The Fire

Opening his eyes, he saw a dense black fog around him.

The room was lit strangely and his lungs burned.

He felt light and he couldn't breathe, coughing badly as he laid practically paralyzed. His head hurt like hell and something caked his head. A liquid of some sort.

Nothing really went around in his head but he did realize that what was surrounding him wasn't actually black fog but smoke and it was filling up the room he was in. It was getting hotter and hotter and that's when he understood

The room he was in was on fire.

He didn't really have time, though, to panic. Didn't have time to wonder.

'What's happening? Where am I'?

Then a bigger question hit him.

'Who am I?'

He heard banging on the door and he tried coughing out something but it was too much for him.

He felt himself slipping.

He barely heard someone yelling and trying to pick him up.

Then he passed out.

Jackie had heard of a fire nearby that started in an apartment building downtown. Being as quick as he was, he managed to get there right on time with the fire department to help evacuate the building.

The fire was growing large but they would be able to put it out. It seemed to start in one of the rooms but a firefighter went in to save whoever was inside. He didn't see who it was or what they looked like but he did hear they were injured pretty badly and had to take them to the hospital.

After evacuating the building, the firefighters were finishing up putting out the flames. Luckily it hadn't been burning too long before one of the other residents called for help.

'I wonder what happened' Jackie had always been curious and was sympathetic for whoever lived in that apartment. And to hear they had to be carted off to the hospital?

'I should drop by later and see how they're doing. Henrik will know.'

For now, he went up to one of the firefighters, "Hey, do you know what may have started the fire?"

The woman shook her head, "Not exactly but it looked to be on purpose. We don't know what happened to the resident but once they wake up I'm sure they'll be able to let the police know"

Jackie nodded, "Right. Thanks."

"Any time, Jackie. Stay safe, alright? Take some time off for fucks sake" she laughed.

Jackie chuckled with her and shook his head, "Aw, you know I can't do that!"

"You're gonna go see him, aren't you? The resident?" people knew him too well in this city. Especially Firefighters, Police and doctors.

Jackie had done a lot for this city.

He shrugged, "Maybe~"

"Well just go easy on them, alright? They might be traumatized considering the big gash in their head. Poor thing looked like his skull split"

"Damn. Alright, you have my word. No interrogating the patient. I'll see ya later!" he waved them all off and set course for the hospital. He couldn't wait. He needed to know if this person was going to be okay and what exactly happened to cause that fire.

Henrik was having a busy day already. He performed a few surgeries and helped the ER with a few emergencies but the last thing he was expecting was another patient near-death so late on his shift.

The ambulance rushed in quickly, wheeling in the patient on a gurney. They had on an oxygen mask and suffered a few burns along with a split skull. Henrik could see the blood from yards away and he rushed over, not even bothering yet to look at their face.

The person's skin was smoke stained and dirty, their hair slightly greasy and caked in blood. Barely breathing.

"Get him over there! Zhat bed!" Henrik shouted at them. They worked quickly to set him on the bed and Henrik worked on checking his head wound immediately. The boy whined while unconscious and Henrik hushed him instinctively, stopping the bleeding and stitching up the wound.

The nurses worked on helping to clean him, getting the black smoke stains off his skin and putting ointment on him for the few burns he had. They weren't too bad but still needed treated.

He was breathing okay for now but Henrik wanted to keep him on oxygen just in case.

When he was finished stitching the head wound, he allowed the nurse to wipe his face and the doctor finally actually LOOKED at him.

"My god" he breathed out, forgetting that the nurses were still there, "Zhe fook?"

Chase heard about the fire on the TV and immediately his mind went to Jackie and Henrik, knowing they'd be involved in the aftermath somewhat. JJ and Marvin sat with him. They had been waiting on the other two to come home to join them for dinner but it didn't look like that was going to happen any time soon.

"They said a resident had to be taken to the hospital" Marvin commented, "The resident lived in the apartment where the fire started. You think they started it?"

Chase shrugged, "You mean on purpose or accident? I don't know, man." he tilted back a beer with a hum, "They said he was injured. I say it had to have been an accident"

'Or perhaps attempted suicide?' JJ suggested.

"Geez, that's dark" Marvin snorted, "I don't think so but I guess we'll find out whenever Red gets back"

"Please stop calling him that."

"Why?" Marvin teased, "He likes that name"

"It gives him an ego."

"We ARE egos"

"Marv" Chase warned, shoving him playfully, "Ugh whatever. Jackie will know. Henrik will, too, I imagine. Now we play the waiting game"

"How much you wanna bet Jackie's heading to the hospital right now?"

"He's such a glory hog. And he just NEEDS to know something before anyone else" Chase rolled his eyes. Clearly he disapproved of that part of Jackie.

'Maybe he just wants to make sure they're okay?' JJ signed.

"Either way" Marvin sighed, lifting himself off the couch, "I'll go put their dinner in the microwave for them for when they get home."

He shuddered as he slowly woke up. All he could feel was as if the world was spinning. He felt so light and weird. He didn't like it.

He tried whining a little only to start coughing through something. He felt it up his nose and in his mouth. Something was on his face and he started freaking out.

Then he heard someone else in the room. The person hushed him softly and gently removed the oxygen mask on him. He coughed again as it came out but it was easier to breathe. He started to calm back down but he still felt so light-headed.

"Can you hear me?" a hand gently shook him, "You know where you are?"

He squinted his eyes open, blinking at the blaring light in the room. He hummed at the irritation but nodded anyways as an answer, his throat hurting.

