Yeona sighs as she dangles her legs over the fire escape, looking at every car and person who comes in and out of buildings around her with an amused look on her face. She was used to having quiet neighbors and didn't expect the place to be as quiet as it was. She found herself starting to miss her nightly adventures with Ji and shook her head, wanting nothing more than to go back to the way things used to be, minus her father. She sighs and turns to look back into her room, noticing the bland brick wall right next to her window. She smiles slightly, getting up to get her duffel bag from inside, looking for her cans of spray paint and protective wear. She puts a mask on, going back outside to start shaking the cans as she begins to spray.
She didn't really know what she was making but she knew that it was an accurate representation of her best friend. She puts the cans down as she scoots back from the wall to admire what she had made, seeing a small monster with caramel brown eyes and cropped light brown hair. The more she looked at it, the more she realized that Ji was the only friend she had ever known in her entire life. She blinks as she takes off her mask, throwing it on top of the open bag that was back inside of her room. She takes out another cigarette and lit it, taking a drag before holding up to the creature she had made on the wall.
"Here's to you, Ji." She sighs.
"Who's Ji?" Hee-Chul's voice asks from inside of her room.
"No one." She sneers.
"Look, if we're going to be living together then you need to open up to me, Yeona." Hee-Chul says.
She glares at him, shifting her body to dangle her legs from the edge of the fire escape once again. She sighs and closes her eyes, trying not to open herself up just in case this dipwad decides to turn his back on her.
"Ji was my best friend," She starts, "He was the only one who was ever there for me and the only one who could really understand me."
There was a beat of silence and she looked behind her to see him sitting on the window sill, deep in thought.
"I'm sorry you had to move away from him, but it's for the best." He says.
"Is it? Is it really? Who the fuck wants to be friends with the daughter of a murderer?" She asks, feeling anger rise up in her body.
"Don't cuss. Look, your new school starts tomorrow, give it time and a chance. I know no one can replace your best friend, but can you at least try?" He asks.
"How about no." She scoffs.
"Alright, fine. Dinner's here." Hee-Chul says as he stands up, trying his best not to scoff back at her.
She doesn't say anything as she stares at the painting, not wanting to move from her spot.
"How long has that been there?" Hee-Chul asks, snapping her out of her thoughts as he points to the wall.
"I made it, there a problem with it, officer?" She asks, slightly challenging him to lose his professionalism.
"Still doing this huh? Make sure no one catches you." He says, going back into the room.
She stares at the spot he was just at before turning her gaze to the painting again, slightly smiling at it.
"So you can smile." He says.
"Everyone can smile, you just need the right person to bring it out." She says, scowling at him, thinking he had left her alone.
She shifts her gaze back to the picture that represented her best friend, knowing that it was practically impossible to ever see him again. She sighs, getting up from her spot on the fire escape to go inside to eat, seeing Hee-Chul on the couch with sushi on the coffee table.
"The force was kind enough to pay for your school supplies and have also arranged a tour of the school tomorrow. Be ready at seven.." Hee-Chul says, noticing that she had entered the room.
She nods, taking in a mouthful of food, earning a chuckle from him.
"You must really like sushi." Hee-Chul says.
"Food is food." She says, her mouth still full of the sticky rice.
He raises an eyebrow as he slightly nods, allowing her to continue eating silence. Yeona was thankful that she didn't have to eat the same three things anymore as the jail had only served variations of mandu, kimbap and bulgogi. Of course there was rice and she wouldn't say it was bad but she had gotten sick of the taste from being there for three months. She had always treated sushi itself as some sort of delicacy as she was rarely allowed to have it when she lived with her father. Her thoughts get interrupted as the tv gets turned on, the theme song for the show COPS comes blaring through the speakers and she almost drops her chopsticks. She scoffs and rolls her eyes, giving the man on the couch a glare.
"What?" He whines.
"You're so stereotypical, a cop watching COPS, really?" She scoffs once more.
"What did you expect?" He asks.
"I don't know." She snaps.
He fell silent and watched as she got up to go back into her room where she pulled out another cigarette. She sat down on her window sill as she took a drag from the roll of tobacco, catching sight of someone passing by the building. The person was walking a dog and had hair that made Yeona sit up straight to try to see what color it was. The person stopped walking to check their phone and she caught sight of violet hair under the light of the lamppost. She half smiles as she decided then and there that she was going to dye her own hair the very next day.
