The Drunks
Hayden
I watched Ocean closely. Knowing she had bout five shots of straight vodka. I had no idea what to expect from someone like her. Especially not when she was drunk.
I heard giggling. Very distinct giggling. I looked over to see Ocean giggling like crazy.
It was time for karaoke. We took turns choosing and singing songs until Jayden put on the best song ever.
The chorus came and five out of tune voices belted out the lyrics.
Beauty in the water, angel on the beach
Ocean's daughter, I thought love was out of reach.
'Til I got her, had I known it could come true.
I would have wished in '92, for a mermaid just like you.
Whoa, just like you, whoa.
We were all singing and dancing around I kept an eye on Ocean as she sat on the couch. I closed my eyes as the second round of course started, just for a moment when a 6th voice joined in.
Beauty in the water Angel on the beach
I had to stop singing to really process what was going on. The alcohol was not helping my brain as I glanced over at Ocean to see her singing along.
In front of everyone.
Astonished I pros looking around to see if anyone else had noticed. Luckily Nick, Jayden and Nicola were all too drunk to notice. Vira on the other hand was staring directly at Ocean as well.
Ocean's daughter, I thought love was out of reach.

Whoa, just like you, whoa.
Against my better judgment I walked over to Ocean and offered her my hand. To my surprise she took it and let me spin her around. We continued singing along to the well-loved song, Mermaid. Once the song had finished, I released Ocean and she scurried back to where she had been seated before, her glasses slipping down her nose slightly.
Vira came up behind me and whispered softly to me "She can sing?"
I sighed not sure how to answer
"Look it's not my story to tell." I said to her before glancing back at the others.
"Plus, we have other drunks to keep an eye on as well."
Vira nodded slowly before turning back to the others. She had that look in her eye that, I knew she was going to try and figure out more. I just hoped for Ocean's sake she wasn't too harsh.
I watched as the night progressed and the alcohol really started to kick in. Nick lay on the couch barely awake, every so often you'd hear his groggy voice in the background say something. I watched as Vira approached him to see if he was OK. As soon as she approached he sat up as though alert and cried out.
"Careful of the baby.
"What baby" Vira asked softly.
"You know, the baby." Nick stated looking at her.
Vira rolled her eyes at him before walking away.
I surveyed the room taking in all the kinds of drunks we had present. I was always told that there were many different kinds. The emotional drunks, the ones that pass out, the giggly ones, the lovey dovey ones, the reckless drunks and of course the invisible drunks. I know I'm an emotional drunk and Vira, well you can never tell when she's been drinking. As for the others...
Nick lay on the couch passing in and out of consciousness, slightly mumbling the weirdest of words as he did so. He was the kind of person who would just pass out when alcohol hit his system. Quite amusing for parties.
Nick may not be rowdy, but Nicola was. In fact, she was reckless and a little stupid when drunk. She was standing by the stairs when I noticed her. I immediately knew what was going through her head
"Nicola No." I said sternly. She turned to me grinned before sprinting up the stairs. Vira watch, a disappointed look spanning her face, as Nicola climbed up onto the banister to slide down. Now I understood why Vira enjoyed watching us drunk. I glanced back at Ocean who was sitting on the couch giggling at Jayden's antics.
Jayden was very affectionate when he was drunk. He loved giving hugs and sometimes sloppy kisses. He was attempting to get his arms around the passed-out figure of Nick. He cried out as he did so.
"I love you brother, I love you."
Since Ocean had joined us, we now had almost eery kind of drunk in our midst. All but the angry drunk. I'd never seen one before, but I've heard that they're quite aggressive. And terrifying.
Looking over at Vira I motioned to Nicola and Ocean and then upstairs. Vira caught on quick. She immediately started herding Nicola up the stairs
"OK you it's time for bed" she said in her soft teacher mom voice.
I watched her go knowing that at some point she was going to make the best mom. I walked over to where Ocean lay on the couch scooped her up into my arms I glanced over at Jayden who had successfully gotten his arms around a passed-out Nick.
Heading up the stair's Ocean snuggled deeper into my arms sighing softly before whispering something I swear was a mistake.
"You're my favorite."
The words bounced around my head as I gently lay her down on my bed. She immediately curled up into a tight ball letting out a soft sigh as she slowly seemed to fade off into asleep.
Knowing I had alcohol in my system as well I chose to lay down on the couch giving Ocean the entire bed to herself. She deserved it with all the prep that she done for tonight. I'd been out with Nick helping him figure out what was going on. Something I still had no idea about. I knew he would tell me when he was ready, but curiosity itched.
Taking Ocean state into account, I decided it would probably be best to prep some stuff for her for the morning. She would undoubtedly be hungover from the alcohol. Getting up I walked back downstairs to see Nick and Jayden now curled up together on the couch fast asleep. I pulled out my phone and snapped a quick photo before heading into the kitchen to grab a Gatorade. Heading back upstairs I ran into my bathroom and grabbed the bottle of painkillers that I had stashed just in case. I laid them out on the nightstand for Ocean before heading back to the couch trying to let my mind rest. I still couldn't get the thought out of my head. Ocean had sung today. Not spoken, she'd sung. In front of all my friends no less. That was a really big deal.
