Roger showed up a couple of hours later. He looked incredibly frazzled and worried as he stepped into the interview room.
"Wooyoung, thank god. What happened? I just got that you were at the police station but they wouldn't give me any details. I-" He stopped when Wooyoung hurried forward and hugged him.
It felt good to see another familiar face, and Wooyoung knew he could count on Roger to help him get out of this. He was the closest thing to a dad he had...
"Woo..." Roger said hesitantly, cupping the back of his head.
Officer Barnes stood from his chair and cleared his throat, "I'll give you some time. I just need to make sure I have everything I need, then you are free to go home."
"What is going on?" Roger asked softly.
Yeosang and San shared the story, allowing Wooyoung to zone out so he didn't have to relive it for the third time today. It just made it seem even more real.
He felt so disgusting... The first thing he wanted to do when he got out of here was take a shower. He needed to wash the previous night away.
Then he needed to decide what to do about Lila.
She needed to know. But he didn't want to tell her while she was dealing with her dad... that would only push things to the side and give her conflicted feelings.
No... He would hide it for now and wait for her to come home.
But he would make sure to call her. He needed to hear her voice right now. Just something...
Roger didn't ask too many questions. He just stood there, holding Wooyoung to his chest as he was filled in on what had happened.
"Thank you for telling me, boys. I will see what I need to do to get this taken care of..." He sounded hesitant and shifted a little. "I think I can get most of the interview cancelled, but we still have the big entertainment interview that I don't think we cancel if we want the movie to do well. But I will make it happen if I need to."
"No..." Wooyoung said softly. "As long as I'm not alone with her I... I think I will be ok. Too many innocent people will be affected if the movie does poorly. But I will never work with her again." He looked up at Roger who nodded once. But there was a proud glint in his eye as he brought Wooyoung's head back to his chest.
"We can do that. So just that interview and the premier, then you are all done and I'd say you earned a well deserved break." Roger whispered. "I will keep this out of the press too. Did anyone see you come here?"
"We don't think so." San said. "But we did come here quickly."
"Well we will cross that bridge when we get there then. It's going to be ok. You can count on me." Roger said, his voice getting a little stronger.
The door to the room opened up again and Officer Barnes stepped inside. "Alright, we have everything we need. Are you going to be ok, son?"
"I don't know..." Wooyoung whispered, stepping back from Roger to look at the officer. "But thank you for..."
The man shook his head and held up his hands. "I'm just doing my job. We will get that drug test done as soon as possible. If we can't get ahold of you then we will call your manager."
"Please do." Roger said. "It will be easier for me to answer the phone depending on where he's at in his schedule."
Officer Barnes nodded and wrote down the instructions in Wooyoung's file. "And just to check one more time, you don't want us to contact your parents?"
"No. You probably wouldn't reach them anyway." Wooyoung looked down and closed his eyes when he felt Yeosang's hand on his back.
"Alright. The front is clear, I already had some of my fellow officers check. You should be able to get out of here just fine. Here's my card, please contact me if you remember anything else or need anything."
Wooyoung accepted the card and tucked it into his pocket with a grateful smile. He felt a shred of relief, knowing that things were going to be handled, or at least looked in to.
Roger led him out of the station and to his car. "Where do you want to go?" His manager asked gently. "Do you want to go back to your apartment?"
"No. She knows where that is... Can you take me to San's? Please?" He asked, staring at the dashboard.
"Sure. What's the address?"
Wooyoung nodded and plugged it into Roger's phone. They pulled away slowly, Yeosang and San following behind them, and made the long drive back to the condo where he felt most at home right now.
Roger parked in front of the condo, allowing Yeosang to pull into the small driveway. "Do you want me to stay?"
"No... I know you've got a lot to do. I'm sorry." Wooyoung felt his hands starting to shake.
The older man leaned forward and envelopes Wooyoung's hands in his own. "Don't. Don't apologize for this. None of this was your fault, ok? I'm here to help you get through this. I'm not going to leave you behind."
Wooyoung looked up at Roger and leaned forward so his forehead was resting on Roger's shoulder.
They stayed there for a few minutes before Wooyoung slipped out of the car and met his friends at the front door.
San let them in and Wooyoung immediately went to Lila's room. He didn't want to think or feel anymore. He just wanted to forget about everything.
"Can we get you anything?" Yeosang asked from the door.
"No." Wooyoung said quietly as he ran his hand over Lila's comforter. "What do I say...?"
Yeosang and San rushed to his side an pulled him into another hug. That answered his question. None of them knew what to tell Lila either. Not with what was going on with her.
None of them had spoken to her all day...
Taking a deep breath, Yeosang handed Wooyoung his phone. "Call her. I know you need it. But... I'd gauge the tone of her voice and the conversation before you decide to tell her over the phone."
"I agree." San said as he cringed at the thought. "I honestly don't know how she'd take it... And I have no idea how she is doing right now. Actually, why don't we all call her? We can do it on speaker, that way you have us for support. We can always leave after we see how she's doing."
