Father

Ocean

I walked into the office building that was all to familiar. It was Tuesday.
Stepping inside, I got the all to familiar glare, only now with more hatred behind it.
"Your work is up in the office." Our secretary said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness.
I nodded thanks before heading up the stairs. Once I reached the floor my office was on, I stepped inside. I felt the dark room consume me as I closed the door. I slid my hand across the wall trying to find the light switch.
Once the light was on, I strode over to my desk. Placing my bag down, I began the work that was piled high on my desk.
One thing I hate about my job is that I'm the one who gets bogged down in work.
It's been almost three hours and I'm still not finished, not even half finished.
I sorted through the papers, pulling out some that I slid into my bag. I would do those when I got back to Hayden's.
"Ocean." I heard my father's stern voice call from the other side of the door.
Flinging my bag over my shoulder, I opened the door.
Doing my best to not shake, I avoided eye contact.
"Come with me." Luccas said in his all to familiar stern tone.
I followed him down into the lobby and out to his car.
"Get in." His tone got harsher.
I did as I was told, and he sped off toward home.
I knew this was my life now, sadly.
I watched as the fog began lifting from the ground. It gave Luccas's long driveway a haunted feel.
Although I'm not to get scared easily, it creeped me out.
I followed Luccas inside and to his favourite room.
The one room I was well acquainted with.
I hated this so much.
My silence only pushed Luccas more.
He had said once that if I screamed, he would stop.
But he knew. He knew that I would never scream.
The voice in my head was my only comfort today.
Hearing a voice that sounded so familiar whisper to me.
You deserve this.
The pain has only just begun.
This will end everything.
There were times when I wished that the pain would stop, and I would feel light everything would float away.
I couldn't remember much of my childhood, and I wish I knew what love felt like.
It had been forever since I'd felt it.
Since I came here when I was five, I had been kept confined.
I used to have a tutor. She was almost worse than my father. Whenever I got something wrong, she would beat me. She was like my nanny. She watched me from the time my uncle left to when he got back.
Until he started bringing me to the office.
I was the heir of the company, so I needed to understand how it ran.
Luccas's phone rang and he pulled it out.
He waved me away as he answered it.
I found myself following a familiar corridor to my bedroom where I stood for a moment.
This room had been my only escape from Luccas.
This was not were I was supposed to be, the conclusion came to me seconds later.
Hayden was expecting me back at the house.
Stepping out of the familiar space I made my way down the stairs and out of the house.
So, this is my new reality, I thought to myself.
Walking down the long driveway in the dark fog wasn't something I necessarily enjoyed but It gave me some solitude.
Thoughts swarmed my head and curiosity sparked inside me. I couldn't wait to get back and pick up my book. I could run my fingers along their delicate spines, breathing in the smell of old books and sweet worlds that others had come to terms with.
With these thoughts firmly implanted in my head, I felt a little better about the bus ride that was to come.
A cold wind began blowing. It started playing with my hair as I stood at the bus stop. As I waited the fog began to thin, losing its creepy vibe.
When I heard the familiar screech of bus brakes, I let out a breath that I hadn't realized was stuck in my throat.

When the bus finally reached my stop, I stepped off, letting the wind whip my hair once again.
Walking up to the large house that I was supposed to call home, I pulled out my key and unlocked the door.
The house was silent when I stepped inside.
Glancing at the clock on the wall, I saw it was 6:15pm, meaning I had about fifteen minutes before Hayden was going to be home.
He had asked me in the car to have dinner ready for me by the time he got home.
Great timing.
The sarcasm dripped off the words.
I sighed before stepping into the kitchen and grabbing some things from the cabinets. Using what knowledge, I had of cooking, I began to cook something up for Hayden.
I was almost finished when Hayden slammed the door open.
"Where's my food?" He didn't sound like he was in a good mood.
I stood frozen with the spatula in my hand.
Not a sound escaped me. The silence was only broken by the sizzling of the food on the stovetop.
"Hurry up, redhead." The venom that dripped off every word was enough to send shivers up my spine.
I turned back to the stove, finishing up. Loading all the food onto a plate, I slid the plate in front of Hayden who had taken a seat at the bar.
I slipped away, not ready for the repercussions of my actions.
Sitting in my book room, I glanced at all the books that I had moved to the shelves.
I choose one that was old and a children's book really.
Just as I opened it, there was a soft knock on the door.
My pulse sped up and I couldn't move.
"I'm sorry Ocean." I heard him sigh. "I shouldn't have said that. Thank you for making me dinner."
I heard footsteps retreating as I sat confused.
What just happened?
