Chapter 17

"Family meeting!" Carter yelled, knocking on my door.

"Family what?" I mumbled sleepily and glanced at my alarm clock. "It's not even six!"

I stumbled out of bed and padded across the room. I brushed my teeth quickly and then went downstairs where I found Caitlyn looking just as miserable as I felt. "Family meeting," she muttered. "I swear, they're nuts."

"I think I'm still asleep," I groaned.

"Welcome to the club," she grumbled.

"Good Morning," Blaine said brightly, as he and Tori came into the room.

"Morning Dad," Carter smiled, taking a seat next to me.

"Why is he smiling?" I asked Caitlyn.

"He's sucking up," she yawned. "Probably thinks that this meeting is about him."

"This happens a lot?"

She nodded. "I'm usually the one in the hot seat though."

"I'm not in trouble," Carter huffed.

"Keep telling yourself that," Caitlyn snickered.

I glanced around the room and raised my hand.

"Yes?" Tori asked.

"It's six in the morning, is this really necessary?"

"Unfortunately, it is."

"So unfair," Caitlyn muttered. "Why do we need to be here if you're only after Carter?"

"I'm not in trouble!" Carter repeated.

Tori glanced at her husband and they had a silent conversation before she turned back to us. "We called you three here because we haven't had one of these since Camille's arrival and with all that's been going on, we think that its time."

"Yeah, time that should be used to sleep," Caitlyn grumbled.

Tori frowned and continued. "Cait your attitude is one of the reasons why you're here."

"I don't have an attitude," she defended.

"You don't?" Blaine asked.

"No Dad, I don't," she replied, rolling her eyes.

He laughed and Tori shot him a glare. "This isn't funny," he said, wagging his finger at us.

I smiled. It was hard not to like Blaine, even though I kept my distance from him, because I didn't want to like him.

"She smiled," he said, grinning at me.

"Honey," Tori scolded.

"You're right," he told her. "You're absolutely right. This is no time for jokes."

"We've received a call from the Principal," Tori began and Carter tensed.

"Fighting in school will not be tolerated," she continued. "I've been trying to give you guys your space because of everything that has happened lately..."

She meant me being shipped off to live with them, and turning their world upside down. It was my turn to frown. Carter patted my knee and I relaxed a little.

"But fighting? C'mon guys, you know better," she sighed.

"Why does it sound like we're all taking the fall for that?" Caitlyn asked. "I barely had anything to do with it."

Tori frowned. "Caitlyn―"

"Barely?" Carter snapped.

"I didn't stutter," she snapped back.

"Hey!" Tori yelled. "The adult is speaking."

"Honey," Blaine said calmly, "I think that we should take a break, there's entirely too much yelling."

"Fine," Tori conceded. "But I want you all back here after school. No excuses."

"Yes Mom," Caitlyn mumbled.

Carter and I nodded.

The drive to school was tense, to say the least. Carter played the radio so loud, I thought I'd lose my hearing by the time we got there and Caitlyn kept shooting the both of us dirty looks. Why she was mad at me, I had no idea.

"Meet me back here at three," Carter ordered before walking away.

"Sir, yes sir!" Caitlyn shouted.

"Are you trying to piss him off?" I hissed.

"Yes!" she snapped and stormed off.

I groaned and massaged my temples, already feeling a headache coming on.

Staying focused in class proved to be more challenging than I'd anticipated, everything and everyone got on my nerves and as the morning progressed, my mood had only gotten worse. Naturally, I blamed Caitlyn. It was like she had transferred all of her bad energy onto me.

I scowled at her when she smiled at me and she shrugged with that stupid smile still on her face.

"Trouble in paradise?" Casey asked when I met her at my locker.

"You don't wanna know," I muttered.

"I do," she insisted. "Even Logan's in a mood and its starting to bug me."

"We had a family meeting," I confessed. "Before six!"

She rolled her eyes. "That explains it."

"I'm not even sure why I'm upset. It's not like I'm in trouble or anything."

"Your siblings are upset, so naturally you are too," she shrugged.

"Siblings?"

"Carter, Caitlyn...remember them?" she asked, tapping me on the forehead.

I chuckled, "oh right, those siblings."

"So, Aiden," she said, switching topics.

"So, Blake," I said with a smile.

"Okay, I get it," she mumbled.

"No seriously, Blake," I prompted, as we walked down the hall.

