Chapter 3

[Edited][Edited Again 5/28/18][Once More 12/12/19][& Again 12/23/19]

7:30AM

I woke with a long deep yawn, letting it consume me as I stretched out my limbs from the curled up fetal position I was in. My heavy eyelids flickered as my eyes adjusted to my now conscious state. I dragged my feet lazily off my bed, stumbling a bit as I raised my aching body from the comfort of my bed. It seemed to take ages shuffling my way to the couch to check on Emma just to find the couch abandoned. I rerouted back to her room, slightly opening her door and poked my head in. I envied the way Emma always looked gorgeous, even in her sleep. Emma is what you can say a split image of a barbie doll. Her thick straight naturally blonde hair fanned out around her blanketing her shoulders as she slept peacefully. I've long forgotten the feeling of a good night's rest, that feeling now replaced with nightmares and aching muscles and bones.

I slowly closed the door and headed to the kitchen on a new mission to replenish my now growling stomach. The mission ended up as a fail with me giving up on looking for food that I didn't have to cook. I left a note for Emma letting her know I went to the cafe/bakery downstairs, before heading into my bathroom and taking out my makeup bag. I centered my focus on my mirror, taking notes of the bruises that were starting to fade but were still mostly visible and needed covering. I covered them up as much as I could, and grabbed my turtleneck sweater to cover my neck before proceeding downstairs toy building's cafe.

"Skylar, darling, how are you." Mrs.Chester greeted me as I entered to the cafe area from the elevators. Mrs.Chester was the owner of the bakery and the landlord of the apartment. Her and her husband have been together for 35 years and started this business together. She was 63 and he was 66 and they were an adorable couple together.

"Hey Mrs.Chester. Im fine. How's Mr.Chester?"I answered and ask and right on cue Mr.Chester came out carrying a big box.He set it down on the edge of the counter and gave Mrs.Chester a kiss and the cheek.

"Im doing great and what did I tell about calling us that. Call us by our first name."David told me. David was his first name and Linda was Mrs.Chester first name. They told me to call them by their first name countless number of times but I always seem to forget.

"So what happened?" Linda leaned in and whispered to me. She knew all about my mom and the divorce and everything. I looked around the cafe and just realized the line that was starting to form behind me.

I leaned in toward her and whispered back towards her,"I tell you later," she nodded her head and I continued in my normal voice,"In the meanwhile, can I get hot chocolate and a double mocha with 2 bacon egg and cheese and 2 chocolate croissants." She nodded her head again and started up on my order.

*************************

Once Linda handed me my food I went back upstairs to the apartment. I headed straight for the kitchen, laying the food out on the island and immediately starting on my sandwich and croissant. A loud thud and a shriek from Emma's room had me choking on a a bite of my sandwich as I instantly reached for the sharpest knife out of the knife holder and hurried towards Emma's room.

I swung open the door with a battle cry ready to defend my barbie, but my battle cry died out weakly in realization that the only thing Emma needed saving from was the sheets that wrapped around her in a tangled mess and it's tag team buddy, the floor.

"What happen" I asked bursting out laughing as Em lifted herself up.

"I fell obviously, and it's not funny." She pouted, throwing a pillow at my in the process which only mad me laugh even harder.

"Whatever. I got you some breakfast from the cafe." I said rolling my eyes and walking back towards the kitchen. I handed Emma her food and we both sat down at the table.

"So, guess what happen yesterday." Emma told me

"You know I hate guessing Ems. Just tell me" I said to her immediately passing on guessing.

She sighed."Fine. I met a boy while I was getting the mail yesterday before I came up," She told me with a huge smile on her face.

"Really? Who? Em, he could be a total creep, you should be talking to random boys." I told her feeling my protectiveness kicking in.

"It's this guy who lives in the building. He just moved in a week ago. He actually lives on this floor and he is not a creep Sky. How do you expect to meet and get to know people if you don't talk to them. I know you have a hard time trusting people, but you can't expect to live the rest of you life shutting everybody out because of what happen babes, there's good people out there." Emma replied back earning an eye roll from me in return.

"So is it safe to assume you told this guy where our apartment is?" I said in disbelief as I thought back to the guy last night. Of course he didn't knock on our door by random.

"I did, just in case he ever needed help or something or wanted to hang out. He's so fine Sky, just wait until you see him. I was thinking we should give him some brownies just  as a welcome present." She suggested. I cocked my head to the side with the straightest face I could muster.

"Or just so you have a reason to see him again," I said to her matter-a-factually. I saw Emma's cheek turn a a slightly darker shade of pink. I debated if it was even worth it telling her that he already checked in on her suggestion to stop by.

"You're right, but can we please still make the brownies, please?" she begged me and put on her puppy dog face.

"Fine." I reluctantly agreed failing miserably at resisting her big blue eyes.

2 hours later and we managed to make a mess of the kitchen since Emma insisted that we should start from scratch. We finally got it right and put it in the oven. I plopped down on the kitchen table and wiped my forehead."Whew. That was a lot of work."

"Yea no kidding. Never knew making brownies could be so hard." Emma sighed and sat down next to me.

"So tell me more about this guy, what makes him brownie worthy?"I said curiously.

