III
When I finally accepted that I was not going to fall back to sleep, I threw the covers aside with a groan and blinked several times in an attempt to adjust my eyes to the brightness.
I laid there for a moment, hearing snores from the other rooms in the house and grumbled. The clock beside me said 11:47am, so I got up and went to the bathroom. I took a quick shower and brushed my teeth and threw some cutoffs on.
I opened the door to my room, where Leah was. She was tangled up in my dark blue sheets, so —thank god— I couldn't see anything. I opened the blinds and tapped on her head, tugging her hair slightly.
She made a small noise and then her eyes shot open.
I jumped back slightly, not expecting her to wake up right away. "Geez," I muttered. I wonder if she actually listened to me about wearing clothes or not.
"Get out," she mumbled, running a hand through her short, black hair. "I'm naked."
I crinkled my nose and cringed. "God, you were doing so well at 'get out.' Gross."
I watched her face slightly fall at my disgusted expression and I let out a small sigh. "Sorry," I grumbled. "But I'm not looking for a beating," I said and got up, walking out of the room, over to Renesmee's.
"Hey, you up?" I asked with a smile, seeing as she was dressed and making her bed. I stood by the doorway and crossed my arms, leaning against it with a smile on my face.
She nodded with a giggle and ran towards me, hugging me tight.
"Hey, kid," I grinned and picked her up, kissing her head. "How'd you sleep? Was the bed comfy?"
"Yes, it was and I slept good," she responded, smiling. She wiggled out of my grip and jumped down, grabbing some of her toys and putting them into her bags. "Are we going to the park after breakfast?"
Crap, I forgot about that. "Sure. You just have to promise to not tell your parents, yeah?"
She giggled and nodded, hugged my legs again and then ran out of the room, probably to get food.
I yawned and walked out as well, seeing Quil and Embry snoring away on the couch. Who knows how long they stayed up till.
I decided to leave them be, knowing they wouldn't wake up from us. Leah was sitting on the couch, eating a bowl of blueberries and strawberries.
I crinkled my nose again. We had eggs and bacon and good food, why would she go for the fruit?
"Fruit is delicious, my Jacob," Renesmee said, gazing at me and my gaze.
"Sure, sure," I mumbled and picked her up, sitting her on the counter. "Now, whaddya want for breakfast? I can't cook much besides eggs and bacon. Or we can go get something."
"Eggs and bacon is okay," she giggled.
I nodded and kissed her forehead and bent down to the fridge, grabbing some eggs and bacon. "Scrambled or sunny side up?"
"Scrambled."
"How much bacon?" I questioned, grabbing the three packets of bacon.
"Three strips will be alright," she responded, turning on the stove.
I thanked her and nodded.
I began to cook the food for her and I and cursed mildly when the oil burned my hand. I looked at her apologetically. "My bad."
"It's okay. I've heard that word before. Uncle Emmett gets upset when his favorite team loses, and that happens quite a lot," she said with a small smile. She hopped down from the counter and began to get plates and utensils.
I chuckled and nodded and put her food on a plate she had given me and gave the plate back to her. "There you go," I hummed.
"Thank you, Jacob."
"'Course, Ness."
"Lee, you want some bacon? I'll save a strip for you!" I called out over my shoulder, putting some of my bacon onto the plate. I hoped my eggs hadn't gotten cold.
"No," she responded in a monotone voice, not bothering to look at me.
I just shrugged and turned the stove off, put the pan in the sink and went to the table with Ness and ate.
I wondered what Leah's problem was and then I realized I didn't care.
I wolfed down the food and eyed the piece of bacon on Renesmee's plate, still hungry.
"You can have it, I don't want it."
"You sure?" I asked. I felt bad, taking her food, but unless she reassured me it was okay, I wouldn't touch it.
She nodded. "Yes, it's okay. I'm full."
"Thanks." Then I ate it.
She got up, putting her plate in the sink and I did the same as her when I had finished. I picked her up, throwing her over my shoulder as I grabbed her bags from her room, putting it in the front room.
"You ready for the park?" Leah asked, standing up with the bowl in her hands.
Renesmee squealed and nodded, kicking her little feet.
I chuckled quietly, took the bowl from Lee and put it on the sink, then made my way to the door to put my shoes on.
"Jacob?" Leah questioned.
I set Renesmee down so she could get ready. "Hmm?" I asked, confused as I looked up at her, since I was sitting down.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" She asked me, eyeing my chest.
My eyebrows furrowed and I looked down. Nothing was wrong. I was wearing pants and I had shoes on. "No?"
"A shirt."
