Chapter 52
Wavy lines rose from the scortched drab cement that lay out countless miles ahead, a ribbon stretched out along the cracked earth, held in place by the weight of the metal behemoths that slowly trudged along it. Varied colored cocoons filled with people whose frustration with the pace simmered like the air outside, kept in check by the frosty breeze flowing from the vents.
I felt sleepy as I laid my head back on the driver's seat. It's been one hour since I'm stuck in this traffic. I'm on my way to Sanjh's house, don't know why but this time she was behaving a bit weirdly, from the day I came here. Only once she had visited me which is so not like her!! Whenever I called her or asked her to meet me, all she did was to make excuses.
We are leaving tomorrow and I thought today will be perfect to check up on her. I didn't told her that I was visiting her today, I wanted to give her a surprise, but this damn traffic has spoiled my all my happy mood. After last night, I didn't got a chance to talk to Zain, I wasn't exactly upset about it neither I was happy about it.
Once we'll reach back to England, I've decided to tell him the truth regarding my health. It would be upto him then, that what he exactly wanna do about it. My heart says that he loves me but my mind is totally against it. I know he loves me but he just don't wanna confess it. Today when talking with Mama she also said the same thing.
Early in the Morning...
"So did you liked the surprise?" Mama asked stroking my hair. I was resting my head on my Mama's lap.
"Who wouldn't like it, Mama" I replied enjoying her touch.
"Did you both talked?"
"No. He was kind of pissed off!!" I said. She chuckled. "He was bound to get pissed off!!"
"Why?" I asked looking at her
"Can't you see it Hanya, he's jealous" she said smiling.
"Jealous? Of what?"
"Wrong. Of whom?" She said.
"Didn't get you" I said sitting up.
"He's jealous of Sameer" she said laughing.
"Whhaaattt????"
"Yess" she laughed.
"You can't be serious"
"Damn serious, it is very much obvious Hani. Even your dad couldn't control his laughter when he saw the expression on his face." She wiped a tear.
"What exactly happened Mama?"
"We all were happily playing with Adeel when the maid came and said that Zain is here. We were also very much surprised, and he simply said that he wanted to surprise you. Your Dad told him that you were out with Sameer. God, Hani you should have seen his face, it was as if someone has thrown him on the cold floor." She laughed
"Really? Then?"
"Then what, he pretended to be not affected by the fact that you were out with Sameer but at the same time he kept on asking about your whereabouts and when did you went? When will you come? Everytime the doorbell rang, he went to open the door." It was so much fun to see him like that.
I chuckled. "That's why he was behaving a bit weird last night and not to forget the sudden mood change."
"Yes, now you understood Hani. Jealousy is the first step of love. Although he loves you from the begining only, but he's just afraid of losing you!!" Mama said with a lost expression.
"Losing me? What do you mean?" I asked.
"Hani, we're all very much aware of the fact that how madly Zain loved Hareem. But we're not a fool Hani, my hair isn't greyed just like that. The bond that you share with Zain wasn't there with Hareem. Ofcourse he loved her alot but with you he's something else. You only once said that how come he reads my mind? How come he knows what's exactly going inside my head? Hani, dear this wasn't there with Hareem. They were just like an any other married couple, but look at you both Hani, the bond is much more stronger than it was before.
He fear to lose you Hani. He is scared to accept his love for you because he don't want you also to go away from his life too." She said calmly.
My breath hitched.
Does he really feel this way?
"Hani, only you can help him to overcome his fear."
"Mama, I'm always there beside him. Always ready to help him in any manner I can. But if he's not gonna share his feelings, thoughts, how would I know?"
"He will Hani, he will. Mark my words Hani, the day he comes to know the real reason behind your sickness, you will be the one who'll be afraid of facing Zain." She said. Not saying anything else, she just left.
I know that Zain's gonna be damn angry with me when he comes to know the truth but what does Mama meant when she said that I'll be the one who'll be afraid of Zain?
A loud honking of the horn snapped me out of my thought. Now, there was traffic because of me!! "Going, going" I screamed. I hit the gas pedal hard and zoomed passed by everyone. Within an hour, I reached her place. His guards knew me so they hurriedly opened the door, allowing me to enter.
Her house is just so awesome!! Built in White Marble and on a total four pillar support the house was standing proudly. There's a large fountain, where you had to take a full round to reach to her main door. One of the chauffeur came to my car and took the keys from me. There was a time where I use to stay here like 24×7.
I quickly climed the few steps before ringing the doorbell. I shivered as the cold wind blew past me. It was way past Maghrib. One of the Maid opened the door and let me inside. I quickly ran inside and covered Aunty's eyes with my hand.
"Guess?"
"My second daughter, My life, My Hanya" Aunty said turning around. I pouted.
