Awkward Agreements

"I presume you're wondering why you're handcuffed?"

The look Anti gave him was enough and Henrik seemed uncomfortable telling him.

"I vas not certain if you would. . . .  attack someone or not. I am sorry but zhis is merely a precaution"

"But. . . . I don't even know you." he coughed but tried to keep it down. Henrik reached for a glass of water he didn't see before and handed it to the hand that wasn't cuffed. Anti guzzled down as much as he could, ignoring the tickling in his throat and the need to cough even more.

"Easy there" the doctor warned, "Don't vant to choke"

"Wh-when can these come off then? Or. . . . am I going to jail!?" he suddenly panicked, "Is that why that other man was so angry at me? Am I-?"

"Do not worry about it" Henrik tried calming him down. Although. . .  he really didn't know himself. It wasn't up to him. It was a decision that ALL of them would have to come to.

"Now I need to go speak with Jackie. You just rest for now. Go to sleep. You've had a long day. It is safe for you to sleep now and zhe more you sleep, the faster you might remember things. Sleep heals!"

"What if I don't want to remember?"

Henrik ignored the question, "Just go to sleep. You can trust me" He went to leave but Anti stopped him again.

"Wait! C-can you put the bed up a little? My neck is sore laying like this"

The doctor swallowed hard at that but played it off, "Ah yes" he fixed the bed so he was sitting up a tad, "Is that better?"

"Yeah" He seemed so sad and pathetic in that moment. Henrik didn't actually want to leave him but if he didn't, Jackie might come storming in again.

"If you need to go to zhe bathroom, push that button and I will come back to help you. Or a nurse can if you'd prefer" he took the chance to rush out of the door. Jackie was waiting for him outside of it with a snarl on this features.

Anti laid there in the bed deep in thought but every time he tried to remember something, his head just hurt, bring aching pain.

The pain medication had worn off by now and he could feel every burn on him. It didn't hurt much now but he didn't mind.

A different kind of pain was bugging him right now. His heart hurt every time he moved his arm, hearing the clanking of metal on the bed from the handcuffs.

'What did I do to them? But the doctor seems really nice. The other guy in red looked like he wanted to kill me though. I must have hurt someone'

His throat was bothering him again but it wasn't on the inside. The skin just felt sort of itchy. He lifted his free hand to itch it only to feel a weird line of really smooth skin.

'What is that? A scar?' he sighed and stared up at the ceiling, 'Was I hurt? Seems like a scar from a while ago if it's healed over like that . . . .  Did the guy in red do it to me? Seems like he would.'

He heard yelling suddenly from outside but he couldn't make out the words. He knew they were yelling about him though. He may have lost his memories but he wasn't stupid.

'Should I try and break for it? What if that man actually does try and kill me? The cuffs though . . . .' he was trapped. Anti didn't want to move his head around too much but he was getting nervous.

Now way he could sleep like this.

He at least wished the doctor would come back.

Jackie was furious. Royally pissed off, "How can you just stand there and treat him so nicely?"

Henrik crossed his arms, "You do not understand, Jackie. Anti is not himself at the moment. Might not be for a long while"

"What are you talking about? Bastard looks fine to me. I say we either take him in or take him out"

"He has amnesia, Jackie" Henrik clarified, "He does not remember"

The hero was quiet for a moment but snorted, chuckling a little, "You serious? And you believe him?"

"I don't have to. The wound on his head is proof enough. He suffered pretty severe brain damage. I had to stitch him up. Luckily he does not need a metal plate in his head. Look, you do not have to believe him-"

"You're damn right I don't! This is ANTI we're talking about here! The man who singlehandedly fucked us all over and tried to kill us! Don't YOU remember THAT!?"

"Of course I do!" Henrik snapped back but took a breather, noticing some people watching them, "His first words to me when he woke up were, ' What's an Anti?'. He did not remember what his name was CLEARLY."

"Doesn't excuse anything" Jackie wasn't willing to let this go, "Even if he's telling the truth, he'll remember eventually. Then he'll disappear off the grid again and we'll lose our chance!"

"Vhat do you propose then? I am not just going to hand him over to you, Jackie. You'll mistreat him. And right now he's scared. Think about him as an innocent citizen right now. He was already scared and then you came in like that!"

Jackie visibly relaxed suddenly. He hadn't really thought of it like that. He should have but. . . this was Anti.

They were created to be natural enemies. He couldn't think of him any other way. But the way Henrik was talking about it. . . .made sense.

He sighed, "Fine. . . .  but we can't just leave him here either. The board won't pay for it, right? He's got to stay somewhere and his apartment is burnt to a crisp"

Henrik muttered something in German and bit his lip, "I vas thinking. . . perhaps we could have him stay with us? That way we could all keep an eye on him."

Jackie looked to argue but Henrik stopped him, "Think about it, Jackie. This could be our chance, yeah? We could change, Anti. If we treat him well enough. . . . perhaps when he remembers. . . he'll be . . .  different"

"Wishful thinking, Hen." Jackie shook his head but rolled his eyes, "But you do have a point in doing it to keep an eye on him. Fine. In the morning we'll take him home with us. I'll let the others know we're staying the night here"

"You can go home. I am perfectly capable of taking care of my patient alone"

"Patient" Jackie scoffed lightly, "I'm staying if only out here just in case. No arguing"

"Ah vhatever. Fine. I will call Marvin, though, and let him know so he can tell the others. You stay out here like a creep"

"I'm not a creep!"

