Late Night
Hayden
My friends and I decided to go out again today for lunch. Vira said I should bring Ocean but I made a lame excuse so she wouldn't have to come.
My phone buzzed in my pocket as I stood outside by my car.
Checking who texted I saw it was Nicola.
N: mind if I bring an extra?
H: who?
N: his name is Dylan
H: why?
N: I want you guys to meet him
Suspicion filled me. This was possibly the reason Cola had been so happy the past week.
When Jayden find out it would crush him. Yesterday he had texted me to tell me about his crush on Nicola and how Nick was going to kill him.
Poor guy.
H: yeah sure
I texted back without thinking.
N: cya in a bit
I sighed slightly; this was going to be interesting.
Getting into my car, I saw Jayden running up. Late.
"Dude I've been waiting." I said in mock irritation.
"Oops my bad." Jayden looked embarrassed.
I started laughing and he soon joined in.
There was a stone in my throat that I couldn't swallow though. "Jayden, uh..." I paused, suddenly regretting my words.
"What's up?" Jayden glanced at me as we excited the parking lot.
"Nicola is..." I stopped again.
"She's what?"
"Bringingaguywithhertoday," I rushed though my words.
"Hold up." Jayden looked at me. "Nicola is bringing another guy?"
I nodded, nervous all of s sudden for absolutely no reason.
"Ok." Was all he said.
I felt bad but I hit the gas and we made our way to the restaurant.
I was already stressed because pf the party planning that was keeping both me and Ocean up late at night.
Walking in, we saw Nick, Vira, Nicola and another dude already waiting. Dylan, I presumed. Nick was already glaring at him. Nicola and Dylan were holding hands. Beside me Jayden straightens a little.
"Hello," I politely offered my hand.
"Sup dudes." He spoke rather rudely ignoring my hand.
I took a moment to take in his appearance. He wasn't super tall, about 5'9". Had on ripped jeans, scuffed sneakers and a distressed leather jacket I did not like the look of him. At all.
I know I'm acting like nick but to me Nicola is a sister.
Turning I addressed the young man waiting.
"Table for six."
"Right this way."
I sat down, finding myself between Jayden and Dylan. We tried to put a lot of space between nick and Dylan.
We started up idle conversation as we waited to order. Dylan studied the menu.
"What can I get for drinks?"
"Glancing around I ordered knowing my friends. "One water, a coffee, three cokes, and..." I looked at Dylan.
"Another coke." I caught his wink at our waitress. What is this guys deal?
"Ill be right back to take your orders."
Once she had left, I got down to business. "So, you all know about my engagement," I paused, seeing all the nodding heads. "Saturday, we have an engagement party." I said that and instantly chatter erupted.
"That's short notice."
"Why haven't I got an invite?"
"Aww that's so cute."
I cleared my throat to get their attention. "You guys are all invited, and you can bring a date."
"Sweet."
the waitress reappeared, handing out drinks.
I took a sip of my coke before preparing to order.
"I'll take the Chicken Caesar wrap."
The others all ordered, till we got to Dylan. "Ill just take the cheeseburger." He rolled his eyes at our choices. This guy was pissing me off.
Sitting in the living room, me and Ocean we're finalizing the engagement plans. The flowers, napkins, colours and extras had all been chosen. Everything was set for delivery early Saturday morning. Everything's set for tomorrow. We are just finishing up with everything. Both me and Ocean have been up till late this week. Were both exhausted, Ocean more then me as she's been staying up later to finish things for school too. Her father still has her working, I'm lucky I got this week off.
Realizing Ocean didn't have a dress for tomorrow due to her crazy schedule, I called my mom quickly. She was sitting next to me on the couch. My clock alerted me that it was already 11. I would probably decide to retire for tonight after I got Oceans Dress figured out.
"Hey mom, I know its late, but can you take Ocean dress shopping tomorrow morning?"
"Of course, sweetheart." Her tone was tired but peppy. "Now you two should head off the bed, I'll be there around 9."
"Thank you, goodnight." I hung up after hearing her reply. I glanced at Ocean to relay the message. I couldn't see her face as it was hidden by the computer screen, but I could see part of her head, which was resting against the couch.
"Ocean, my mom will be here at nine tomorrow to go dress shopping, ok?" I waited for a nod. Nothing, no response.
"Ocean." My tone was stronger but still gentle. Nothing.
"Ocean?" Leaning over I pushed down the laptop screen.
Oceans mouth was slightly open, eyes were closed. I saw how deep and even her breathing was. A single drop fell from her lips. She had passed out. The circles under her eyes were dark, they stood out against the white of her pale skin.
Should I wake her up?
No.
I stood up, pulling the laptop from her lap. Gently I lifted her up, her body became limp in my arms.
Tiny. She weighed literally nothing; her body was fragile. Holding her bridle style, I let her head rest in against my chest and against my arm slightly.
I trekked up the stairs and into her room. I laid her down gently on the bed, covering her body with the blanket.
she began shifting and I held my breath.
Instead of waking up like I had anticipated, she turned onto her side. Her legs were tucked close to her, like a little ball.
I smiled at how adorable she looked.
Maybe a friendship wouldn't be too bad...
No. Maybe?
I yawned, deciding to retire for the night.
I went back downstairs to clear up a little, turning off the lights I want to my room. After getting changed, I climbed into bed closing my eyes. I expected to see the calm darkness, but was instead welcomed by Oceans face, though her smiled seemed more fake. It matched the one she always wore.
