Dinner With Mom
"So... How long have you known each other?" Mrs. Agreste asks, trying to fill the silence before the meal is prepared.
"A few months, right?" You ask, glancing at Adrien.
"Yeah, that's about right."
"How did you meet?"
"I was akumatized. He walked me home and things haven't been the same since." You say, grinning as he takes your hand under the table.
"Aww! How long was it until you started dating?"
"It took us a month or so. Not too long, but longer than it should've been." Adrien answers, and you can tell he's thinking about his regrets from trying to distance himself from you after everything with bff/n, so you squeeze his hand before answering next question.
"Adrien tells me you're homeschooled. Any particular reason?"
"I just wasn't happy in regular school, and my parents agreed to let me stop, as long as I could pass my tests."
"And you like that better?"
"Yes, much."
"Well good."
An awkward silence follows, and nobody seems to know how to end it.
"OK, this is silly. You came here so we could get to know each other! No more basic questions! Let's get to the more interesting stuff!" Emilie says, rather suddenly.
"Uh, like what?" Adrien asks.
"Hmm. You seem to joke with each other a lot. Does he drive you crazy with puns?"
"I couldn't date him if I didn't like puns! I don't think he can go an hour without making one."
"That's not true! I'm don't make them in my sleep. So ha!"
"I bet you do. You probably dream about them."
"But I don't say them, so it still counts!"
"Sure it does."
Everyone laughs, and the awkwardness seems to go away, for the most part as more questions are asked and answered.
Nothing too serious, but nothing boring either.
Adrien was right, his mom really is pretty chill.
So that's why you work up the courage to ask something you'd been wondering about for a while.
"Your uh, your husband wasn't too fond of all the jokes and puns, was he?" You ask, already regretting it when the laughter comes to a halt.
"Well no, not as much as Adrien and I, but he didn't hate them. Why do you ask?"
"I just wondered. Like I said, I couldn't imagine being with him if I didn't like puns." You say, nodding to Adrien.
"Oh. I suppose you want to know how someone like me, who enjoys jokes and poking fun, could marry someone who was so serious?"
"Yeah." You say, thinking this was a bad thing to ask.
"Well he wasn't always the way Adrien says he became. He used to be much more, hm, chill?"
"Not chill enough to let me go to school, or have friends." Adrien mutters under his breath, but you still catch it.
"I don't really understand it myself, but it happened and now we have Adrien, so I'm thankful it did."
"Me too." You say, cracking a smile.
Luckily the food is finished then, and is brought to the table.
Everyone thanks the people who brought the food, and you wait a second to eat, in case there's any fancy people rituals that are supposed to come first.
"Am I supposed to use anything specific?" You whisper to Adrien, gesturing to the different utensils around your plate.
"Whichever you want." He responds, flashing a grin.
You had worried you might've upset him by bringing up his father, but he didn't seem bothered.
Everyone enjoys the food so much, hardly any more questions are asked.
"You were right, I think your chef really is a wizard!" You say, eating the last bite of your food.
"Probably. I bet there's also a fairy somewhere." Adrien teases.
"Oh dear, hopefully we still have a laundry fairy!" Emilie says, making you confused.
"A laundry fairy?" You repeat.
"Oh yes! I remember I once stained my favorite top so badly I was sure it was done for. But our magic workers got it out, as you can see!" She says, pointing to where the stain must've been, and there wasn't anything there, but you still don't know why it was brought up.
"Have you both finished?" She asks, not explaining.
You and Adrien say you have, so she nods and quickly starts trying to finish.
"You go with her to get that spill taken care of, while I get started with the chef on our surprise dessert!" She says, looking to Adrien.
The mention of dessert perks you up, but you're still confused to the 'spill' until you glance down and notice you'd gotten something on you.
"Dang it! This is my best shirt!" You mutter as you stand with Adrien.
"Come on, Miss Mess." He teases.
You shoot a glare at him as he leads you to the stairs, but still allow your fingers to become entwined with his.
"So what are we doing?" You can't help asking when he takes you to his room.
"You can wear something of mine while your shirt gets cleaned. They really are miracle workers, because I don't always smell like cheese, right?"
"Hey, you should be disappointed by that!" Plagg says as he zips over from the bed.
"Of course, my bad." Adrien says.
"It is." Plagg mutters, going to his cheese pile.
Adrien gives an exaggerated eye roll and goes to find something for you to wear.
He pulls a few things out, until settling on a hoodie.
"Sadly, you won't be as fancy, but at least you be more comfy!"
"Comfy is better than fancy anyway." You respond, taking the hoodie and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
"You can change in there." He nods to the bathroom, turning to rearrange the clothes he'd taken out.
You quickly go in and get the swap done.
"Did you steal that from Master Fu?" You ask, returning from the bathroom and pointing at the very bright shirt he's pushing aside.
"Nah, I've had this longer than I knew him. I used to wear it to tick my father off when he was extra annoying." He explains.
"That's ameowzing." You pun, which reminds you of something you feel like you should to say.
"Um, I'm sorry for mentioning him, before. But she really does seem cool, like you said, and I just wanted to know how she could ever..."
"Like someone so terrible?" He finishes for you, getting everything put away and turning to you.
"Yeah."
"I've wondered that myself, and never come to any conclusion. But it's okay, you can ask anything you want. Like Mom said, this is to get to know each other. If you want to know more about the whole situation with him, I don't blame you. However, I do want you to know that whatever you learn, doesn't change anything between us. You could find out he tried to make me be like him, because he did. But I'm not." He says, making you concerned that he ever wondered if you thought he was.
