Yeona didn't know whether to like the way Yoongi was treating her or to be completely disgusted by it. He was being too nice to her and she didn't like the feelings that he made her feel by doing simple things for her. She had allowed him to lead her to the roof when it was time for lunch, introducing her and Hee-Chul to the group that was already there. Yeona really wasn't one to talk, mainly watching the boys interact together and nodding in responses if she was asked something.
She looks around at the boys, seeing Taehyung speaking with a tall peach haired boy and another broad shouldered one, already forgetting their names. She looks to the other side and sees the rest of the boys, smiling and laughing at one another, using the chance given to sneak away from the group to go behind the stairwell to take out a cigarette. She lights it as she takes a seat on the ground, the smoke rising into the air as she sighs, glad to be away from the group. She hears quick footsteps and turns her head to see Hee-Chul come around the corner, watching him as he looks over her before leaving once again.
She gets comfortable and closes her eyes, wondering when the next time the necklace would choke her out, dreading the time that it does. She heard footsteps but didn't bother opening her eyes, figuring it was Hee-Chul who came to check on her again. She felt eyes on her and she opened hers, seeing blue hair bounce off the sunlight, making it brighter than it really was. She blows the smoke away from him and watches as he takes a seat next to her, making her raise an eyebrow at him.
"What?" She asks, still feeling his eyes on her.
"Nothing." He replies.
She doesn't reply as she blows smoke rings up into the air, throwing the cigarette on the ground to put it out with her foot. She stands up to throw the butt away and comes back to the spot, seeing Yoongi waiting for her and she raises an eyebrow, wondering why he was so adamant about talking to her. She sits down and sees his mouth moving but couldn't hear words as the necklace starts to hum and vibrate around her neck.
Here it comes.
The necklace made itself tighter as it pinched, making her gasp and throw her hands up to her neck to make it stop. She coughs as she gasps for air but to no avail, the necklace wasn't done giving it's treatment yet.
"Y-Yeona?" Yoongi asks, watching as the girl struggles next to him with wide eyes.
She falls on her side and writes in pain until the choker finally lets go, gasping for air as it finally loosens around her neck. She coughs while taking deep breaths, slowly sitting back up against the wall to try and regain her composure.
"A-Are you okay? Holy shit, you're bleeding!" He says, furrowing his eyebrows at her neck.
He moves the hair away from her neck, touching her skin gingerly as he tries his best to ease the pain for her. She studies him as she tries to get her breathing under control, wondering what exactly he was doing and what he wanted from her. He looks up at her and they lock eyes for a moment, him breaking the eye contact to work on her neck again.
"Why is your necklace blinking?" He asks.
"It's a tracker." She says quietly.
She moves her hair to completely cover her neck and sighs, glad that the episode was over. She turns to catch Yoongi still looking at her, looking at his expression, however, made her immediately mad.
"Look, I don't need your pity, okay? Stop looking at me like that." She snaps
"S-Sorry." He says.
"What does that even mean?" She huffs, frustrated from hearing the word all the time.
He looks at her, helplessly trying to think of an answer but she knows all too well that he can't come up with one. She sighs and starts to get up before she's pulled back down to the ground, looking angrily at Yoongi's hand on her wrist.
"What?" She asks coldly.
"Are we friends?" He asks suddenly.
"What kind of question is that?" She asks, starting to get up again.
He blinks and brings her back down again, a smile starting to form on his lips.
"Starting today, you are my best friend, no buts, no nuts, no coconuts. Got it?" He asks, playfully wagging a finger in her face.
"Uh, S-Sure?" She says, the sentence coming out more like a question than a statement.
She tries once again to stand up and this time, he lets her and watches as she takes out another cigarette.
"You know, you should stop smoking." Yoongi says, getting up to move closer to her.
"I should, but I'm not gonna." She says quietly.
"And why is that?" Yoongi asks.
"It relaxes me." She says.
"You could find other things that help you relax, you know. I'm having a party on Saturday, you wanna come?" He asks.
She stares at him, furrowing her eyebrows with a confused expression on her face. She doesn't even know the guy yet he claims he's now her best friend and is now inviting her to a party. She can't help but feel he's trying to get something from her but shakes her head nonetheless and looks up at him, seeing his face lit up with hope and starts to feel a little bad for being so cold to him before.