She had always wanted to dye her hair, and she knew her card could buy her any color she wanted but that was the thing, she didn't know what color to get. She sighs, extinguishing the remains of the cigarette and getting up from the window to close it. She could figure it out tomorrow once she was actually at the hair salon. She stretches her body before collecting clothes and rummaging around her things for a towel, making her way to the bathroom for a shower. She locks the door behind her and starts humming to herself as she gets the water ready, starting to sing out loud as she climbs into the tub.
She had always liked to sing but never wanted to do it in front of people, the shower head and her shampoo bottles were enough of an audience for her. She sighs and looks up, letting the warm water run down her face and onto her body, making her feel safe from the world. She didn't know how long she had been standing there but soon enough, she heard a knock on the bathroom door.
"Yeona, everything okay in there?" I heard Hee-Chul asks, his voice a bit muffled from the running shower.
"Yeah, just give me a minute." She says.
She didn't hear a reply so she assumed that he had left. She sighs as she turns off the water, stepping out into the now steamy room to grab her towel to dry herself off. She puts on her pajamas and opens the bathroom door to find a dark apartment in front of her. She turns the bathroom light off and tries to navigate her way back to her room, using the wall as a guide.
She feels a doorknob and twists it open, seeing her belongings waiting for her return. She puts her things away and turns around to see Hee-Chul standing in the doorway in nothing but underwear. Her eyes widen in shock and she looks away, feeling bile come up the back of her throat as she unmakes her bed.
"Good night, Yeona, I'll see you tomorrow at 7." He says, acting like nothing was wrong.
"S-Sure. Good night." She says, trying not to look at him again.
She hears him sigh and leave the room, letting out a sigh of relief as she hurries to close the door. She didn't expect her parole officer to be so open like that and she really didn't like it. If that was how it was going to be from now on, she didn't want any part of it. She shakes the thought of him from her head and climbs under her covers, putting her phone on the charger before setting an alarm for 6.
She lies her head on her pillow and closes her eyes for what seemed like a minute before being rudely awoken from her alarm. She stands up at attention almost immediately as she hears it go off, scoffing at herself as she realizes that she is no longer in jail. She sits herself on the bed and fumbles with her phone, trying to turn off the sound in her groggy state. She throws the electronic on the bed, stretching her back before getting dressed, trying to be quiet so she wouldn't wake the man sleeping down the hall.
She pulls her hair up in a messy bun to complete her look before going into the kitchen to make herself some food. She eats her scrambled eggs in peace for about 5 minutes before she hears the door to Hee-Chul's room being opened and she looks away in fear of seeing the man almost naked again. .
"Wow, you didn't make me anything?" He asks.
She looks at him, seeing him in yoga pants and a t-shirt, allowing herself to relax.
"Sorry your highness, I didn't know I needed to make you food too." She says, moving passed him to do her dishes.
He turns to her and pouts, trying his best to make her feel bad for him. She glares at him in return, making a shiver go down his spine and he didn't know that he could be scared of a teenager like he was at the moment.
"After the tour of the school, I'm dying my hair." She says, the glare still in her eyes.
"O-Okay." He says.
She walks past him, and goes back into her room to grab her phone and looks around her room, deciding that she didn't need anything else. She goes out into the living room to turn the tv on, watching a movie that happened to be on before she feels her phone vibrate in her hand. She looks down and excitement runs through her body as she sees a text message from Ji, smiling as she pushes on the notification.
Ji the B
Yo yo
Heard you got out yesterday
Where you at?
Looking to party?
She gets ready to text him back but stops, trying to think about where exactly she was and found that she had no idea. She exits out of the messenger and tries to go to her maps, to see where her location was but found that it had been disabled and deleted off of her phone. She sighs as she goes back into the messenger.
Yeona
Tbh I have no idea where tf I'm at
His response was as fast as hers was.
Ji the B
Man
That sucks
Oh, have you watched the news yet?
They found over 40 bodies from your backyard
She wasn't surprised, she knew that they would find more if they really kept looking but she knew she had to be at least a little concerned.