"I know that, Kitty. You're much too purrecious." You say, getting a smile out of him.
"Maybe I should just be glad they did. Because now I have you."
"Yep. And I don't think you'll be getting rid of me any time soon." He says, putting his hands on your waist and pulling you close.
"Good." You say, leaning up to kiss him.
"We should go back down, before Mom comes after us." He whispers, pulling away and resting his forehead on yours.
"Yeah, here's my shirt. Take us to the laundry fairies!" You say, picking up the garment from where you'd set it down to hug him.
"You can stay until it's finished, or you can wear that home, I don't mind." He says, gesturing to your shirt.
"I think I'll take this home. You owe me for the times you've taken my hoodies."
"I know why do you think I picked that? Other than I knew you'd look cute."
You slap at him with the floppy sleeves, making him laugh.
"You do!" He says, grabbing your shirt and running off.
Since you know you'll get lost, you don't even try to follow him, but go over to Plagg.
"You two are so sappy."
"Yep. Just for you." You say, poking him.
"Well, if Fu makes me go, you should still be sappy. Maybe more, since I won't be around to get grossed out by it." He says so quietly you almost don't hear him.
But you do, so you gently pick him up and give him as best of a hug as you can.
"I'll make sure you don't go anywhere."
"I hope you can. Kid needs me."
"He does."
"But he needs you to, so don't do anything drastic."
"OK, Plagg. You either."
"Oh, I never do anything drastic! If I can help it, I never do anything at all." He says, squirming out of the hug he'd returned for a moment.
"This doesn't give you permission to be sappy around me though!"
"Are you sure?" You ask.
"Very."
"Very sure of what?" Adrien asks, coming back in.
"Very sure that I'm not supposed to tell you how much I looveee youuu!" You say, winking and dragging out the words with a baby voice.
"Oh, but it's my most favorite thing to hear!" He says, laughing at Plagg's groan.
"Don't you have somewhere to be?!" He asks.
"Right, we better get back!" Adrien says.
You follow him out, but not before giving Plagg a quick nod.
"What took so long?" Emilie asks when you return.
"Sorry Mom, we got sidetracked."
"Mmhmm." She says with a smirk.
"We were talking to Plagg." He clarifies.
"Oh, is that your kwami?" She asks.
"Yeah, he's eating. Like always."
"Ah yes, the never ending appetite of a kwami."
"You've had one?" You can't stop yourself from asking.
"Yes, Dusuu. So sweet." She says, gaining a faraway look.
An idea starts forming in your head, but you don't try to work out all the details now, instead look to what she's placed in front of you.
"Cake and ice cream!" You cheer.
"I hoped you'd like it!" Emilie grins.
"If there's one way to win her over, its sugar." Adrien says.
"Which one of us is he talking about?" She stage whispers to you, trying to find the common ground of sweets.
You shrug, happy to finish off the night with a treat.
After the ice creams are gone, and everyone seems happy with what they've learned about each other, you're brought your shirt, which really is stain free.
"Magic!" You say after thanking the 'laundry fairies'.
"It sure seems that way!" Emilie says.
"My dear, you may stay as long as you wish, but my sister and nephew will be arriving any minute, and I suppose there are some secrets they're not supposed to know?" She asks, glancing between you and Adrien.
So you decide it's safest to go, and thank Emilie for having you over.
"Of course! Anytime! I'm glad you and my son found each other. He likes you a lot." She says, whispering the last part.
"I'm glad. I like him a lot too." You say with a grin.
"This has been more fun than I expected." You say as Adrien walks you out.
He'd already told his mother he'd walk you home, but then hurry back, so he had to transform, though Plagg wanted to stay with his cheese.
"Not worth all the worrying?" He asks.
"Nah."
He chuckles and swings your clasped hands.
"I'm glad you got to meet her."
"Me too. She's really nice."
"Yeah. Which is why she wouldn't ask about your necklace, but I could totally see her wondering about it." He laughs, and you wonder if his real reason for getting it for you was to confuse people.
"I saw it too. I figured it would be embarrassing to explain our nicknames, so I didn't mention it."
"Probably would." He says, coming to a stop.
"Before we get to your house, I want to thank you for coming. I think it made her happy, seeing how happy I am with you. She says it's good to be back, and I'm glad she is, but I can tell she misses how things used to be, even if she is happy." He says, gaining a downcast look.
"Aw, Kitty. I'm glad to have helped, if I did. I'm sure she's super glad to be back with you, even if things are different. And by all means, if hanging out with you will make her happy, then we should definitely do it more."
"Fur sure. But you know what would make me happy?" He asks softly.
"What?" You ask, even though you suspect you know the answer.
"Kissing you." He says, proving you right.
"I'd be happy to oblige." You say, leaning into him.
Though your hands are still entwined, you both use the free ones to pull each other closer.
The kiss is broken for a second, and you're about to go back together when someone from above starts yelling.
"WILL YOU TWO MOVE?! GO HOME OR SOMETHING!"
You both start running off, and snickering.
"Do you know who that was?" You ask.
"Sounded like Marinette." He says, laughing harder.
"I meant to ask about that! How was school?!" You ask, feeling horrible for forgetting.
"Not too bad, she mostly just avoided me and went home for lunch."
"Hopefully it stays that way."
"Agreed."