"I guess I can go. But if it's boring, I'm leaving." She mumbles, pointing a finger at him when she said the last part.
"It won't be too boring, I promise." He smiles.
She stares at his smile, not knowing how to respond to it and she feels an unfamiliar sensation in her stomach, not knowing what to do as the rest of her body feels fine. She jumped as the bell rang out, signaling that lunch time was over and that it was time to get back to class. She allows Yoongi to walk her to her next class, which was with Taehyung and she turns to see a smile that instantly made her heart melt.
She didn't know if his feelings toward her were genuine or not but she started to like the way he was treating her, it was different than anyone else she had met and she really wanted it to continue. They said their goodbyes and Yeona walked into the room to sit next to Taehyung as he was the only person she knew. He watches as she sits down next to him, looking at the door where Yoongi was still looking at her with a smile on his face. Yoongi locks eyes with Taehyung and the smile disappears as the older boy quickly walks away to his next class.
"How did you get Yoongi Hyung to smile like that?" He asks.
"Huh? Oh, I told him I'd be his friend." She says.
"I've never seen him that happy before." He says, amazed that she had gotten him to smile like that in such a short amount of time.
"Look, Tae, I'm not the reason he's happy, okay? I don't make people happy like that, I only just...stand off in the background." She huffs.
"That's not true, Yeona." He says in a serious tone, making her look at him.
"I'm glad you feel that way, but you can't change what I feel about myself. What are we doing right now in the class anyway?" She asks, trying to change the subject.
"Oh, since it's the first day, we're doing a free draw." He replies, ignorant to what she had done.
She doesn't reply as she takes out a piece of paper and begins drawing, making the monster on her fire escape come to life on the paper, adding more detail than she ever could with a can of paint. As she works, she doesn't notice as a small crowd gathers around her, watching her as she adds detail to the background of the piece, making the alley look 3D as she even adds bags of trash around the creature's feet. She sighs as she sits up to massage her hand, jumping as she almost collides with the teacher.
"Why, Ms. Kim, that is very creative! You truly have a talent for art!" She praises, still looking at the picture in awe.
Yeona feels appreciation swell within her and she tries her best not to smile with pride. She takes another look at the paper to see the multiple monsters standing in the alley, as if they were a gang of monsters hanging out in their secret little hideout. She shifts her gaze over the blue haired creature a little longer than she had wanted to before looking to the other ones, seeing if anything else needed to be added. She watches as the teacher doesn't stop looking at it, feeling her cheeks grow warm at the thought of someone else liking her work. She knew that art was the only thing she was good at so she felt like it was an honor when someone would say how much they liked it.
"Ms. Kim, do you mind if I hang this up? I've never seen anything quite like it. Once you're finished please hand it to me." The teacher smiles, giving Yeona a hopeful look.
She nods hesitantly and watches as she leaves, looking at Hee-Chul who was on his phone, obviously bored before looking down at the 8 small monsters on the page.
"Hey, the monster right there..its got blonde hair. Is-is that supposed to be me?" Taehyung points to a small monster in the corner.
"Maybe." She says quietly.
She doesn't say anything as he takes the paper in his hands and identifies every one of his friends, watching as he becomes confused at the small monster in the middle, even looking back at Hee-Chul to compare but shakes his head when he couldn't think of who it was supposed to be.
"His name is Ji. He was...a brother." She says, her eyes moving down to the floor as she starts to zone out.
"O-Oh, you must miss him." He says.
"Very much, but I've got a new family now." She mutters, hoping he would get what she was trying to say.
She watches as his ears turn red and sees a large boxy smile that makes her stomach feel weird again. She didn't like the feeling and began thinking of local doctors she could go see about it.
"Mrs. Thu, I'm finished now." She says, walking up to the teachers desk.
The teacher perks up and smiles once she sees Yeona, taking the finished work gingerly in her hands.
"Wonderful work, Ms. Kim. I can see how much your friends must mean to you. I like how you portrayed them in a monstrous manner but they are adorable nonetheless. Great job." She smiles.
Yeona nods and watches as the teacher hangs up the paper on the wall just outside the classroom before sitting down next to Taehyung.
"Yeona, can I ask you something?" He asks.
"You just did." She raises an eyebrow.
