Chapter 4 - Heavenly Trial
If there was something Bi Fang found himself to be wary of, it was his Master's niece, Bai Feng Jiu, Queen of Eastern Qing Qiu.
13000 years ago, she was harmless. Strong, yes, but harmless. She was a good monarch, but she was too kind. She wore her heart on her sleeve. She was stern, but easygoing.
With her appearance, it was inevitable that the queen's beauty indeed was calamitous.
No one would expect that same beauty to be able to raze an entire tribe to the ground with just herself and her right hand man in a single night.
But she did.
With a sweep of her sword, twenty members of that ghost clan had their upper halves severed in an instant. On that night, blood washed YiLui Island anew.
"This life is already long enough," upon passing by YiHua Pond in the 11th level of heaven, Bi Fang saw a rather interesting sight. His master's niece was there, with a few urns of wine beside her. Her cheeks were pink and her eyes were strangely glossy while her right-hand man was quietly watching her.
"I remember years ago, when the Dark Elves attacked us," she slurred, her tongue nearly failing her. "Was it morning or evening? Cheng Jiao, answer."
"It was dusk, My Lady," he answered politely. "You were tending to the Prince that time because of a nasty spell that hit him."
Feng Jiu giggled, raising her jar in delight. "That's right! That brat was too eager, I nearly pushed the sword clean off of his back in anger," she laughed once more, her actions causing two jars to fall into the water.
Bi Fang narrowed his eyes. 20000 years ago? But at that time, she was in Qing Qiu or in Tai Chen Palace. 'Unless...' he snapped his neck to her direction and confirmed if she was drunk.
She really was.
Without another word, he turned back on his heel and left, to find his master.
::
"Little Jiu is drunk?" Bai Zhen asked, his expression to one of disbelief. "But Little Jiu isn't one to get drunk on a trip," he murmured. "Where did you say she was?"
"In YiHua Pond, on the 11th level of Heaven. She was laughing and her face was very red," he dutifully answered. "She seemed to be talking about her Heavenly Trial..."
"What?" Bai Zhen exhaled loudly, before standing up and abruptly walking towards the gate, just as A-Li had encountered them.
"A-Li greets Fourth Uncle," the Little Dough respectfully greeted. "Fourth Uncle, where are you going? I heard you were talking about Big Sister Feng Jiu. Can A-Li come too?"
Bai Zhen immediately agreed. He didn't mean to be a nosy one, but he had been far too worried about Feng Jiu since she came back. He wanted at least a pinch of details of her Heavenly Trial. If A-Li was there, with Feng Jiu intoxicated, she might tell them more.
Without wasting another second, they hurried to the 11th level of Heaven, unaware of Lian Song and Si Ming who heard everything.
::
"Aren't you cute?" giggled Feng Jiu as she assaulted the Little Dough's cheeks. "He would've been a little older your age if he survived."
"My Lady!" interrupted Cheng Jiao, a worried look casted on his face. But Feng Jiu held up one finger to silence him. "Shush. I can talk about my grand-nephew anytime I want, wherever I want."
"Grand-nephew? Big Sister Feng Jiu already has a grand-nephew?" asked A-Li. Bai Zhen mentally congratulated his nephew for his cleverness.
"Mm-hmm," Feng Jiu nodded. She raised her arms up to A-Li's height, squinted, and pointed at it. "He was this tall when I last saw him," she pinched his nose. "Just as tall as you."
A-Li brightened. "Any nephew of Big Sister Feng Jiu is a nephew of mine. Where is he, Big Sister?"
"Gone," was her simple answer. A-Li was confused. "People, mortals and gods alike have their own foul nature. This is why you shouldn't trust anyone easily," she looked at the child, pouting. "Especially the Nine Heavens. Look at that dreadful Su Jin."
The white wolf appeared and tottered happily to Feng Jiu, who took it in her arms and caressed its fur gently, and sighed mournfully. "There, there. We both miss your old master, but gone is gone. We can only look at the stars like we used to do the old times," she muttered, her eyes drooping.
"Big Sister Feng Jiu isn't the one who tamed the wolf? Then whose is it?" asked A-Li, eyes wide in curiosity.
Feng Jiu pouted at him. "I helped tame it, so it can be considered as partially mine. As for his original owner, I already told you about him."
"Big Sister's nephew?" she nodded.
"If you want, I have a white spiritual fox I came across on the way here. It's injured though..." she trailed off, but A-Li already looked so eager at the thought of having a pet.
"Do you want it?" she asked. A-Li nodded eagerly even more after remembering that she said it was a white fox. His mommy is a white fox too! She stretched out her hands to something that was the size of a lunchbox. "He's about this small," she giggled then chugged from her jar. When she pulled it away from her lips, she hiccuped.
Cheng Jiao smiled apologetically as he swept the jars out of Feng Jiu's reach. "Your Highness. The fox is still injured. Probably when it is healed?"
"A-Li wants it!" A-Li replied, excited.
Feng Jiu squished his cheeks together, giggling. "All right, all right," she hiccuped and grabbed A-Li's palm, then with her finger, drew a magic rune on it. Bai Zhen nearly bit his tongue. Drawing a magic rune properly while drunk was an excellent feat. If she couldn't pull this off, Bai Qian will probably have his head for it.
"What is this for, Big Sister Feng Jiu?" A-Li presented his palm to her after she drew on it. The rune was properly made, albeit a little shaky. For that, Bai Zhen can ease his worries.
Cheng Jiao sighed. "Lady forgets things when she is drunk. Your Highness can go to Jing Xuan Courtyard tomorrow and let the Lady have a look at the rune, since she has promised to give you the white fox."
Feng Jiu stood up, the jar still in her hands, shaky, and A-Li reached out to support his cousin. She was trying to go to the pond, but was held back by her right-hand man. "Let me go! I'm going to take a dip."
"My Lady, this isn't Qing Qiu. We're in the Nine Heavens," Cheng Jiao gently chastised. Bai Zhen took it as the time to show himself. Right as he arrived, Feng Jiu turned her body to his direction with eyes drooping and wordlessly dropped into his arms, unconscious.
Bai Zhen sighed and carried Feng Jiu, then turned to Cheng Jiao. "I'll be sending her back to her courtyard."
::::::::::::::::::::
How are you all doing in quarantine or lockdown guys? As for me, I've taken up gardening, and the wi-fi is hella slow.
So yes, as you've seen in the last chapter, Feng Jiu plans to use A-Li to make Fenrir stay in the Nine Heavens, of course, this is like a commensalism relationship, Fenrir benefits, but this neither benefits nor harms A-Li.
So what do you think?
