a worse detective?" I reason. "I think that it's actually the waitress. She has that one evil look in her eye I've only ever seen Harumi have."
"Speaking of Harumi, where are her and Kai tonight?"
"They're on a date, which is probably going to result in her and Kai showing up around ten and disappearing into his room and making a lot of noise," I answer honestly. He cringes.
"They won't care that you're sitting right here?" he asks. I shake my head.
"If anything, it seems like they're always louder when they know I'm in the house," I shiver, thinking about the countless times I've had to stop doing what I'm doing to leave once I hear them.
"That's nasty. Do you want popcorn?" he switches the subject, grabbing the bowl that we popped from the table.
"No thanks," I go back to watching the movie. Now, the detective is an a deserted ally, needing to meet up with a local thug to get the information needed to complete his case. He's nervous, but is also confident in his skills.
"This is about to get good."
---
"Haha, I told you it was the waitress!" I sit up in victory since I can't jump up. "It was the sneaky look that she gave. That's the look of a snake."
"Okay, but imagine how shocking it would've been if it was the guy who brought in the case," he laughs. "But you win."
"Thank you, thank you," I fake bow. "Also, can we rain check our board game day tomorrow? I forgot that I promised Skylor I'd go over to her place tomorrow."
"Of course, even though I am going to miss you. Maybe I could work on a truck with my dad."
"Thank you."
"It's nice that you guys are friends now, even if it's a bit odd since she used to be a thing with Kai."
"We bond over disliking Kai," I laugh before I hear a rumble outside. "Speaking of the devil, he's home. Shield your eyes."
Jay looks confused,"Why?"
"Oh, you'll see," I say. As if on cue, Kai and Harumi walk through the door. Once she closes the door behind her, he presses her against the door. He presses his lips against her neck. "Disgusting."
At the sound of my voice, both of their heads snap in our direction. Kai looks slightly embarrassed. His face seems like it's the same color as his shirt. Instead of looking pissed like I expected, Harumi looks neutral, maybe even a little bit relieved.
"Nya, I didn't know you'd be home," Kai awkwardly scratches the back of his neck.
"Where else could I be? I'm in a boot," I look down at my ankle. The doctor gave me the option of a cast or a boot. I opted for the boot, so I could still shower. Even though it's in a boot, I can't walk on it.
"I'll just go," Harumi suggests, turning to leave. Kai shakes his head. He reaches out and grabs her hand.
"It's fine. We can just go to my room," he suggests. With no response, staying neutral, Harumi follows him.
"You're right; I definitely should've shielded my eyes," Jay laughs, but I'm focused on the way Harumi follows Kai as they turn the corner.
"How would you like to be a part of our own little detective movie?" I suggest to Jay, thinking about how passive she's been the past few times I've seen her.
"I'm interested."
"Something's up with Harumi. We're going to find out what that is," I tell him. "She's seemed super uninterested in Kai, which doesn't make sense since she was the one who approached him about getting back together. He can't see it, but she's hiding something."
"How are we going to do that?"
"Follow her. I have a suspicion that she has something she'd rather be doing right now. Instead of leaving in the morning like she usually does, she's going to sneak out," I propose the idea.
"Do we really want to see what she's doing though? I don't know if my eyes are ready to see that."
"I want to. She's spent the past two years micromanaging my life. It's my turn."
---
As expected, Harumi leaves my house early. While Jay and I pretended to sleep, she attempted to sneak through the living room and out the door. She's always been here when I woke up in the morning, but now she's suddenly leaving early.
Now, Jay and I are trailing behind her from a distance in Jay's car. She has find my friends on, so it's extremely easy to follow her. All we need to do is watch where her little icon moves.
"We're entering the sketchy part of town now. If we're going to turn around, now's the time," Jay informs me. I shake my head.
"We've already drove so far. We're already committed."
"Why would she come all the way out here? Maybe she's dealing drugs on the black market, or she's part of a pyramid scheme, or...oh I have a good one! She's in a gang," Jay hypothesizes, making me laugh.