Yeona
Mega oof
She didn't know exactly what was appropriate to say so she said the first thing that came to mind, mega oof.
Ji the B
Mega oof is right
She chuckles slightly at his reply and sees Hee-Chul walk into the room, fixing his shirt as he tries to get ready to leave.
Yeona
It was nice talking to you booButI gotta go nowDoing some shit for my new schoolI'm dying my hair after that though
She takes the remote and turns the tv off, pulling on her shoes to get ready to leave.
"Should we drive or walk?" Hee-Chul asks.
"Drive, you're taking me to get my hair done." She says.
"Am I?" He asks.
"Do you wanna follow me as I walk in the heat to get my hair done?" She raises an eyebrow.
He pauses for a moment, knowing that she was right.
"That's what I thought." She says, walking out of the apartment.
She takes out her phone to see another text message from Ji.
Ji the B
Yeesh
Good luck with that
Send me a picture of ur hair when ur done boo
She looks behind her to see Hee-Chul fumbling with the keys to lock the door.
Yeona
I will
She puts her phone in her back pocket and follows Hee-Chul to his car, getting into the passenger seat when he had unlocked the doors. Once he gets in, he turns to her and hesitantly reaches behind him to pull out a bulky necklace from the back seat. She makes a face at it and takes it from him, pinching it between her thumb and her index finger.
"Look, it's supposed to be a tracker and it goes around your neck." He explains.
"Yeah, I could tell that much." She scoffs.
She puts it on and realizes that it's a choker necklace, giving her a slight pinch that makes her tense up. She rubs the spot where it had pinched her and draws back her hand to notice that there was a bit of blood on her fingers. She looked up at Hee-Chul in disbelief and showed him her hand.
"It made me bleed!" She scoffs.
"It does that every three hours." He says casually.
She scoffs once more and shakes her head, crossing her arms as she looks out of the window, not wanting to talk to the beast beside her. He sighs and starts the car, driving across the street to the school parking lot. As soon as she feels the car be put into park, she gets out and slams the door shut out of rage, seeing her reflection in the window to notice that the necklace had a flashing red light.
"Seriously? Isn't this a bit much?" She asks, getting angrier by the second.
"If you get away from me, the the necklace will activate and let me know where you are." Hee-Chul explains tiredly.
She shakes her head once more and tries to adjust the necklace so she could actually breathe. She felt herself grow frustrated as she felt like a dog on a shock collar. She looks around the parking lot and sees other kids with their parents, turning her back on them as she walks into the school behind the parole officer. They walk past the front desk and to an office, which she assumed was the principal's. Hee-Chul knocks on the door and enters the room, revealing a small woman in a big chair behind a desk. She looks up from a stack of papers and smiles at Hee-Chul, standing up to welcome him. Her smile slowly fades as she catches sight of Yeona standing behind him.
"My name is Officer Kim Hee-Chul and this is-" He starts.
"Kim Yeona Jung, yes I know very well who she is." The woman says.
Yeona feels herself start to become extremely uncomfortable and she sits in a chair, looking down at the ground.
"Oh, dear, I hope I didn't make you feel bad. Don't worry, everything is just fine. My name is Lee Myung-Hee and I am the principal of this school. I have your things for you." She says kindly.
Yeona looks up at the older woman in surprise, not knowing that the woman would be so nice to her. The principal goes to her desk, rummaging through papers until she finds a packet and gives it to Yeona, who looked it over to see that it was every class that she had signed up for at her previous school. She looks over the class schedule in awe and looks back up to her new principle.
"How-" She starts.
"Everything that was at your old school comes here, dear." Mrs. Lee says.
"O-Oh." She says, starting to feel a bit stupid she had questioned it.
"I have arranged for a student to take you around the school to meet your teachers." She smiles.
"Alright, Thank you very much, Principal Lee." Hee-Chul smiles, standing up to bow.
Yeona stands and bows as well, saying a silent thank you in her head before a boy her age comes around the corner. He starts to smile at her but she stares coldly at him, stopping him dead in his tracks.
"Ah, Mr. Kim Taehyung, this is Kim Yeona Jung, please show her around the school." The principal says, smiling warmly between the two of them.