"Well, his name is Dylan and he has these gorgeous emerald eyes. I swear you could just get lost in them. He's just beautiful, Sky. Like an angel. Oh and he's tall with a killer smile. You know I have a thing for tall guys with good teeth! He just seemed like such a good person, Sky. Honestly. If you give him a chance I really think you would like him. He could be my prince charming." Emma gushed, "I think I'm in love, Sky."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes and gag. Emma was such a hopeless romantic, she always saw the good in people. "Oh stop, you're hopeless romantics side is showing. You just met the guy. He sounds like a tool anyways. They never show you their bad side or hidden agendas off the jump."

"Really Sky, really?"

"Well, he does. He sounds way too "dreamy" not be, fairytales don't exist." I believed that in every way possible. I use to be just like Emma, always thinking of happily ever afters, but my parents ruined that mindset for me. Even though I loved my father, he cheated on my mom and my mother was beautiful, kind, sweet, basically perfect, but we all saw her true colors.

"You haven't even met him yet. Just give him a chance please" Emma pleaded. I looked at her and she looked like a little kid pleading to get a toy that she couldn't live without. Looking into her pleading blue eyes I voted against dropping the bomb that I already met him and made up my mind.

"You're lucky I love seeing you happy." I sighed. Emma squealed wrapping me up in her arms and squeezing me.

"Thank you so much. I just know your gonna like him." She squealed again and at that moment the oven went off and Emma jumped up and practically ran for it with more energy then ever before.

************************************

Emma knocked gently at the door for the 3rd time ignoring my plead protest that this is a bad idea and that I regret saying yes. I finally decided to give up, getting increasingly annoyed as more time passed and she knocked again for the 4th time.

"He's probably not even home. Can we go?" I asked impatiently as Emma was about to knock again.

"He's home, I  just heard shuffling. He was probably sleeping." Emma insisted which was proven true at that moment when Dylan opened up the door yawing in just low hanging sweats and a full head of messy hair.

Who the fuck opens the door like that?

I shifted on my feet as we all awkwardly stood there. Dylan stared wide eyes at us obviously surprised to see both of us and Emma stared back with her eyes about to pop out of their socket. I glazed my eyes over Dylan taking a good look at him. I did not recall him being this attractive last night.

Well, I can see why Em's so head over heels for him now.

I cleared my throat getting tired of staring pointlessly at him, probably boosting his ego and tried to think of anything to say."So....um....we baked you some brownies as a welcoming gift."

"Uh..thanks. Do you guys want to come in?" He asked uncertainly. Is he seriously asking that?

"N-"

"Yes! Yes we would like to come in." Emma said cutting me off, shooting me daggers before smiling up at him.

"You can put the brownies on the counter. I'm gonna get dress, not that I really hear you ladies complaining." He said winking towards Emma. I couldn't help but scoff and roll my eyes as Emma giggled at his cocky remark. He walked into what I assumed was his bedroom while we closed the front door and headed toward the kitchen.

"Isn't he just to die for Sky,"Emma blurted out once we got into the kitchen.

"More like rude and inappropriate. I mean who answers the door half naked." I shot at Emma and she just shrugged.

"Whatever. At least he has the body to answer the door half naked and you said you were going to give him a chance." Emma shot back with a pout.

"I said I was going to give him a chance I never said I was going to like him and so far I'm not impressed and starting to dislike him even."I pointed out. Emma was just about to say something back to me just when Dylan walked in. Fully clothed.

"So, hows it going Emma?" He asked not even acknowledging me. I just awkwardly stood there leaning against the countertop as they got into a full blown conversation filled with mostly small talk and cringe worthy flirting.

"Oh my gosh! I forgot the lemonade. I'll just run back and get it. I'll be right back." Emma suddenly exclaimed and dashed out leaving me in an uncomfortable silence with Dylan.

"I didn't get to properly introduce myself last night before you left, I'm Dylan." Dylan stated holding his hand out and breaking the silence.

Is this douche bag kidding me. Does he really think he can just ignore me then expect me to shake his hand.

I just stared at his hand in disgust then back to his face and rolled my eyes in disbelief. He pulled his hand back and ran it threw his hair once he realized I wasn't going to shake it. I couldn't believe this was the same guy I met last night. Maybe if I had learned his name last night I would have been better prepared when Emma told me about him.

"So, are you Emma's sister or what?" He asked in an attempt to clear the silence.

I looked up into his eyes ready to tell him off when I felt a sense of deja vu as I stared into his emerald eyes. Emma was definitely right about being able to get lost in his eyes. I tried to think back to when the last time I saw someone with those same rich colored eyes. Just than I remember back to the night when I ran away and almost got killed.

"Best Friend." I answered him clearing my throat to maintain that same cold tone I had towards him as I pushed the memory away.

It can't be him. What are you thinking? Definitely not, noway.

"What the hell is your problem? I'm just trying to start a conversation," He snapped at me.

"Oh, so now your interested in me and want to start a conversation. Well, I'm not interested." I snapped back.

Definitely not him.

Just at that moment Emma comes in holding a pitcher of lemonade."Im back. Did I miss anything?" She said smiling at each of us.

"Nope, nothing at all. Right Dylan." I told her smiling back her then turning to Dylan and flashing him a you-better-not-say-anything smile.

"Right nothing at all," Dylan agreed smiling toward Emma.

"Great lets dig in," Emma sang. As soon as Emma turned toward her back toward the brownies I sent Dylan my signature scowl and he returned it.

This is going to be a long day.