"Keep telling yourself zhat" the doctor chuckled, "I need to do some paperwork and then be right back. Don't go in zhere. Promise?"

Jackie hated that. He WAS going to go in and have a . . .talk with Anti. But Henrik knew that if he made him promise. . . . .let's just say that that was a good weakness of his. He could never just break a promise.

"Fine" he nodded, "I promise, Hen. I'll be right here until you come back"

Henrik nodded and walked off, trusting Jackie to keep his word.

Henrik went to his office, placing files haphazardly on his desk and dialed Marvin's number on his cell. It rang a couple times and the more it did, the more Henrik grew nervous. Hopefully they would all understand as Jackie reluctantly did.

"Hello? Hen, where are you guys? Dinner was done over an hour ago!"

"Breathe, breathe. It's fine. However, we do have a dilemma."

"Oh yeah? Does it have something to do with the apartment fire on TV?"

"Is that Henrik on the phone?" Henrik could hear Chase in the background.

"Yes well. . . tis a bit more complicated. Jackie IS here, by the way, and we've decided to stay the night with the patient. He's alone and has suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost his memories. Amnesia"

"Aw that's too bad" Marvin was still confused though, "I get why you would be there but why's Jackie staying, too?"

"Because zhe patient. . . . is someone ve all know"

"Hold on, I'll put you on speaker. Go ahead now. What were you saying?"

Chase joined in, "Yeah you said something that we all know him? Who is it?"

". . . . . Um. . . now don't panic. He really did lose his memory. He's really shaken up and scared. Didn't even know his own name or who I was"

"Henrik" Chase stopped him from stalling, "Who is the patient?"

"Gah" Henrik groaned, "Fine. . .  It's Anti. He was in the fire. His head is badly hurt and he has amnesia."

Silence was on the other end for a few moments.

"Wh- . . . .  um" Marvin was having a hard time with putting it together, "Alright then."

"Hm" Henrik was a bit surprised by the reaction but then Marvin continued.

"And how is Jackie reacting?"

"Let's just say I had to make him promise he wouldn't go inside his room."

"Ah" Marvin hummed, "Thoroughly pissed off, then."

"How badly was he hurt, Hen?" Chase piped up, "You think he started the fire or was someone else after him?"

"I actually hadn't thought about that too much. He's doing better now. Minor burns here and there and his throat and lungs are damaged a bit from the smoke. Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Plus he's scared."

"Doesn't it take a while to heal from something like that? Amnesia, I mean?" Marvin asked, "I mean, I trust that he definitely HAS it knowing you, Henrik. I trust your ability to diagnose it and that he can't lie to you about it. So how are we going to deal with this, I guess is what I'm asking?"

"Well" Henrik tapped his fingers on the top of his desk and bit his lip nervously, "You see, I was thinking about that. . .  I vas hoping we could take him in. Jackie's already agreed with it!" he snuck that in before they could object.

He could hear Chase's groan in the back.

"I guess that's alright" Marvin grumbled, "Still got that room upstairs. I just hope you know what you're doing, Hen. You can't. . .  .change him"

"Marv. . . he's already changed" the doctor scratched the back of his head, "You should have seen him. I think we could-"

"Enough. Just. . . he can stay, I guess. . .  but don't expect us to like it, Hen. We got to look after ourselves, too."

"Right" he was just happy they agreed, "Right. We'll be home in the morning and bring him vith us. We're staying to watch over him. Or else. . . I am. Jackie insists on staying in the lobby just in case. You know how he is"

"I understand his reasoning completely" Chase grunted, "Just be careful"

"Yes, yes. It's fine. He's handcuffed to the bed"

"Man that must have been a shock!" Marvin snapped, "You said he was already scared and then he sees THAT? Dude"

"Don't worry about it. I'll see you in the morning"

"See ya. See ya, Hen!" they called before hanging up.

Henrik sighed, "Alright. That's taken care of . . . "

The doctor wiped his face with his hands and stared at his desk. On one hand, he wanted to go back to check on Anti. On another, he just wished Jackie would overpower him and  imprison Anti. But remembering right now the look in Anti's eyes. . . . .

He took a deep breathe and started to walk back to the room with his hands in his pockets, staring down at the tiled floor.

He started to really wonder about what could have happened in Anti's apartment. Could he have caused an accident himself or did someone attack him? If someone did then they were long gone by the time the firefighters got there. He guessed that the wound was caused by Anti falling on a corner of a table or something similar. It was very plausible but then what caused the fire?

Above all else, he didn't even expect Anti to be the way he was right now. He expected him to still be his snarky self. A bastard with pure intention of messing with him. But there he was shaking in fear.

'The look in his eyes when he realized no one vas there for him. Perhaps I should remove the handcuffs?'

He got to the room to see Jackie still standing by it, "What they say?"

He just nodded his head, "Anti's coming with us in the morning. You can go to the lobby now. I'll stay vith him"

The hero still seemed unsure but nodded anyways, "Fine. Let me know if you need anything, doc. The vending machine take fives?"

He snorted, "Just go down to the cafeteria and put it on my tab. I'll be ordering something, too, here. Goodnight, Jackie"

"Night, man. Be careful"

When he opened the door to Anti's room, the last thing he expected was Anti smiling at him.

"You c-came back!"

'That's almost too weird' Henrik thought to himself as he came in and closed the door behind him, 'Never seen him genuinely smile before'