"Can you talk to me? Anti?"

That confused him.

He opened his eyes more, ignoring the way his head swam and looked at the person talking to him. He was still shivering from the medication that was given to him but thankfully the nurses seemed to have given him heated blankets.

"Um . . " his voice felt scratchy, "Hospital?"

The man above him nodded albeit warily. He looked to be a doctor wearing scrubs and white jacket. He kept on a surgical mask but he could tell one thing that his eyes were blue and he had a strange voice. He felt as if it were. . . different from his own. Accented?

Then he remembered what the man said after he asked that one question, "Wh . . . .what's an. . . Anti?"

The doctor looked worried but seemed accustomed to having a good poker face, "Oh uh . . . Tis your name. You do not remember?"

He looked up at him, blinking his eyes some more, "N-no. . . . . . That's my. . . . name? It's . . .weird."

The man pulled down his mask and stared at him seriously, "Do you really not remember, Anti? Do you . . . remember anything? Do you know who I am?"

Anti tried to remember. He saw the man's face but when he tried to think, his head hurt and he grimaced, "Ow. . . . . N-no. I don't. M-my head hurts"

"Ah . . . . yes well" Henrik didn't know exactly how to put it, "You were in a fire, Anti. It seems you might have fallen and hit your head, splitting your skull. I should have known you'd probably suffer something like zhis with that sort of injury"

"L-like what?"

"Amnesia, Anti." the doctor sighed, "You have amnesia. Vould explain why you do not remember anything. Why you don't remember me. Vhat DO you remember?"

"Mmm." Anti tried to think but really all he knew now was he was in a fire, hit his head, couldn't remember anything and that his name was Anti and this doctor might know him with the way he was talking to him.

"Nothing." he finally said, "Wh-what's your name again? Why do I feel. . . . so weird?"

"My name is Henrik. Doctor Henrik Von Schneeplestein. We had to give you some pain medication but you should feel better soon."

"Wh-when can I go?"

"Vhy. . . vhy would you want to go?"

"I'd . . . owe more money. . . .right? Unless. . . do I know someone here? I wanna go home" he whined again, "I'd have. . . . a friend or family, right? Or. . .am I alone?"

The very thought brought fear in his heart. He didn't want to be alone right now.

But this doctor seemed nice. Maybe he could tell him things about him? He seemed to know his name.

But Henrik didn't really know what to say to that.

Neither he nor the other other egos had seen Anti in four years. Jackie had been trying to find him for so long after all the trouble he put them through but could never find him. Turns out he was right under their noses this whole time living his own life. But what happened in that apartment?

"Do not worry about money at a time like zhis." was all he could say but that didn't seem to calm Anti.

He stared at him, making the doctor uncomfortable, "Am. . . am I alone? N-no one's . . .. here for me?"

Henrik swallowed. His heart hurt but then again he couldn't help but to feel somewhat satisfied. Anti had hurt them all and now he was getting what he deserved.

Too bad he couldn't remember why.

Henrik was about to say something more when there was a knock on the door.

The doctor jumped up and turned to see Jackie standing there and he stood in front of Anti so Jackie couldn't see his face, "Jackie! Vhat are you doing here!? I've told you millions of times you cannot do zhis!"

"I just wanted to see how he was doing"

Henrik was worried now, though. If Jackie saw who was in the bed, he might freak out and try to kill him on sight.

"He is fine! He needs rest! Get out! Go back home and I'll tell you more when I get off my shift!"

"Geez, man, no need to be so protective!" Jackie laughed, "Anyone get a hold of his family yet?"

Henrik gave him a look and Jackie froze a bit, "Oh. . . . sorry. I'll uh . .. . see you later then, Hen."

Jackie was just about to walk out when Anti coughed and Henrik turned just right to check on him.

"You need oxygen mask again? It'll help-"

"Henrik" Jackie growled dangerously and the doctor could feel his rage at the door.

The doctor knew Jackie saw but held himself over Anti, "Just leave, Jackie. I'll explain later."

"Explain now!" Jackie stomped in the room and slammed the door behind them making Anti flinch.

He shivered in fear at the man's anger. Did HE know him? Anti looked over at him only to be met with eyes full of hate. It was a look that wanted him dead. Anti's heart rate spiked and the machine hooked up to him beeped faster. Henrik heard it and tried comforting him, still holding himself still so Jackie couldn't attack.

"I mean it, Jackie. At least wait outside. You are scaring him."

"Good! I sure as fuck hope so! What's this little bastard doing here, Henrik, and WHY are you treating him like a fucking CHILD!?"

Henrik turned to face him, "Get zhe fook out of the room and stop scaring my patient! Get out NOW. . .. before I call security!"

"You wouldn't-"

"Try me"

Jackie glared at both at them for a few moments. Henrik was so serious about this. But it's been so long . . . he had done so much to them. Why was he protecting him? There had to be a reason, though, right? But it really didn't make any sense!

He finally sighed and stomped out of the room, slamming the door again behind him.

Anti flinched again, staring at the door. He looked up at Henrik for answers but the doctor couldn't give any.

"I am sorry, Anti. I do not know if I should be helping you. . . . but I know I made a vow to help those in need." he groaned to himself, "Try not to think too much on vhat Jackie said. Just rest, alright? You'll feel better in zhe morning."

Anti tried moving but that's when he finally realized.

He thought it was just a hospital bracelet on his wrist.

No.

They were handcuffs. He was handcuffed to the bed.

What the hell did he do to these people?