"If you say another word, I'm going to beat you up and take your lunch money."

I cracked a smile. "That sounds promising."

I squeezed my eyes shut and willed the equation to disappear but when I opened them again, it was still there, mocking me.

"Math really isn't your thing, is it?" the girl beside me asked.

I laughed and shook my head. "I suck so bad."

"Me too," she laughed. "I'm Krista, by the way."

"Camille."

"I know," she laughed. "You're Caitlyn and Carter's long lost sister."

I raised my brow. "I'm what now?"

"Ladies, please," Mr. Ramon, our math teacher chided.

"Sorry," I mumbled and with final glance at Krista, I bent my head and got to work.

Their long lost sister? Really? That's what I'm known as? Why can't I just be Camille the new girl, the one with the weird accent and even weirder taste in clothes?

I stared at what I'd written and drew lines through it. I don't know why it bugged me so much, just that it did.

With a sigh, I wrote down the equations that were on the board and half-heartedly tried to solve them.

I warded off any other attempts at a conversation with Krista for the rest of the period and when the bell rang for lunch, I sprinted to the cafeteria.

I was in such a hurry that I almost knocked Aiden over.

"Hey," he said, steadying me. "You okay?"

"What?" I asked, momentarily dazed.

"Are you okay?" he repeated.

I nodded and stepped out of his grasp.

"If you're sure..." he said uncertainly.

"I should go," I laughed nervously. "Hunger makes me say stupid things."

He quirked his brow and I mentally face-palmed myself.

Why did I even say that?

"Hey there," Madison said when I sat next to her. "Everything okay?"

"Oh yeah, totally. It's all sunshine and unicorns," I grinned.

"You are so weird," Casey muttered, evoking a round of laughter from Sophie and Madison.

I rolled my eyes. "And still, we're friends."

"You gonna eat that?" Sophie asked, pointing at my fries.

"I was," I replied, but gave them to her anyway.

"That was a test," she said smugly. "No one gives away their fries unless they're upset."

"I was being nice." I defended. "But not to worry, I've learnt my lesson."

They laughed and I sighed. "I need new friends."

"But you just got us," Madison pouted.

"She's kidding," Casey said, rolling her eyes. "She knows that we're irreplaceable."

"I don't know about that. Krista seems like a pretty cool person," I lied.

"Yeah right!" Casey snorted. "That girl is the chairman of the gossip committee."

"You don't even know which Krista I'm referring to," I said, crossing my arms.

"Krista Collins. She's in your math class," Casey stated. "And I know this because most of the student body has heard by now that you suck at math. I can help with that by the way."

I groaned. "Can this day get any worse?"

"It can," Madison supplied.

"Thanks for the wise words," I sulked.

I took a seat on the couch and shifted a bit when Caitlyn joined me.

She had a silent stare down with Carter who was sitting on the other side of the room until Bailey came skipping in.

"Are you guys in trouble again?" she giggled.

"Get out of here," Caitlyn said, reaching for her.

She ran to Carter and laughed when he caught her. He whispered something in her ear which caused her to let out another round of laughter before she nodded and left the room, pausing to stick her tongue out at Caitlyn.

"Good, you're all here," Tori said, entering the room.

"Unfortunately," Caitlyn mumbled, just low enough for me to hear.

"Your father has somehow managed to convince me not to ground you all until Christmas," she said in a sharp tone.

I wanted to say that Blaine wasn't my father but decided to let it go, that was an argument for another day. Besides, this round belonged to Caitlyn. Right on cue, she muttered, "I refuse to be punished for a crime that I didn't commit."

Tori shot her a glare and continued. "So, we're going with the backup plan."

"Oh joy!"

"Caitlyn Marie Prescott one more word and you will be grounded until your senior year," Tori promised.

Caitlyn sucked in a breath but didn't reply.

I glanced at Carter and when he shrugged I rolled my eyes. This family was a mess.

I'd never yell at my dad, no matter how mad I was at him and if I'd grown up with a mother, I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't have yelled at her either. I mean, sure I'd snapped at Tori a few times, but I had a lot of unresolved anger to work through when it came to her. But Caitlyn was just pushing it. It was like she was determined to spend all of her free time doing chores.

"We're implementing the buddy system," Tori said excitedly.

"The what?" I asked.

"Buddy system," Carter answered. "They use that stupid system whenever Cait and I are snapping at each other. It's supposed to help us bond or whatever."