Wooyoung nodded, liking the sound of that. They all took a seat on Lila's bed and listened to the ringing while waiting for her to pick up.
"Hey! I was just thinking about you." Lila said. The smile he could hear in her voice instantly made him feel better.
"How are things going?" Wooyoung tried to keep his voice strong. For her.
Her voice got soft for a second and he realized she wasn't talking to him, "Yeah, I'll be right back.... Yes, Dad... Yes, it's him..." Wooyoung could practically hear the blush coming to her cheeks. His heart pounded at the thought of her dad knowing about him.
Lila had told her dad. Someone finally knew about them. The thought made him so happy that Wooyoung beamed as he stared at the phone.
"Sorry, I needed to step out of my dad's room." Lila said, keeping her voice low. "I'm heading to a waiting room, give me just a second."
"You're fine." Wooyoung chuckled.
Lila's voice became distant again, "Hi Hongjoong, I'm just taking a phone call so I'll be in here.... Thanks...."
A door closed. San rested his head on Wooyoung's shoulder while they waited for Lila to get settled.
"Ok, I'm here. How are you baby?"
"We are doing good." San interjected when Wooyoung hesitated.
"Hi Lila." Yeosang added.
"Oh! You're all here! I miss you guys, so much."
"And we miss you. How's your dad? How have things been?" San leaned forward to cup his chin in his hand.
"Things with Dad are going ok as they can be. We've actually been bonding quite a bit." She sighed and Wooyoung could hear the shift in her voice. "I've been gone for so long and missed so much... He's been following my articles. He has every single one of them."
Wooyoung exchanged a glance with San and saw tears in the older's eyes.
"He said to tell you hi, San. He wishes you could be here, but he understands that things are busy for you and he wanted to tell me how proud of you he is."
San covered his mouth as his shoulders started to shake. "I wish I could be there to see him too."
"And... He wishes he could meet you, Wooyoung. He's very happy for us."
Wooyoung inhaled deeply, wanting nothing more than to be with her. "Tell him I wish I could meet him too."
She chuckled a little. "So something else happened." She started hesitantly.
"What?" San and Wooyoung said at the same time.
"Mom showed up..."
"No!" San said, his eyes widening. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine San." Lila said quickly. "She didn't know I was here. Dad's doctor gave me a heads up and I was able to hide. I don't think they could keep her out because they are still legally married. Mom refused to sign the divorce papers, and Dad just gave up. She's delusional though. She thinks he has all this money tucked away and is determined to get it..."
"Now that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." San growled. "How dare she come in and accuse him of hiding money from her with everything that's going on."
Wooyoung nodded in agreement, even though he knew she couldn't see. He hoped that Lila was able to leave before she had to deal with her mom anymore... Especially with no one there to help her.
"Dad put her in her place though. He asked if she was there to finish the job and she got flustered. I'm glad to see he is standing up for himself." Lila said, a mix of pain and pride in her voice.
The four of them sat in silence for a long moment, then Yeosang asked the question that was in the back of everyone's mind. "Have they given a timeline yet?"
"No." Lila whispered. "I'm sure they... Could speed up the process if he wanted them too." Her voice started to shake. "But now that I'm h-here I d-doubt he would want-t that. It's... It's alm-most like he was waiting f-for me to come."
Wooyoung wanted nothing more than to be at her side right now. He didn't even know what to say to try and comfort her.
This was not the time to tell her what had happened to him...
No... He would keep that to herself until she got back. If he even got the courage to tell her at all.
A muffled voice came in the background. "Ok. I'll be there in a minute." Lila said, then sighed.
"It's ok, we can talk later." Wooyoung closed his eyes and forced the pain out of his voice. "You have things to do."
"Yeah, we'll talk to later. Bye Lila-lou." San said with a giggle and Lila groaned.
"Take care." Yeosang said, standing up to pull San from the room.
"Bye guys."
Wooyoung chewed on his lip until the door closed. "Are you going to be ok?"
"Yes baby, I'll be ok. I miss you."
"I miss you too." He had to work really hard to keep his voice steady. He couldn't show weakness right now. He had to be strong for her...
"I'm sorry I have to go so soon, they just have a few things they want to go over with me... When is your interview again? I want to make sure we watch it, if I'm still here."
"It's a week from tomorrow. The day after tomorrow is the official premier, then the big interview is next week." Wooyoung's chest tightened at the thought that she might not be back in time for the interview, but he completely understood why. Just the thought of her watching it was good enough for him.
"Alright, I'll make sure I'm watching so I can support you. I'm sure everything is going to be great, and I can't wait to see the movie." Lila said, and he could once again hear the smile in her voice.
"I love you, Lila, so much."
"I love you too, baby. I'll talk to you later, ok?"
Wooyoung swallowed the lump in his throat. "Yeah, I'll talk to you later. Keep me updated."
"I will. I promise."
As soon as they ended the call, Wooyoung cradled under the comforter and shoved his nose into Lila's pillow, letting her sweet scent wash over him and help him relax as he tried to push the bad memories of the day away.
For now, he could pretend that he was next to her and that everything would be ok.