"I don't need one," I responded, making a face at her. "It's too hot."
"I don't care. You're not going to a park full of little kids and not wearing a shirt," she said.
I glared at her. "I don't wanna wear one."
"Too bad, you're gonna," Leah snapped, grabbing one of my shirts and throwing it at me.
"Thanks," I muttered sarcastically and put it on over my head.
Renesmee took my hand and dragged me out the door and over to the Rabbit, opening the door and pushing me into the drivers seat.
I watched her and Leah get in, Leah going in the back and Nessie in the front. I yawned slightly and began to drive, going to the playground in Forks.
I had only been a couple of times, from when I was little and Bella would come to Washington. She complained about not wanting to come to La Push, so we would meet her at the playground in Forks, while the adults would just drink beer and talk.
I parked the car, scanning the area of a bunch of little kids screaming and laughing on toys. I grumbled and opened the car door for Renesmee and closed it when she got out.
"Okay, rules," I mumbled to her. "You must act human. Stay at human speed and don't be strong. Remember, you're about five, okay? And the biggest rule ever, no biting people, okay?"
She furrowed her brows at me and crossed her arms. "My Jacob, I am not going to bite anyone!" She exclaimed like I was dumb.
"Yeah, well these kids don't heal. So no biting," Leah had snapped.
I shot her a glare and she glared right back at me. "Go play, Ness," I said to her and watch as she ran off.
I walked with Leah over to this giant plastic rock and watched Nessie sprint onto the ply structure, finding some kids to play with.
"She's cute," Leah grumbled, looking over at me.
"Ness?" I asked, my left eyebrow arched. I tried to follow her gaze when she looked far ahead of us.
"Yeah," she said. "Even if she is a spawn."
I glared at her, my hands lightly shaking. "She's not a spawn," I said, my teeth clenched. "She's a hybrid. Half human, half vampire."
"Spawn, hybrid, same thing. Well, it means the same thing, anyways," she said.
I scoffed, looking into the distance. "Yeah, right. Whatever, Leah. You're just a bitter harpy."
She smacked my arm and I winced, trying not to show that she had hurt me.
"I'm not a bitter harpy," she snapped at me, a permanent scowl on her face.
"Yeah, you are. Maybe not a harpy. But you're pretty bitter," I snapped back at her.
I heard a scream and immediately looked over, trying to find Nessie.
My eyes went wide open.
"Fuck," Leah muttered and sprinted towards Renesmee who was attacking this younger boy.
Leah pulled Renesmee off of the blonde boy, who was now crying. "Renesmee, stop!" Leah yelled. Renesmee stopped wiggling around and huffed, crossing her arms.
The blonde mom was holding her kid back, apologizing to Leah, while Leah was just glaring at the kid and holding onto Renesmee.
"Hey, I'll take her," I muttered to Lee. She transferred Renesmee to my arms and I carried her over to the benches.
Renesmee sniffled and sat on my lap, curling into my chest and I felt her tears dampen my shirt.
"Wanna tell me what happened?" I asked softly. I wrapped my arms around her and rubbed her back, noticing the mud she had on her little jeans.
She shook her head and sniffled.
"You're not in trouble, okay? I just want to know what happened, Ness. Tell me, please?"
"The boy pushed her into the mud." I turned my gaze up to Leah who spoke. Her hands were lightly shaking and I gave her a look.
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and slight anger. "What, why?"
"He thought Nessie was cheating," Leah grumbled. She leaned her head on my shoulder and picked Renesmee up, holding her close and running her hand through Nessie's bronze locks.
"That's ridiculous! Ness never cheats!" I exclaimed. This didn't make any sense.
Leah just shrugged at me and motioned to the little kid who was crying to his mom, while his mom just glared at him, walking out of the park.
I snickered softly and then turned my attention back to Ness.
"You'll be okay, kiddo," I murmured and patted her back. "Want us to take you home?"
Renesmee nodded, a slight smile on her lips. She must've been feeling better already.
Leah got up, carrying Renesmee and I followed behind. I opened the doors for them and waited for them to get in and then began to drive.
"So, Ness," I mumbled, turning to look at her. "Can you not tell your parents about this?" I asked, sending her a grin.
"Don't worry, my Jacob. I'll try my best to occupy my thoughts with something else," she said, lookin at me.
I sighed in relief and nodded. "Thanks."
She giggled and nodded, reaching over to switch the radio station to something she liked.
I glanced at Lee through the mirror and she just glared at me. I furrowed my brows, and glanced back at the road, turning into the forest where the Cullens lived.
Leah sure was acting different today, which was weird. I mean, she always acted different, but today she was off and it pissed me off.