Caitlyn remained silent.

"Carter your coach told us that he has his own punishment in mind for you, so Caitlyn and Camille that just leaves you two."

"I'm confused," I said, feeling my anger rising. I wasn't about to be lumped with the girl who was angry at the world―for who knows how long.

"Thanksgiving break is in less than a month and we're taking a little trip."

I eyed Tori suspiciously, suddenly wishing she had waited for Blaine to get home.

"But?" Carter prompted.

"We're taking a trip, we as in your father, Bailey and I."

"What about us?" I asked since Caitlyn was still silent.

"Oh, you guys will be staying here, with a list of stuff to keep you busy while we're gone," she said with a smile.

She reminded me of my 9th grade history teacher, the one who only smiled when she was about to give us a test that she knew we couldn't pass. It was creepy.

"What?" Caitlyn barked, jumping to her feet. "That's insane!"

"And you haven't even heard the best part," Blaine said from the doorway.

I smiled involuntarily when I saw him. "The best part?"

"You get to complete the list with Caitlyn, and Carter you're welcome to join them," he said with a huge smile. "But―yes, there's a but here. If you manage to complete it within three days, there's an extra special prize to be given as your Christmas present. Caitlyn, sweetheart I believe you know what that is, don't you?"

"No way!" she gasped.

"Yes way," Tori smiled, crossing her arms. "But of course you'll have to complete each and every task first. And also, the present is to be shared between you girls."

"Okay, so we know what's in it for them besides a bonding experience, but what about me?" Carter asked.

"You get to keep your freedom."

He mulled it over for a few seconds before nodding. "Fair enough."

***

"What's the prize?"

"I have no clue and Caitlyn won't tell me," I complained.

Casey threw her head back and laughed. "Oh come on! Even I know what it is."

"Then why'd you ask?"

"Felt like."

I grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at her and she cracked up again. "Your phones ringing," she said, tossing it to me.

April's face flashed on the screen and I swiped it. "Hello?"

"It's been what? Two weeks since we last spoke?" she asked tersely.

"Someone's angry," I teased and imagined her rolling her eyes.

"Not funny, Cami," she said quietly. "You've already forgotten me."

I glanced at Casey and pointed to the door before I slipped out into the hall. "That's not true, things have been a bit hectic, but I promise that I haven't forgotten you," I said. It sounded like a lame excuse, even to me.

"You missed my birthday," she deadpanned.

My eyes widened. "April, I am so sorry," I whispered. "I've been really—"

"Busy," she said, cutting me off. "Yeah, I know."

No one said anything for what felt like an eternity but was probably only a minute. I didn't know what else to say, and there was nothing that I could've said besides I'm sorry and since I'd already said that, I sighed.

I felt like the biggest jerk on the planet, and that's saying something because I lived down the hall from Caitlyn. And everyone knows that she took the crown a long time ago.

"Is it too late to wish you a happy birthday?"

"Isn't it?"

"Happy Birthday to you..." I sang softly.

"Oh for the love of ice cream, please stop," she laughed, it sounded strained, but I was just happy to hear it.

"I'm really sorry April, but I'll make it up to you," I promised.

"How?"

"I'll think of something," I said lightly.

"I guess that's fine," she sighed.

"Forgiven?" I asked in a hopeful voice.

"Maybe," she replied.

"I'll take it," I laughed.

"Alright, I have to go now but thanks for the song," she chuckled.

"Already?" I asked, feeling like I'd just lost something.

I hadn't realized just how much I missed April, and on top of feeling like a jerk, now I was sad too.

"Dance practice," she said, sounding happier. "We'll talk later?"

It wasn't a statement and it hurt that she felt the need to ask me that. "Definitely," I said, trying to sound cheerful.

Casey raised her brow when I re-entered the bedroom and I sighed. "Don't ask."

"I wasn't going to," she shrugged. "I'm not that interested in your life."

I rolled my eyes. "I'll take your word for it."

She tossed me a sweater from the closet. "Wanna take a walk with me?"

"Not really, no."

"Okay let me rephrase that," she said sternly. "We're going for a walk."

"No thanks, Mom," I replied, rolling my eyes.

"Aiden's coming over," she said with a smug smile. "Carter invited him."

I glanced at the sweater and reluctantly picked it up. "I guess I'll be spending some time in the great outdoors after all," I muttered.