"How come you always know, that it's me?"
"That's a secret!!" She said kissing my cheek. "So, now you got the time to visit us?"
"Half of the time, I wasn't well and then the other half Sanjh didn't received my calls. What is up with her?" I sat down crossed leg on the sofa.
Aunty's expression changed suddenly. "What's wrong Aunty?" I asked.
"Nothing, everything's fine. She's just busy with her M.B.A" Aunty said.
"Hmm...but it was her choice to do MBA!"
"That's nothing new dear. You know how is she? She want that thing which she can never get and once she gets that, then she doesn't like it!!" Aunty sighed.
"Typical Sanjh!!" I said laughing. "How's Uncle? Where's he?"
"Allahamdulilah he's fine. Office."
"Nice. Is Sanjh in her room?" I asked standing up.
Aunty hesitated a bit before nodding her head. Strange!! Climbing up the stairs, I turned right and started walking straight. Her room was at the end of the corridor. I was humming to myself while walking. There I was!!
I muttered to myself standing at the front of her door. I was about to knock when the door opened making me gasp!! My face fell faster than a corpse in cement boots. In that instant my skin paled. My lips were slightly parted and my eyes were as wide as they could stretch.
The young man before me had a sort of hen-pecked look. His shoulders hunched together like he was trying to disappear inside himself. Even his dark eyes seemed to be attempting to retreat inside his head.
"Sameer?" I whispered
He startled like a deer in the woods, almost toppling as he took a large step backwards. He brushed imaginary dirt from his dress-shirt and pants and let his face fall with gravity again. I stepped aside while he slunk past not looking left or right.
The sight before me made me more surprised. What just happened between these two both? They both usually fight, so it's not a new thing for us but today something seemed different. I quickly went inside.
Sanjh wasn't there in her room. I checked the washroom, but she wasn't there also. Though her dupatta was lying half on the bed and half on the floor, her hijab was thrown on the floor. What just happened over here? I decided to check her balcony which was attached to her room.
Opening the double door of the balcony, I stepped inside. I was met with pure silence only the sounds of crickets could be heard that too from far away. I looked to my side but she wasn't there. I went a little further and there she was standing with her back turned towards me.
I followed her gaze and she was looking up in the sky, must be the stars. The moon was shining brightly. Her waist length hair was messed up. What could be she thinking that she didn't even noticed that someone else was also present here.
I slowly walked to her and stood beside her. She didn't noticed me. I kept my hand on her right shoulder as she turned. The moon showered it's light directly on to her face making her face more glow in the starry lights of the night. Her black eyes shone brightly with tears in them.
"Sanjh" I whispered as I wiped her tears. Her lips shivered. "What happened? Sameer was here, did he said something?" I asked softly. She just turned her face away from me.
"Sanjh please, look at me. I'm worried" I said as I made her turned towards me again. "Why was Sameer here? And what happened between you two?"
A loud sob escaped her lips as she kept her hand over her mouth. She felled down on her knees, shaking. Endless tears poured down from her eyes.
"Sanjh, you okay? What's wrong baby? Sanjh please..say something" I said kneeling down too, brushing her hair backwards.
"Hanya" she sobbed.
"I'm here" I said.
"It's a tale...Beyond Friendship!!" With that she leaned on me and cried.
After an hour or so, when she finally calmed down I asked her. "What did you meant by that, Sanjh?"
"It's a story for some other time" She replied keeping the glass on the side table.
"I thought we three were best friends but I didn't knew that the one's I call my best friends are hiding secrets from me" I was angry with both of them.
"Please Hani, don't say like that. The last thing that we ever wanted was to drag you in the middle of all this" Sanjh said.
"What do you mean by dragging me? Have I not got any right?" I shouted.
"Of Course, you have. But something are left to be unsaid." She sighed.
"From her best friend also?"
"Hani, you are not understanding my dear. You yourself was very much busy with your married life and on top of that I didn't wanted to disturb you." She said standing up.
"As if right now, I'm not at all disturbed." I shrugged.
"Hani, Trust Me. You'll be the first to unfold the chapters of my story." She said looking straight at me.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Just then my cell rang. It was Zain.
"Hello?"
"Hani, Adeel is crying. He's just not ready to calm down. Please come fast." Zain sounded tensed.
"I'm on my way. Within forty-five minutes, I'll be there." I said hurriedly looking for my hijab and Purse.
"Don't need to hurry at all. Take your time and drive safely. Please."
"Okayy...now hang up!!" I ended the call.
"It's Okay, you go now." Sanjh said giving my Purse.
"Look, I don't want to leave you like this and go!!" I said cupping her cheeks.
"I understand dear, but Adeel needs you. Just go" She said pushing me. We laughed and then I quickly bid my farewell to Aunty and was soon on the road.