"I doubt it. Harumi's not the gang type. She's a jerk, but she doesn't break the law," I look down at my phone. "Turn right into this neighborhood. Then, take another right. She stopped there."
Listening to my directions, Jay finds the street Harumi's car is parked on. We park several houses down, so we don't look suspicious. She gets out of her car and starts walking to the front door of a house.
The house is small, with a beige exterior. In the front yard, there's a small car and a clunky black van. The house seems to only have one window facing the street along with a single green door.
"Isn't this an invasion of privacy? And what would she do if she caught us?" Jay twiddles his thumbs nervously.
"She won't, and besides, she could be doing something illegal," I justify us being here.
She knocks on the door. After a couple of seconds, the door opens. When I see who is on the other side of the door, my eyes widen. "What is she doing with Lloyd Garmadon?" She starts talking to him, and he closes the door behind him.
"Maybe my gang theory wasn't that wrong after all."
What happens next is the biggest shock I've experienced all year.
---
"Harumi and Lloyd?" Skylor asks, her eyebrows furrowed. She's leaning against her lush purple couch, sipping on a cup of coffee.
"I was shocked too. They just started making out on his front porch, and then she went inside with him," I tell her, sitting on the chair opposite of her. It's like a throne, with large gold armrests and plush purple cushions. Apparently, her dad dad has an affinity towards regal furniture.
"And you're sure it was Lloyd and Harumi?" she verifies. I nod.
"I didn't know what to do when I found out. I knew Kai wouldn't believe me, since I've always hated Harumi. Plus, he shouldn't hear his girlfriend is cheating on him from his little sister. I thought you might have a suggestion."
"Everything makes sense now," she says out loud, mostly to herself. "When I first moved here, we had a cheer initiation sleepover for me, and there Harumi was dared to join the Sons of Garmadon. We all just kind of assumed she quit after joining or didn't join at all, but she's just stayed in it. Not only has she stayed in the gang, but she also started dating the literal son of Garmadon. That's why she's been so distant."
"Do you think Lloyd knows about Kai?" I ask her. She contemplates it for several seconds.
"He has to. He goes to school with us, and she's with Kai at school," she reasons, which makes this whole situation even more complicated.
"She seemed a lot more into kissing Lloyd than Kai, but why would she date Kai at all if she likes Lloyd more? I know she's all about status, but even this is much."
"I'm not sure, but we need to tell Kai. It's not fair to let him get led on like this," she sighs, rubbing her temples.
"Which one of us should do it?"
"I'll do it. He might not believe you, but he'll believe me since I've made it clear to him that I won't talk to him unless it's necessary."
"Thank you, Skylor."
"It's nothing. Now, do you want to play some Just Dance?"
A/N: sorry that this chapter was shorter. I realized I underplanned it, but oh well
I'm getting a new kitten on Tuesday. We built her cat tower today. My mom made a joke that we should make her Nya. She's grey, and Nya DOES have several grey gi's
Online school is also officially done, so heck yeah. I'm trying to stick to at least an every other day updating schedule until the end of the book since I have more time now.
My next story (which will OF COURSE be Ninjago) will be getting put up soon for when I finish this book. I still don't have a title, but I have a general plot down. Seliel IS going to be in it, so you guys don't have to deal with my obviously Jaya biased conya/Jaya love triangle. Plus, the ninja (with exception of one but it'll make sense with the set up) are all going to be friends from the start so yay. It's an AU
I was thinking to make the title schism but I don't know if a lot of people know what that mean, and I didn't want to confuse people. It sounds cool though.
My boyfriend said Nya wasnt a ninja today, and I was sooooooo pissed. She's been a ninja for a majority of the series (which for me is odd to think about since it doesn't feel like it to me) and she doesn't deserve this slander.
Sorry for the long authors notes. I just have a lot to say all the time (whoops). I really appreciate you guys and am happy you all stuck around to keep reading