He chuckles a little and turns toward her, scooting the chair closer to her.
"Why don't you smile?" He asks.
She blinks and looks at him, her face slowly falling into a sad expression that made Taehyung immediately regret what he had said.
"When the one thing you love most is taken from you, it's hard to find something to smile about." She says quietly, staring at the wall.
Her mother's smiling face came to her mind, making her want to walk right out of the room to be alone but she swallowed her emotions and brought her eyes up to Taehyung's, seeing the look she despised. Pity.
"Don't look at me like that." She snaps.
"S-Sorry." He says, shrinking back from her.
She sighs, turning back to the spare pieces of paper on the desk and tries to think of what else she could draw but her mind wasn't coming up with anything new. The bell starts to ring and she sighs as she starts to pack up her things, glaring at Taehyung when he nudges her shoulder.
"What's Yoongi doing here?" Taehyung asks in a hushed voice.
She turns her head to see what he was talking about and sees Yoongi looking at her drawing with a smile and she scoffs at him.
Why does he insist that we be friends? I don't understand it.
She pats Taehyung's back and walks up to the blue haired boy, looking at her picture with him.
"You drew this?" He whispers.
"W-Well, it's not that good. I don't know why people make a big deal out of it." Yeona mutters.
"Not good? Yeona, this is amazing!" He says, with a smile on his face, making her blush a bit.
"Not as good as my other paintings." She says, remembering the dragon she had spray painted.
"You should show me them sometime." He says as he starts to walk her to her next class.
"Uh, s-sure, I guess" She stutters.
"Alright, if you can ditch the stiff, I can drive us to where they were before the party on Saturday." He gives her a smile.
She slowly nods at him as she lets his words sink into her brain and stares at the smile that makes her heart beat faster than normal. She manages to tear her gaze away from the smiling boy as they move to the next class, Hee-Chul following close behind them. They find a table in the back to sit at and Yeona was surprised to see that Taehyung was also in this class with her. She sits in between the two boys and looks over the computer mounted to the desk to see that the classroom itself was a rather large one and she takes her time to familiarize herself with the writing on the board, not recognizing the name that was scrawled in some sort of cursive.
She gasps as she once again feels the necklace flare up with energy and almost falls out of her chair as it suddenly grips her skin, the pinch seeming to go all the way around her neck instead of just one spot like usual. She feels eyes on her as she gasps for air, trying to get some sort of oxygen into her body. She bends herself over the desk as she starts to see black dots cloud her vision before feeling it suddenly go away, leaving her a panting mess while looking back at Hee-Chul to see that he had the remote in his hand, looking at her as if he regret ever putting it on her in the first place. She hated the look but felt grateful that he had stopped it before she passed out in the middle of class.
"Yeona, are you alright?" She hears Yoongi's voice in her ear.
"Y-Yeah." She stutters as she looks back down at the ground.
The wall of hair that was draped over her face moved and Yoongi's concerned expression came into her peripheral vision. She turns her head to fully look at him and sees his hand come up to her neck, drawing it back with red fingers, looking at her with a raised eyebrow.
"I'm okay, really." She says.
His facial expression His eyes meet mine and he really looked as if he was about to cry for some reason.
"What's with that look?" She asks.
"Why did they have to put this thing on you?" He asks.
"Officer Kim doesn't trust me yet." She mumbles.
She watches as his eyes flick to the parole officer then back to her, his face turning into a scowl.
"Bull shit." He says.
She chuckles as she nods in agreement, cleaning up her neck before getting to work. She turns on the computer, going into the graphic design application in order to start creating the Yoongi monster from her assignment in the previous class. She adds angles to it to make it 3D and adds code to make it move. She presses the play button at the top of the screen and watches as the monster peels itself from a wall and waves at her, running down the alley and disappearing to nowhere.
"Well you're just talented in everything aren't you?" Taehyung scoffs.
"Yes." She says, not taking her eyes off the screen as she resets her project.
She adds more detail and accidentally changes the monster's skin color to purple instead of the original light blue.
"Shit." She curses lightly, moving her mouse to fix what she had done
"It looks better like that, don't fix it." Yoongi says beside her.