I got out the car after parking and grabbed Nessie's things, walking into the mansion. "Hello?" I called out while walking up the stairs.
Bella and Edward rushed down and I grinned at him.
His eyebrows scrunched and he glared at me. "You took her to the park?"
Crap.
I sent him an uneasy grin and slightly coughed. "Uh, yeah, WE did." I glanced back at Leah who just glared at me.
"It was your call!" She hissed, standing next to me.
"Shush! Just take the blame with me!" I pleaded.
She just rolled her eyes and turned to Edward.
"Renesmee!" Bella called out. "Oh what happened to your jeans? They're all muddy and dirty!"
Edward quietly explained what had happened and I just awkwardly held Renesmee's things in my hands.
Renesmee hugged Bella and walked upstairs with her, holding her hand. Nessie waved bye to us and I grinned lazily at her.
"We would've taken her," Edward snapped at me.
For some reason, I seemed to want to shrink down to the floor, melt and go flow down into a sewer.
"After we made sure there were no problems, and everything would be okay," Edward continued.
"You can't blame us!" Leah exclaimed, stepping towards him.
My eyes widened and I grabbed her by her hips pulling her back. I let out an uneasy laugh. "Edward, nothing too serious happened. She just got a bit dirty and hit the kid. It's not like she got hurt. She's a strong kid, she's okay."
"No. What's so wrong that you felt the need to go behind our backs and not tell us?" Edward demanded. He had his arms crossed and he tapped his foot angrily.
"You never let her do anything!" I exclaimed, looking down at him.
"And you let her do everything!" Edward yelled. He seemed to be closer to me than I remembered.
Bella came downstairs, standing next to Edward and I watched as Leah made her way upstairs.
Renesmee POV
"God, your dad is so annoying," Leah muttered, slipping into my room. She sat on the bed and then laid down, a moment later on her back.
My eyebrows furrowed and I watched as she grabbed my cow—Cowy and messed around with it. "No he isn't. He just has a different way of seeing things than you and Jacob do," I answered.
She just rolled her eyes. "He's no fun," she responded. "Got any games to play?" She asked, scanning my room.
"You don't ever want to play my games," I pointed out.
"Oh yeah, right."
I rarely used this room, it was just when my parents wanted to be alone in our little cottage and I had to come here to stay. I preferred my room in my house, but this did. The bed wasn't as comfortable as my pink bed at home. When Leah began to bang Cowy against my leg, I suspected she wanted me to distract her.
The yelling downstairs increased and I looked at Leah who was now tossing Cowy in the air, making it flip and then land on her chest. "Please, Nessie? I'm in the mooo-d for a game."
I glared at her. "Not funny."
"Please, that was hilarious. You have no sense of humor. Come on, let's do something."
I sighed and laid down next to her, grabbing Cowy and hugging him tightly. "You were sad when Sam broke up with you, weren't you, Leah?" I asked softly, turning my head to face her.
She did not face me, she had her hands on her stomach and she looked at the ceiling. "Yes."
"It was different with you and him, wasn't it?" My voice was quiet and hesitant, not wanting to offend her.
"Yeah, it was."
"You really did love him?" I asked her.
She still did not take her she's off of the ceiling, but she nodded. "Yeah, I did."
"And not anymore?" I asked.
"I've gotten over it. Yeah, it hurts, but I understand that he didn't have a choice. Of course, I don't talk to him and Emily, but I don't blame them completely anymore, I guess that's what I'm trying to say."
I nodded at her and messed around with Cowy. "Do you forgive them?" I asked.
She finally turned to me and had a sad smile on her face. "I guess I do," she murmured. "Not Emily, but Sam I do."
I nodded, deciding to not push it anymore and the door once opened.
I hadn't noticed that it was completely silent.
"C'mon, Lee. We're being exiled." Jacob was leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed, looking at us. "Banished and to never return!" He was dramatic, the back of his hand over his forehead and pretending to faint. "Until next week. Then we can take Nessie wherever she wants to go." His voice was back to his lazy tone.
I giggled and looked up at him, grinning.
"Cool. Now take me home, I smell of leeches," Leah grumbled.
"Sure, sure," he muttered. Before he left, he came over and kissed my head and gave me a quick hug to say goodbye. "Make sure you think about how excited you are to see me all throughout this week, okay?" He grinned. He patted my shoulder and then pulled away from me.
I just giggled at him. "Okay, my Jacob. I'll see you in a week," I told him. I watched as he walked towards the door and took Leah's hand, walking out of the door.
Him taking her hand should've bothered me, but for some reason, it didn't.