She titles her head to the side as she studies her creation, finding that he was right and leaves it alone. She turns to see Yoongi smiling down at her, making her turn quickly back to her screen before he could see her face turn red. She goes to cautiously look at him again to see that he was doing his work and she lets out a breath that she didn't know she was holding to turn her head to see Tae who was also doing his work. She turns back to her own screen with a small sigh before slightly turning to look at Yoongi through her periphery.
She sees his eyes on her and she quickly turns beck to what she was doing with a small jump, not knowing why she was being so nervous. She shakes her head as she wonders why one person could have such a strong effect on her, opening a new page on the computer to make something else. She tiredly makes a cross between a wolf and a tiger, making it look like the two species had a baby. She begins to make the background as she starts to think of names to call it.
"What. Is. That?" She hears Hee-Chul in her ear.
"It's a wolger, idiot. And his name is Mavi." She mumbles.
"It looks weird." He says.
"You look weird." She retorts.
He scoffs and goes back to where he was standing, staring daggers into her back as she sticks her tongue out at him.
"Tch, weird my ass. My creation looks fine to me." She says under her breath.
"It's cute." Taehyung chuckles softly.
She turns and nods in appreciation, seeing him nod in return before turning back to the screen to continue working up until the bell started to ring. She saves her work and sighs as she starts to pack up her things. She stands and suddenly feels two arms around her shoulders, immediately making her heart race faster as they hang on her. She squirms underneath them, trying to wiggle her way out from their touch before she could throw herself into a panic attack. She succeeds and steps away from them, looking at them to see hurt and confused expressions on their faces as she tries to not let her panic show on her cold exterior. She clears her throat as she huffs, slowly making her way toward the door.
"I'll see you guys tomorrow." She says, trying not to look them in the eyes as she practically runs away from them.
She could hear Hee-Chul apologize to them behind her, listening to his fast footsteps follow to catch up with her. She pushes open the metal doors as he appears at her side, walking with her until they get to the car where he leans against the door so she couldn't open it.
"What the hell was that?" He asks.
"It's none of your goddamn business, Officer Kim." She says, turning on her heel to walk home if he wasn't going to move.
He huffs and grabs her to pull her into the car, rushing to get home so he could talk to her.
"Yeona, please tell me why you left them like that? They seem to really want to be your friends." Hee-Chul pushes.
"Fine! I'll tell you if you really must know, my father used to touch me when I was little so I feel very uncomfortable being touched. Is that the answer you wanted, Officer Kim?" She snaps, starting to scream at him.
He takes a step back and blinks rapidly, trying to let her words sink in before his expression changes from shock to pity.
"Oh, I don't want your pity, Officer Kim. So save it and stop looking at me like that." She says, turning to walk away.
"Then how am I supposed to look at you, Yeona?" He snaps back.
"Look at me like I'm a regular person! That's all I have ever wanted, just to be looked at like a normal person whose father isn't in prison for murder." She screams, going into her room to slam the door.
She falls onto her bed with a huff before hearing a knock on her door, making her groan as a response. Hee-Chul takes that as a sign to open the door just a tiny bit, seeing her red face lying on her pillow.
"I'm sorry, Yeona, I didn't know." He says softly, pushing the door open wider.
She sighs and looks up at him with a pout, studying his new expression of embarrassment.
"Hee-Chul." She says.
He's taken a back when he hears his name come from her mouth but raises an eyebrow nonetheless.
"It's okay that you didn't know. I'm sorry for getting mad like that." She says.
"I understand, I would be mad too. Come over here." He says, letting go of the door altogether.
She raises an eyebrow as she peels herself off of her bed to walk toward him. He reaches out and grabs the collar on her neck which makes her instinctively lean back, seeing his eyes flick to hers to make brief eye contact before he gives her a reassuring smile. She relaxes a bit, feeling him fiddle with the choker until he finally pushes a button on the back to make it drop to the floor.
"Shit." He says.
"What?" She asks, looking around the room for signs of trouble.
"The choker had left a mark on your neck and now it's all red. I'm very sorry, Yeona, I didn't know that it chokes as it pinched." Hee-Chul lightly runs his fingers lightly over her neck.
She shivers at the touch, which makes him draw his hand back and sighs with concern on his face.
"I'm fine, really." She forces a smile.
"If you say so. What would you like for dinner?" He asks, putting the matter aside for the moment.
"Sushi." She answers almost immediately.
